November is a month full of fun in Birmingham, as we move from Fall into the Christmas holidays, there is no shortage of things to do, and great weather to enjoy! Here are some events not to miss!

Dia De Los Muertos

Bare Hands, Inc.’s Día de los Muertos festival is one of the most intricate Day of the Dead celebrations in the Southeast. From massive art installations, music performances and beautiful costumes, to a procession with puppets, homemade altars (ofrendas) and food trucks, Día de los Muertos Número 21 will be an event you do not want to miss!

Veteran’s Day at American Village

Attend Veterans Day at American Village as they host a special event honoring veterans, activity military + their families. Take part in a Service of Thanksgiving, wreath-laying + family-friendly activities.

Red Mountain Theatre: Play Day Bluey’s Thanksgiving Pageant

Play Days are one-day experiences that are designed to let imaginations run wild! Spend a day exploring the world as a character from one of your favorite stories. Students will learn introductory theatre skills in a fun, creative atmosphere!

Bluey is getting ready to perform a Thanksgiving pageant at his school, and he needs your help! Join us for this fun celebration before the real Turkey Day!

Veteran’s Day Parade

Magic City Mac N Cheese Festival

Small cups of Mac N Cheese for taste testing festival

A day of family fun activities, delicious food and beverages, and some friendly competition among local eateries, food trucks, caterers, and cook teams! Held at Back Forty Beer Company rain or shine! All proceeds go to Community Grief Support to provide free counseling, support groups, and community grief education in the Birmingham area. May the best mac n’ cheese win!

Glow Wild at the Birmingham Zoo

It’s the kick off of the Birmingham Zoo’s larger-than-life illuminated experience, Glow Wild: An Animal Lantern Celebration! This extraordinary event will be held on select nights from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm during the months of November, December, and January. Watch the Zoo come alive with larger-than-life, jaw-dropping wild animal and sea life lantern creations brilliantly lighting up the night! Dia De Los Muertos in Birmingham

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a family-friendly, multi-faceted, immersive arts commemoration of the Mexican tradition of remembrance of lost loved ones. The festival features bands, dancers, an artist market, art activities for children, a parade, food trucks, ofrendas/altars, a memorial roll call and more!  Bare Hands, Inc.’s Día de los Muertos festival is one of the most intricate Day of the Dead celebrations in the Southeast.

Gates open at 4 p.m. and attendees will see performances by Premier de America Mariachi, Emilio Crixell & Border Soul, Danza Azteca Xochipilli, Folkloric Dance San Francisco Xavier, a parade led by a procession band and a Frida Kahlo ceremony.

Tickets are on sale now for $15 in advance. Children 12 years of age and younger are admitted free. Prices will increase to $20 at the gate and online starting Nov. 2.

Tickets are not interchangeable. Tickets purchased in advance are only valid for their respective date. Pets and coolers are not permitted.

3 Events to Do on Halloween Day in Birmingham

The spooky spectacles just keep coming and we’ve got the inside scoop on the most fang-tastic events happening right here in the Magic City.

So, grab your capes, witches’ hats, and trick-or-treat bags as we give you all the deets of these hair-raising Halloween events. Get ready for a spooktacular adventure right here in Birmingham – it’s all treats, no tricks!

Mystics of Mountain Brook Parade

The city’s yearly Mystics of Mountain Brook Halloween parade is set on Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.

The event is inspired by the festive spirit of “Mardi Gras,” showcases parade floats, treats, and a plethora of lively costumes for families to enjoy.

Make sure to stop by the LAH Sotheby’s office in Crestline before the parade and say hi to our Site sponsor Scott Boudreaux, they’ll have pre parade treats!

Trick or Treat at the Summit!

Visit the participating retailers, where they’ll be distributing candies and goodies to children. Each of these stores will be easily identifiable with a window decal and will be marked on the Trick-or-Treating map. And remember to bring along your preferred Trick-or-Treat bags!

Vulcan’s Spooktacular

Join Vulcan Park & Museum on Tuesday, October 31 from 6:00P- 8:00P for Vulcan’s Spooktacular. There will be trick or treating throughout the museum, photo stations, free popcorn, music & MORE! Our leashed furry friends are invited to park grounds, so bring them out in their costumes for a treat.

Tickets are $6 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 12-5, and kids 4 and under are FREE. Admission is free for Vulcan Park & Museum members and includes entrance to the festivities, and the museum.

4: Tannehill Fairyland

The Tannehill Halloween Fairyland, a non-scary fun-filled holiday event. The event features park-sponsored programs during the afternoon and traditional Halloween candy “trick or treat” stops at more than 200 campsites during the evening. Park events include moonwalks, face painting, balloon animals, a bungee jump, along with a train rides for a small additional charge. A special tradition is the festival’s annual Halloween Festival T-shirt. Campground site decorations and lights are extensive, creative and surreal.

5: Artplay Halloween Spooktacular

2023 Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Calling all crafty families! It’s that time of the year again when we turn pumpkins into masterpieces, and we want to see your spooktacular creations! We know you’re not just limited to our Lazy Moms Pumpkin Decorating Ideas, but if you are, no judgement here! Enter those too!

How to Enter: Carve, paint, or melt crayons – whatever your artistic method, we want to see it! Submit a photo of your finest pumpkin creation to us via email at contact@birminghammommy.com or simply message us on Facebook or Insta. Don’t forget to include your name and a valid email where we can reach you if you’re our lucky winner!

Event of the Week: Mean Girls Jr. at Red Mountain Theatre Company

From the movie of the same name by Tina Fey, this amazing Young Artist Production musical version comes to the RMT Mainstage for four performances only. Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. Children’s of Alabama Announces New Animal Assisted Program

Children’s of Alabama is introducing PetsRX to help patients navigate their health journey. PetsRX is an animal-assisted program that includes the hospital’s first medical dog.

Wanda, the medical dog:

Thanks to a sponsorship from Nucor Steel, Wanda is one of Children’s of Alabama’s newest employees. She is a 2-year-old golden retriever. Wanda began her training at only a few days old at Canine Assistants, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and training hospital service dogs. Combined with the expertise of her handlers and Child Life Specialists, Wanda helps patients through goal-directed interventions. She helps patients cope, heal and achieve treatment goals at the hospital.

In addition to our medical dog, PetsRX also consists of three other animal-assisted programs, which include Hand-in-Paw. Hand-in-Paw is a long-time beloved partner of Children’s of Alabama. Teams visit the hospital often and help make the hospital feel more comfortable for patients away from their pets. Children’s also utilizes the P.U.P.S. (Poodles Unleashing Pawsome Smiles) Program at Children’s South. Shelby and Foster are poodles who are trained to work in therapeutic settings.  The CHIPS (Children’s Hospital Intervention and Prevention Services) Center also works with service-trained facility dogs through the Hero Program with the Office of Prosecution Services. The CHIPS Center uses this program to help in the healing journey for suspected victims of child abuse.

Send Halloween cards to patients at Children’s of Alabama

Spending the holidays in the hospital is not easy for anyone, especially children. You can help make Halloween memorable for Children’s of Alabama patients by sending them a card.

Through Oct. 30, you can send free greeting cards to children in the hospital. Visit give.childrensal.org/Halloween and select one of three card designs. Hospital staff will print and distribute the cards to patients on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Protective Life Corporation has sponsored Halloween activities at Children’s for the past nine years. The card drive gives the public a chance to bring smiles to children’s faces during a time when hospital visitation is limited. Children’s cannot accept in-person gift donations, food/candy, stuffed animals, toys that depict violence, religious items, crocheted knit items, and gently used or homemade items on behalf of patients.

Vulcan’s Spooktacular
