Meanwhile, at the Bowling Alley….

By Country-Fried Mama

Country Fried MamaMy in-laws bought us a Wii for Christmas.  It was a great present. It’s frivolous, and it encourages delusional behavior – both qualities I find desirable in a gift.

One of my favorite features of the Wii is a digital version of paper dolls.  Users can create a player, a “Mii,” in great detail.  A Mii can be bald or have pig-tails, sport a bushy unibrow or a large mole, wear dark sunglasses or a thick beard.

I won’t tell you how much time I have spent creating Mii’s – my little alter-egos – because it might make you a little bit afraid for me.  Let’s just say I have a few from which to choose, but I always send Tami bowling on my behalf.

Tami is everything I am not.  She is tall and tan and cool under pressure.  And she is a fabulous bowler.

Channeling Tami, I have racked up the points in Wii bowling, so when we decided to hit the real-life bowling alley a couple weeks ago, I was looking forward to showing off.

Because Wii, of course, is just like real life.

My mom was in town, so it was the perfect time to go.  With three adults on hand, one of us could chase 18-month-old Belly around the bowling alley to make sure she didn’t lick the pinball machines, and two of us could hang out with 3½ -year-old Miss D. and teach her to bowl.

I don’t know why I thought I was qualified to teach anyone how to bowl.

With the exception of 15 disastrous minutes last summer when I mistakenly thought I could take both girls bowling by myself, I haven’t participated in this sport since long before we moved here from New England.  At home, years ago, we went candlepin bowling.  Candlepin bowling balls fit in the palm of one’s hand and don’t require the player to shove her fingers into tiny holes.

If one has the right technique, the size of the balls should not matter, but it does.  Ahem.  Those little balls make it much easier to knock down the pins, even if you are not a beautiful and skilled Mii named Tami.  That is not to say candlepin bowling is not a serious sport; the pot-bellied men who play it on local TV every Saturday morning in the Boston viewing area certainly look serious about it.

I was a little nervous when I saw the size of the bowling balls people use here, but Miss D. looked confident.  She picked out her ball and headed up to the lane to take her turn.  With the bumpers up, Miss D. really couldn’t go wrong.  She dropped her ball, and it slowly, slooowly, slooooowly made its way down the lane and nudged the pins.  The pins reacted well to this technique.

My husband, my mother and I should have put the bumpers up on our turns, as well, because Wii-skills aside, we were very bad bowlers.  Miss D. crushed us.  Then she gloated.

I’ve been loath to hang out with Tami since my shaming at the bowling alley.  She steered me wrong, she gave me a false sense of confidence, and I fear she did it all on purpose.  Hussy.

I’m moving on.  I have a new Mii – Bertha.  She has a huge wart on her chin; gray, braided hair and thick glasses.  She’s a horrid bowler, but she’s showing some promise on the tennis court.

Yeah, tennis.  I think I could be really good at that.

52 New Things – Week 4

This week it seems like it was all about cooking!

Jamie:

This week, I made macaroni and cheese.  New thing?  Well wait until you read the recipe.  It’s a rich, brie-based macaroni and cheese with gobs of butter and whatnot.

So, was this your mama’s mac and cheese – probably not.  But if so, I’d like to meet your mama. Get the recipe here

Trish:

My new thing this week was making sushi!  Up until a few months ago, I was a sushi-hater.  Then I tried some that was fresh, crisp, and cool in my mouth.  And now I crave it basically all the time.  So I decided to make it myself.  I was very nervous about the rice and the rolling technique.  As it turns out, having a rice cooker takes the pressure (literally!) off of you.  It was perfect!  And layering everything out and rolling it was a blast!  We made a night of it and had so much fun.  Special thanks to “Precious Sweetie,” the fish man at Whole Foods who made sure I had sushi grade fish and prevented us from food poisoning.  😉  We’ll definitely be making sushi often in the future.

Angie:

In my attempt to spice up our weekly Taco Tuesday around here, I tried a new recipe that was a win for the whole family. Riveting, I know. I’ll try to be more creative next week!

Tacos in Pasta Shells:

12 ounces dried jumbo shell pasta
2 6-oz jars salsa
2 1/2 pounds of ground beef
6 ounces of cream cheese
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (6 ounces)
chopped tomato (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Rinse with cold water; drain again.

2. Meanwhile, divide about 1-cup of the salsa between two ungreased 2-quart rectangular baking dishes, spreading evenly. Set aside. In an extra-large skillet, cook ground meat over medium heat until brown. Drain fat. Stir in cream cheese and chili powder, cool slightly.

3. Spoon meat mixture into cooked pasta shells. Arrange filled shells on top of salsa in dishes. Tips with remaining salsa.

4. Bake, covered, for 15 minutes. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes more or until heated through. If desired, sprinkle with tomato. Makes 12 servings.

And don’t be shy, add sour cream, black beans, or any thing you like with your tacos, it’s a great recipe for being creative!

Charmed By Charming Charlie in Birmingham

While getting my hair done the other day, I was expressing the tragedy that is my closet to my stylist, and she recommended I check  out Charming Charlie. She said their jewelry alone was amazing and their clothes were really cute. She was so right.

Since I was kid free, I mosied on up the hill to the Summit Shopping Center and walked into the most colorful, most vibrant accessory and clothing boutique I have been into in a very long time. It’s this fun candy land of beautiful jewelry, scarves and handbags.  Everything is color coordinated and it’s so easy to find the perfect accessory to match the trendy new outfit you will have to buy when you realize their prices are so affordable you can get the outfit and accessories without breaking the bank…

Any store that can combine selection, style and value, gets our vote! So, next time you are out and about, put this store on your to-do list.

It Valentine's! Put the Kids Down and Walk Away

If you are like most married couples, a night out on the town sans kids is a rare but much needed and welcome treat. BirminghamMommy.com has some ideas for you, just in case you can manage a few precious moments of kid free time for Valentine’s day.

Hosted by the Children’s Dance Foundation. “Takes Two to Tango” will help you think outside the box of chocolates… Mesmerize your partner with a close embrace of staccato steps that is the mysterious and passionate Tango. You will enjoy dessert, drinks and a Tango lesson taught by none other than Dancing with the Stars, Fabian Sanchez!! And no ladies, you can’t leave your husband at home for this one… It’s $75 per couple, and proceeds benefit the Children’s Dance foundation. It is limited to 30 couples so make sure you register soon. Saturday February 13th, 7:00p – 9:30p * FINE PRINT: guest artist is subject to change in the event of an unexpected media engagement.

Two left feet? Check out the Valentine’s Special going on at the Alabama Theater. Cuddle up next to your Valentine and listen as the Organist plays love songs just before showing Casablanca. The music will begin at 6:30, followed by a cartoon sing a long and the movie immediately following. February 13, 7:00pm All seats are $7.00 and available at the box office 1 hour before showtime.

If you’re one of those couples fortunate enough to have a spend the night sitter, (we won’t hold it against you) how about a romantic spend the night at the beautiful Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa? Book a room and take advantage of one of he spa’s Valentine’s Specials. A massage, pedicure or body scrub would be a nice relaxing way to spend this holiday. Really, can you think of anything better? We can’t. Packages range from $140 for the “Puppy Love” Massage, up to $425 for the “Forget me Not” which includes a 75 minute couples massage, with 2 Ross Bridge Robes in your color of choice.

Once you’ve been massaged and scrubbed, have dinner at the Resort. Try Brock’s, a Mediterranean restaurant, boasting an array of tapas and an extensive wine list. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Many, local restaurants offer special Valentine’s Day menus. Check Bottega, Satterfields, Shula’s, or Veranda on Highland. The menu’s look incredible, but make sure to get your reservation in early, they are sure to fill up. Should you choose Shula’s think about making a romantic overnight stay at the Winfrey Hotel. A safe way to enjoy some wine and not have to worry about driving.

Unfortunately not everyone will have the chance to get out of the house this Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a romantic night at home.  Give the kids an early dinner (may we suggest something high in Tryptophan?) put them to bed early, then enjoy a nice romantic evening at home. Pick up a special sweet from Crave Chocolatier, order dinner in, or try your hand at cooking together. Get out those neglected massage oils (you know you have them, stop blushing.) and have fun. It’s all about being together with the one you love, no matter where you are.

Have something special you can share? What’s your favorite date night spot? We would love to hear your ideas!

Listen Up Birmingham! Zoe's Menu is Now Even Better!

All right moms, let’s be honest. There are a few things that we love, love, love so much that we’d eat it all the time. One of mine is feta. You can put feta on a shoe and I’ll at least try it.

Zoe’s Kitchen is already a favorite spot of moms in Birmingham for several reasons: it’s clean, has healthy food options, and is kid friendly. We told you back in 2008 how much we love Zoe’s, and now they’ve earned a prime spot on our “Local Resources” page too! But what we’re really loving now is that they evolve!

They’ve spiced their menu up with a few new options. (Not that my beloved chicken roll ups aren’t good enough, they’re just trying to stay fresh. We like fresh.)
Hummus… why haven’t they had hummus all along? It’s such a great fit and it just makes sense that they should have it. Well now, they do. And it is homemade and tastes like it crawled right out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Dip it, dip it now! The Hummus Salad Plate consists of hummus, greek salad, olives, tomato-cucumber salad, served with pita.

The steak roll ups are a heartier cousin of the chicken roll ups. If I had to pick I’d say chicken for lunch and steak for dinner. More filling with swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms, and the yogurt dip was divine. Men will like this new option, since chicken is girly. (According to my meat and potato lovin’ man)

Chocolate chip cookies were so good that I’d do bad things to get them. Enough said. Though I should add that they are even better when popped in the microwave for a few seconds.

Braised white beans were a unique side that you won’t get tired of because no one else in town has it. Think rosemary and white bean… then get a fork because it’s the perfect amount of herb and creaminess.

One other menu change is that the Greek Chicken Dinner for 4 was taken off the menu due to declining demand, but has been replaced with the Rollup Combo Dinner for 4 which is a much more kid-friendly dinner.

The new menu is available now at all the Birmingham (and beyond) locations!

Make sure to check into following Zoe’s on Twitter and Facebook. They’ve even been doing a few promotions for fans and followers only – so… what are you waiting for?

Now – want a chance to win some zoe’s?  Head over to Grasping for Objectivity! Rachel has a great giveaway going for 10 (separate winners) zoe’s meal cards valid for the steak rollups and your choice of side!  Plus, while you’re there, check out her review!

Amanda's Attempt to Entertain Us This Month – Now With Handcuffs!

by Amanda from The Mom Job

I’d hear jingle, jingle clank, clank each time he’d shift his weight while sitting, albeit rather impatiently, in the large, green chair in our living room. Conner didn’t ask too many questions and accepted his sentencing – to wait out 4 hours with military grade handcuffs strapped around one ankle.

Not 30 minutes prior, Conner’s curiosity captured him and his right leg. He trapped himself in the handcuffs an employee gave my husband as prank gift, and came to me for the keys.

“Oh no baby! Daddy has the keys on his key ring and he’s at work till 4, at least!” I answered to his sad little eyes.

He responded with the look he normal gives when he says “Are you being serious, momma?”.

I laughed a bit with Conner to lighten the mood while assuring him that the cuffs were not on tight, and then Michael text me a suggestion – “put the other cuff on the same leg”. (Oh man, the laughter) This way, Conner wouldn’t be annoyed with the cuffs hanging off his leg and on to the floor nor would they wear on his skin.

I grabbed a long pair of pj bottoms, pulled the leg through the first cuff, and gently locked the second. Conner sat so quietly, and laughed only when I told him he was my prisoner for the day.

And so he waited, without so much as a peep.

Four hours later, Michael walked through the front door. Conner sunk slowly to the ground from his green chair and placed one cuffed ankle into the air. He didn’t say a word but his face read “UNLOCK ME NOW!”. Michael slipped the key into each cuff, turned and suddenly, Conner was free.

He hasn’t asked about the handcuffs since his “hard time”, they’ve been put away (NEVER TO BE USED BY ANYONE) and maybe, he has learned that the criminal lifestyle is not for him. After all, no one looks good in stripes and ankle bracelets.

52 New Things – Week 3

Jamie

This week, I jumped feet first into the world of wordpress.org.  I know, I know, could this get any more intriguing.  But for me, it was a) a first and b) very exciting.  I started the weekend off by taking a seminar by Tammy Hart.  The class was fabulous – I only wish I’d stayed for the more in-depth second session.  From there, I grabbed some hosting space from our favorite designer, Shauna, and dove in.  I’m spending countless hours learning as I go, but I’m finding it all terribly fascinating.

Angie

While it’s not quite as glamorous as taking on New York City and seeing Martha Stewart, this week, Trish and I conquered local television in a live interview on Talk of Alabama, on ABC 33/40. We were invited on to talk as “local blog experts” about our trip to see Martha, and about the Juicebox Jukebox.

We weren’t really prepped for the interview, we knew kind of what we were going to be talking about, but other than that, nada. I think we did a pretty good job considering my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest.  It was fun, we had a great time and can’t wait to do it again!

Trish

My new thing this week was running.  Of course I have run before, but I mean running as a means of exercise, rather than running to a sale and clawing a few women to get my purse.  I’m just not a runner.  I like being active but running makes my side cramp, my lungs burn, etc.  In preparation of the Gabe’s Hope run, I bit the bullet and ran a mile after pilates this week.  A mile!!  I haven’t done that since high school when we took some kind of President’s Challenge.  I did it without stopping and now have a plan to build up my endurance and TRY TRY TRY to enjoy running.  It’s so good for you, and it’s free.
