Featured Event: Moundville Native American Festival

“We can learn from the past inhabitants of Alabama about how the environment was used, how people interacted with one another and what can be appreciated about the areas around us. It’s important to learn about Moundville and then remind people that Native Americans are still around. They did not disappear. At the Moundville Native American Festival, we celebrate, not just the past, but the present with our many demonstrators and Native American participants, showing a real connection between the past and the present.”

– Dr. Clay Nelson, Director of Moundville Archaeological Park

Mark your calendar for the 35th annual Moundville Native American Festival! Moundville will be a “City of Life” to celebrate the cultures of Southeastern Native Americans, past and present. Bring your family and friends to meet Native American artisans, see traditional dances, listen to stories and music, and support local and Native American businesses at an ancient city on the Black Warrior River.

Festival hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $10 per person. Children 5 years old and under are free. Nature ABC’s

There’s nothing like the crisp fall weather to make you want to get outside.  Grab the kids and head outdoors to collect your materials for this fun fall project!

Materials:
13 sheets of scrapbookpaper (or construction paper) Glue.
leaves, acorns, pine cones, sticks, pine straw… head outside and collect nature

What to do:
Cut each piece of paper in half and assign a letter to that page.  Then let your kids make a letter out of the nature supplies they collected.  If they understand what they’ll be doing before they start collecting, they’ll be especially aware of how handy curved twigs can be!  Then you can even add in a corresponding word.  An example would be L is for Leaf, then make an “L” out of a leaf.

This is not a one day project- all 26 letters will take a while!  If you want to shorten it, you can choose a special word, such as the child’s name, or “family” or “nature” to spell out.

Hang your completed letters on some twine with clothespins and enjoy!

How Parents Can Identify Possible Poison Exposures.

Children’s of Alabama wants to help parents learn about the dangers that may be lurking in their yard or even in their kitchen cabinets. The Alabama Poison Information Center at Children’s of Alabama recently updated its popular Poison Perils of Alabama app. The app first launched in March of 2020.

“The app talks about different toxic substances, whether it is household products or if it’s a venomous animal, sting, bite or a toxic plant,” said Becky DeVore, an educator with the Alabama Poison Information Center.

DeVore says the Alabama Poison Information Center receives thousands of calls each year from concerned parents about possible poison exposures. This app provides users with a detailed description of animals, plants, and the most common household items the hotline receives calls about. In addition to the description, there are also pictures. If there is an emergency, users can also connect to the Alabama Poison Information Center with the touch of a button. Since its’ release, APIC has been working to make the app more user-friendly and educational. This includes a 10-question quiz that can now be accessed on tablets.

“The goal of this app is to educate parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers about things that we do get calls on every day in the center,” said DeVore.

The Poison Perils App of Alabama is available for free on both Apple and Android devices.
