Lunchtime Fun: Easy Back-to-School Lunch Ideas!

The school bells are ringing, and it’s time to tackle the lunchtime challenge! As we gear up for another exciting school year, let’s put our creative hats on and whip up some lunchtime magic that will make your little ones excited for lunch!

Build-Your-Own Bento Bonanza
Who says lunches have to be ordinary? Let’s turn lunchtime into a delightful adventure with a Build-Your-Own Bento Bonanza! Grab a bento box or a divided lunch container and fill each compartment with a variety of colorful and tasty options. Slice up some veggies, add cheese cubes, and don’t forget the mini sandwiches or roll-ups.  For a touch of sweetness, include fresh fruit or a fun-sized yogurt. Let your kids become the lunchtime architects and watch their creativity soar!

Dippable Delights!
Ditch the boring and embrace the dippable! Fill those lunchboxes with a vibrant array of fresh-cut veggies, such as carrot sticks, cucumber slices, and colorful bell pepper strips. Add some crunchy pita chips or whole-grain crackers for an extra treat. Pair these crunchy delights with hummus, tzatziki, or homemade ranch dressing for a dippable experience that’ll have your kids asking for more!

Fun with Fruit Kabobs
Let’s turn fruit into a playful snack with Fruit Kabobs! Grab some wooden skewers and thread a colorful assortment of fruit pieces onto them.  Watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, and grapes work wonders, but feel free to experiment with any favorite fruits! You can even add some mini marshmallows for a sweet twist. These delightful kabobs are perfect for little hands and add a burst of flavor and color to lunchtime!

Sweet and Savory Balance
Balance is the name of the game!  Create a balanced lunch by pairing a savory sandwich or wrap with a sweet treat. Opt for whole-grain bread or tortillas to amp up the nutrition, and stuff them with deli meats, cheese, and veggies.  For that sweet finish, include homemade granola bars, a trail mix of nuts and dried fruits, or even a mini cookie surprise!

With these easy and creative back-to-school lunch ideas, you’ll have your little ones eagerly unwrapping their lunchboxes each day!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Sensory Friendly Performance

Red Mountain Theatre believes that theatre is an experience for everyone, and they’re on a mission to create a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons, including those on the autism spectrum, with sensory processing issues, anxiety, or cognitive and physical disabilities.

Say hello to the judgment-free, fun-filled family experience you’ve been waiting for, with Sensory Friendly performances at Red Mountain Theatre! And the best part? Tickets are just $20 each!

Mark your calendars for the final Sensory Friendly performance of this season, taking place on Wednesday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at the Red Mountain Theatre Arts Campus in downtown Birmingham.

At this special performance of the beloved Broadway classic, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” the magic of theatre comes alive in a way that caters to the unique needs of your little ones.

The lights are left on in the audience, and sound levels are lowered for a more comfortable experience.  Patrons are free to talk, make noise, and leave their seats during the show – it’s all part of the fun!  The audience size is limited, and designated quiet areas in the lobby ensure everyone’s comfort. The cast and any special effects are introduced at the beginning of the show to prepare the audience for a magical journey. Our education team is there with glowsticks to discreetly warn of any potentially scary moments before they happen.

So, get ready for an enchanting theatrical adventure that brings joy to all!

For FAQs and further details, visit redmountaintheatre.org/sensoryfriendly/ and let the magic begin!

To secure your tickets, head over to https://www.redmountaintheatre.org/ or call 205-324-2424. If not sold out, tickets will also be available for walk-up purchase at the box office before the performance.

Let’s make this theatre experience one your family will cherish forever! Embrace the magic of Sensory Friendly performances at Red Mountain Theatre and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

Protecting Your Children from Extreme Heat

The Southeast is bracing for heat indices in the triple digits over the next few days. In very hot weather, high humidity, and other conditions, body heat can build to dangerous levels. Conditions like this have led Children’s of Alabama pediatricians to advise parents to pay close attention to their children when it comes to heat-related illnesses. The most common heat-related illnesses are heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“Children are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke than adults,” said Dr. Amy McCollum, a pediatrician at Midtown Pediatrics at Children’s of Alabama. “Children have a body mass to surface area ratio that is smaller. They can’t sweat easily, and they can’t maintain their body temperature as well as adults.”

Watch this video for tips on protecting your child from extreme heat and what to look for!
