Patience & Your Parenting Style

Parenting style can help you be more patient. In order to be more patient, you can also work on eliminating the things that trigger your frustration. Think about a typical day and make a list of times or situations that typically frustrate you. My list would include not listening/ignoring me, taking forever to get in/out of the car, and whining.

Now you have to look at each situation and try to find a way to avoid it. To avoid having them ignore me, I make them stop and listen- this requires me to stop and focus on them. I try not to say too much, I keep it short and sweet. Then I make them repeat what I said. Once they caught on that they will have to repeat it, they started listening better the next times.

Getting in/out of the car is a killer! They don’t have any urgency, and it’s hard to remember that no urgency is part of being a kid. I’ve made the rule in our car that you can’t talk until you’re buckled. It may sound harsh, but you’d be surprised at how fast they can move! I also think it’s a good lesson to teach them about priorities. Tell me about the fluffy unicorn AFTER you buckle.

Whining is the one that will do us all in. I haven’t yet found a way that works for us, but some suggestions have been: ignore, make a rule that you can’t hear whining, and make it a chore that will receive a sticker for no whining. Any whining tips?

Signs of a Gifted Child

Admit it. At some point, everyone thinks their child is gifted. It’s hard NOT to think your little angel is a future Picasso or Einstein. There are some signs that you should be aware of, because parenting a gifted child can sometimes be more challenging than you would think.

Some signs are:

1. Advanced development– walk or talk early? self-taught readers?
2. Thirst for knowledge– take things apart? bore quickly of new toys they figured out?
3. High activity– super active? needs less sleep?
4. Cautionary– hold back in new situations? test the waters?
5. Sensitivity– criticism is taken personally? empathetic to others?
6. Reality vs Fantasy– distinguish between the 2 early?
7. Insight into social/moral issues– highly developed social conscience? Concerns with matters like war, injustice?
8. Reasoning and Manipulation– understand benefits of lying/cheating? Manipulate adults?
9. Individuality– sometimes seen as odd? learn in different ways?

Find a child psychologist to perform an evaluation, or wait until your public school begins testing. If your child is gifted, here are some suggestions for how you can get more involved in parenting your gifted child.

Educate yourself: Get up to date on studies and keep them on hand so you have something you can suggest to your school.

Talk with your teacher: Don’t just assume or accept that your child is “bored.” Discuss their placement and curriculum with the teacher if you feel that it’s inadequate or not appropriate.

Join forces with other parents: Work together with other parents or the PTO to establish enrichment or mentor programs in the school.

Outside Enrichment: Look into programs around the city such as summer camps. Visit the local museums and see what concerts and plays might be of interest.

Here are some online resources to consider:

Medical Minute: Pregnancy Over 30

Times, they are a-changin’… A lot of women are waiting until after 30 to have kids. On the bright side, you’re more mature and patient. But as always, be in the know of the risks. After 30 pregnancies may be at risk for miscarriage, birth defects, and pregnancy complications such as twins, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and difficult labors. Some studies show that while there may be a greater likelihood of pregnancy complications in women over 30, their babies may not have more problems than babies of younger women. Especially if they’ve received prenatal care.

The biggie that we’ve all heard of is risks for chromosome abnormalities. The risk of chromosomal abnormality increases with maternal age. The chance of having a child affected by Down syndrome increases from about 1 in 1,250 for a woman who conceives at age 25, to about 1 in 100 for a woman who conceives at age 40. It is possible that risks may be higher as many statistics only report live births and do not take into account pregnancies with chromosomal abnormalities that were terminated or ended due to natural pregnancy loss.

In general, after having one child with Down syndrome, the chance of having another baby with Down syndrome is higher. After age 40, the recurrence risk for Down syndrome is based on the age of the mother at delivery. It is important to know that most babies with Down syndrome are born to women under the age of 35. This is because women under the age of 35 have more babies than women over 35. The doctor may refer parents to a genetic specialist or genetic counselor who can explain the results of chromosomal tests in detail, including what the recurrence risks may be in another pregnancy and what tests are available to diagnose chromosome problems before a baby is born.

Prenatal testing is available to help diagnose or rule out chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic birth defects. Testing may include blood tests, ultrasound (using sound waves to look at internal structures), chorionic villus sampling (testing the tissues around the fetus), or amniocentesis (withdrawing a sample of the amniotic fluid).

Some studies have shown a higher chance of miscarriage (early pregnancy loss) in older mothers. When considering all women, about half of first trimester miscarriages occur because of a chromosomal abnormality in the fetus. Because these abnormalities increase with maternal age, miscarriage is also more likely.

If you are pregnant and over the age of 30, talk with your doctor about your individual health and discuss plans for helping you and your developing baby maintain a healthy pregnancy.

How old were you when you had your babies?

No Name-Calling Week

We know that words can hurt, and one full week in January has been set aside to study the effect of name calling and to learn how we can be better friends and teachers.

No Name-Calling Week is an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities. As parents it’s a great time to remember that there are so many things we can do starting at home, to help teach our children to be kind to others. Kids who live with yelling, name-calling, putdowns, harsh criticism, or physical anger from a sibling or parent/caregiver may act that out in other settings.

Here are some things to keep in mind this week and always:

Teach your child to treat others with respect and kindness. Teach your child that it is wrong to ridicule others for their differences such as race, religion, appearance, special needs, gender, or economic status. Try to instill a sense of empathy for those who are different.

Encourage their good behavior. Positive reinforcement can be more powerful than negative discipline. Catch your kids being good — and when they handle situations in ways that are constructive or positive, take notice and praise them for it.

Lead by example. Think carefully about the things you say in front of your children. How do you handle conflict or problems? Do you do it kindly or aggressively? Chances are your children will follow the example you set for them. They’re always listening.

Maintain Open Communication. Encourage your child to talk about school and their friends. Show them that you are truly interested in hearing about their day, that way you can stay in the loop and more easily identify any potential problems as or before they arrive.

What big or small ways do you keep bullying and no name calling present in your family?
