Birmingham Moms, I’m here to tell you that I’ve eaten out A LOT since I moved to Bama. I’ve hauled my kids to just about every restaurant in town and I’ve had some good times and some bad times. By bad times, I mean that I unknowingly found myself in a definitely adult only restaurant with my toddler and baby. I took a hint when the server politely said “We don’t have any cups with lids, we really don’t ever get kids in here.” At least the South is polite…
So, from my many failures, I know where to go. And I will admit, there are several categories: Eating where the kids will enjoy it, eating where the adults will enjoy it, and eating where BOTH can enjoy it. I can list tons of places in the first two categories, but in the “BOTH” I can only think of a few. One of my favorites is Jim ‘n Nick’s.
Everyone in Birmingham knows all about Jim ‘n Nick’s. It’s great BBQ at a great price, with a fun atmosphere.
Here are my observations:
Freshmade cheese biscuits- Kids and adults are happy for these . They are perfect to keep kids quiet until their food gets to the table, and they are simply delicious.
Drink specials- If you get a night out, the best prices can be found at Jim ‘n Nick’s. Several drinks such as Jack & Cokes are only $3, all the time! Check your local J ‘n N’s for specifics, this varies.
$4 kid meals, no charge for the drink- Good choices on the kids’ menu, and let me tell you… the chicken tenders are DELIGHTFUL.
Chicken tenders- let me reiterate, DELIGHTFUL. I get the tenders at almost every establishment I go to, I am an afficianado. I know tenders, and these are good.
Great menu with a large selection- BBQ, baked potatoes, chicken tenders, even tacos!! There’s something to please everyone.
Taco Tuesdays! $2.49 per taco, $1.49 per Mexican beer. Pork, brisket, chicken, or catfish tacos… Is it Tuesday yet?!?
I can sum up Jim ‘n Nick’s with this: It’s great for meals with kids or for date night. You just can’t go wrong!
It was still a little warm outside when we packed the moving truck and drove to Birmingham late last November. One fate-filled conversation about free babysitting had somehow snowballed into a job
transfer and pair of tenants in our cozy Charleston cottage. It’s been roughly two months since we unloaded all our belongings into my in-law’s garage. And yes, it’s been rough.
I’m not a negative person, but I won’t deny the truth. The weather’s been cold, stark, and rainy. Then there’s the cabin fever, the discomfort of crashing at somebody else’s house for an indefinite amount of time while we look for a new home, the stomach-churning angst associated with never quite measuring up to the mother-in-law’s cooking, cleaning, and caring for…(sigh).
I’m exhausted.
Picture this: Three months ago I was a full-throttle, full-time professional with a blackberry, “lunch meetings” and presentations to the Chairman of the Board. Today I’m a stay at home mum to an 18 month old in a strange and unfamiliar city. I no longer earn an income, meaning I’m no longer independent. For the first time in my adult life I’m…(deep breath)…CO-dependent.
What the hell just happened?
I won’t exhaust the obvious heartaches involved with leaving your beautiful home, career, and strong friend network behind in pursuit of “what’s best for the family”. I won’t beg for pity since I’m willing to bet a few of you have been in my black patent mary janes at some point or another.
I’d like to highlight several components of this move, though, that have me troubled. Perhaps you can relate…
1 – I’ve lost the “power source”, that amazing network of women who stood by me as I grew my career, as I became a wife and, most importantly, as I became a mother. We had book club, wine-n-walk, yoga Mondays…we had, at the end of every day, a sisterhood built of steel. Those types of relationships take time. Time, I’m realizing, is not my own anymore. So when, I ask, will life allow me to find a new group of inspiring and like-minded ladies? How long must I go without this crucial interaction?
2 – I’ve become a subtitle. Once upon a time I was the center of attention, the spotlight, the Pièce de résistance. Now I walk into a room and I’m “his wife” or “his Mum”. My name has so quickly become a subtitle and, well, that’s just a little hard to take.
3 – I’m a recluse. I drive around in silence for hours each week during “naptime” just so I can escape the home that isn’t my own. (It’s a good way to learn my way around the city.) I do my best to stay scarce and keep quiet during the day. (The DH works from home now and the MIL doesn’t work, so I’m always trying to stay out of somebody’s way.) I don’t wash my hair very often. (I’m lucky if I get fifteen minutes per day for personal maintenance. Hats are becoming a wardrobe staple.)
Don’t let me come across as ungrateful. I’m not complaining, really I am not. Truth be told I’ve always had a flair for the dramatic, so maybe this is a cheap shot at making myself feel better. I’ll take what I can get.
Sure, I can regain a great group of friends in this new city. I can patiently adjust to my new identity as wife/mum/chauffer. I’ve always looked good in hats and I have a nice collection to choose from.
I can see glimmers of hope. The funny thing is I’d never have guessed I’d be typing instead of talking. Confused? Stay with me here.
Now that I’m confined to a home (not my own) way down Highway 280, up and over the mountain, I find myself reaching out to the rest of the world via Twitter and the ever-growing blogosphere. Much to my delight, I am not alone. There are many others.
Behold, a new network of women, friends, colleagues, fellow diaper darlings, and co-conspirators! Here I’ve found an online army of “girl power” that’s all connected by still frames (a.k.a The “Avatar”) and minute-by-minute information that’s both personal and anonymous. (Even now I can’t stay focused on writing because my Tweet Deck notifications are causing distraction. Dare I miss out on the conversation?!)
You have a blog. I have a blog. We all have a blog and, as a result, we can all have pseudo-conversations with like-minded mommies through an intricate web of witty commentary. I can watch your kids grow and I can find out what makes you tick. Later on, when we’re released from our homes by the revolution known as preschool, we’ll meet in person. And I’m convinced we’ll carry on as if we’ve always chatted face-to-face, just like picking up with a friend you haven’t seen in ten years. We women are good at that sort of thing.
Let me just sum up. The hardest part about closing one chapter to your life and entering the next is letting go of all the previous chapter holds. In this case, I’m talking about the women in my world, my lifeline, my biggest fans and confidantes. I’m also referring to my once-fabulous identity (R.I.P.), now a supportive subtitle hanging out in the shadows.
At least for the short term, the light at the end of this lonely tunnel is my laptop and my immeasurable love for my husband and son. (Because really, that’s what all this is for.)
So there you have it. I’ve gone from the “social butterfly” to the “social cocoon”. From South Carolina to Alabama, this very hungry caterpillar will rise again. There is life after marriage and childbirth. All is not lost over a new city, a new climate, a new focus.
I’m looking forward to my very own renaissance.
See you on Twitter, girls. And just so you know, I look way more fabulous in person…
When you said “I Do” did you also breathe a sigh of relief that the door to the dating world was finally closing, hopefully locking up tight forever? We’re you happy to say “No More” to the awkward first dates, horrible blind set ups, and the anxious interpretation of the non call, the late call, or debating on whether or not you should make the first move? I think we all did a happy dance when we realized those days were behind us..
Only, they weren’t.
Fast forward to having your first child and having no friends with kids, or being new to an area and knowing no one. It’s like dating all over again. You stake out local libraries and storytimes, hoping to catch the eye of another frazzled Mom or if you’re lucky the polished mom with the clean kids that might actually take you under her wing.. You might actually find yourself stalking a lady through Babies R Us because she has a single and twins that are exactly the same age as your single and twins, you might spend 20 minutes trying to figure out how to introduce yourself to this lady without looking like a total weirdo… you might (not that I would have ever done anything like this myself… really!) but you might. Motherhood and loneliness will make you do some crazy things and that’s why we have decided to set up a time for you to get out of the house and meet some other Birmingham Mommies!

My new thing this week was participating in an organized run. I “ran” in the fun run part of Gabe’s Hope Heart to Sole. I just started the whole running thing, so I took a baby step and stuck to the 1 mile fun run. It was really cold and I’m really whiny, so it’s probably best that I went small. It did make me feel good and I am planning to do a 5K very soon.
Angie –
This week, I took all 3 of the girls to the park by myself. I’m really not a bad Mommy, I’ve taken them to the park before, but this time we went with no strollers, no wagons, no friends. It was just me, the girls and this very large play area. Luckily it wasn’t packed and I was able to manage a good 45 minutes before I thought I was going to have a panic attack. It was nice to prove to myself that I can do this whole parenting of multiples thing.
Jamie –
I tried a new blow dryer this week and it sucked. I want my old turbo-powered, dry your hair in a second, blow dryer back. The husband destroyed it and I replaced it with a pale imitation. This week’s new thing was a fail.

We love conversation hearts, pretty little folded valentines and roses galore. But we thought we’d share a few fresh ideas we found here or there, to spruce up Valentine’s Day this year – and have some fun while we you’re at it!
1. Bear Hugs
Supplies needed:
Red & white M&M’s or red/white candy corn
chocolate teddy grahams
cellophane bags
ribbon
tags or paper scraps to label.
For a really sweet Valentine’s Day treat – mix up some red and white M&M’s or red and white candy corn with chocolate teddy grahams. Fill up a small cellophane bag with about 1/2 cup of the mixture. Tie on some gorgeous red ribbon (or pink!) with an attached tag that reads: Bear Hugs from Jane (insert child’s name). You can also use goldfish crackers instead of teddy grahams and call it “Fish Kisses”.
2. Marshmallow pops
Supplies needed:
Large marshmallows
Chocolate bark or melting chocolate
Popsicle sticks
sprinkles or confetti
small cellophane bags
ribbon
tags from art paper, fun scrapbook paper or even scraps of paper bags
Grab a bag of Popsicle sticks, large marshmallows, chocolate bark and some red, white & pink sprinkles. Put the marshmallow on the Popsicle stick, dip the marshmallow in the melted chocolate, then carefully sprinkle the confetti sprinkles over the chocolate. Then lay the Popsicle down on wax paper to cool and harden. Then using small cellophane bags or a square of wax paper, cover the top of the Popsicle, secure with a beautiful ribbon and attach your Valentine’s wishes on a sweet little tag.
3. Handmade Valentine’s Day Cards
Supplies needed:
plain white prepackaged cards and envelopes – available at craft stores
red or pink acrylic paint
a dish sponge
Before you say you don’t have time – think about how much time this will entertain the kids. Not to mention how proud they’ll be of the final result!
Grab a dish sponge and cut it into a heart shape – use a small cookie cutter as a pattern if needed. (Just dip the cookie cutter in some paint or use a stamp pad and transfer the design to the sponge.
Dampen the sponge and wring it out so that it’s pliable but barely wet. Alongside your child (at least for the first few), dip the sponge into the red, pink or white acrylic paint and then “stamp” the heart shape onto your white card. Have your child write or draw on the inside – no matter what it reads it will say “love”
We just recently learned about a program that we needed to share, it’s too good to keep to ourselves really. It involves wearing your children out so they will hit the sack without a fight come bedtime.. You can send your thank you’s through the comment section, you’re welcome.
One of our sponsors, Birmingham Adventure Bootcamp has announced a program designed to get your children active and to help build a positive attitude towards exercise. Their goal for this 5 week program is to build strength, agility, speed, coordination and flexibility…. and did we mention wearing them out so they will fall into bed without a fight?
Beginning February 8th and running through March 12, this Bootcamp is for children ages 10-14. For more information or to register go here.
