Click and Send Valentine’s Day Greetings to Patients at Children’s of Alabama

Show some love to the patients at Children’s of Alabama this Valentine’s Day by sending a free greeting card through the hospital’s website.

Now through Sunday, Feb. 14, visit give.childrensal.org/VDay to select one of the three card designs. The cards will be printed and distributed by hospital staff to patients throughout the hospital on Valentine’s Day.

“When children are in the hospital, a simple gesture like a Valentine’s Day card can really lift their spirits,” said Mindy Wald, manager, events.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, staff is unable to accept in-person gift donations for patients at the hospital.

“Online shopping is a great way to support our patients any time of the year because the gifts can be shipped directly to the hospital,” Wald said. The hospital’s online registry features perfect gifts for boys and girls of all ages. The hospital is unable to accept food/candy, stuffed animals, toys that depict violence, religious items, crocheted/knit items, and gently used or homemade items on behalf of patients.

Better Basics Love for Literacy Valentine Baskets

Are you aware that 74% of third-grade students in Birmingham City Schools are reading below grade level and that two-thirds of the third graders are below grade level in mathematics? The vast majority of our students are struggling with the most fundamental elements of a solid education and every year they are getting further and further behind. The pandemic increases this education gap for low-income students. Unless intervention is made early on, many of these students will eventually give up on education and on themselves. That is why Better Basics exists – to provide opportunities for all students to be empowered to achieve academic success regardless of their circumstances.

Better Basics has adapted to provide virtual research-based literacy programs during the 2020-2021 academic year. These proven programs increase the reading and mathematical functioning of students performing below grade-level. The pandemic brought changes resulting in increased technology, training, supplies, and curriculum expenditures.

All proceeds from Better Basics’ Love for Literacy signature fundraiser support excellent academic intervention and enrichment programs for struggling students in Birmingham area low-income communities. And the need is larger than ever this year! Better Basics provides services to approximately 35 schools and greatly impacts the lives of over 26,000 under-served children, birth through twelfth grade.

Better Basics will forgo its live, in-person gala this year due to the risks related to COVID-19. In lieu of the gala, we are selling Valentine’s Day packages that are perfect gifts for your significant other, your kids, a friend, or even yourself! Riverchase TNT Spring Consignment Tips

It’s the time you’ve been waiting for… The “TNT To-Go 2.0”, the 2nd VIRTUAL consignment sale is coming up!!  Although we all had high hopes that we would be able to do in person shopping for the Spring, the Organizers of this sale feel that this is the safest option for shoppers, consignors, and volunteers.

Here’s what you need to know:

The virtual sale will take place February 22nd- February 26th with item pick-up the following week. If you’re looking to consign there are still a limited number of spots available, you can register here.

Here are some great tips for determining what to sell this consignment season:

Tip 1:

Is the item high quality? All items must be clean, free from stains, odors and not outdated. Check to make sure there are no holes, rips or tears in the fabric of any item. This includes, clothing, outwear, strollers, etc. The best rule is to not sell something you wouldn’t buy yourself.

Tip 2:

Is the item functional? Test all zippers, buttons, snaps, latches, etc. to make sure they’re all secure and work well. If the items requires batteries, make sure the batteries are fresh, and the items is working properly. (items without batteries will not be accepted) All items must be working and functioning as intended. All items will be checked at drop off and any items not working properly or missing parts will not be accepted.

Tip 3:

Is the item neat and clean? Take your items into the sunlight and make sure they’re not dirty, dingy, overly worn out or faded. Look at your items in both natural and indoor light if possible. Some spots won’t show up with just indoor lighting but will become miraculously visible in the sunlight. Ask your friend to give your item a sniff, seriously! You want to make sure there are no strong smells attached to your items. We grow accustomed to smells in our own home that shoppers may not be fond of. Remove scuff marks, dirt, crayon, food stains, etc. A Mr. Clean magic eraser will become your new best friend. it works wonders on the surface of most toys, bikes, baby gear and more! A little effort to freshen up goes a long way!

5 Tips for Moving with Kids

Moving with children, regardless of age, can be a challenge. Leaving an old home for a new home, saying goodbye to friends, and disrupting your children’s regular routine will be a transition for your entire family. Our friends from The Scott Boudreaux Group have a few tips to help spot possible stressors and how to address them.

Time is your friend:

In many cases, you may have months to prepare for your move, but sometimes we don’t have that luxury, especially when the market is moving as fast as ours is right now. If you have the time, use it to your advantage. Prepare your kids for the move by giving them as much information as you can about your new home, let them go to a showing, show them pictures of what their new bedroom will look like, where they’ll go to school, drive through the neighborhood, or show them photos  online of the local playground they’ll visit.

If you’re moving on a short schedule or long distance, use the time at your old home to make a plan with your child about all the steps of the moving process. Knowing what to expect can help ease those jitters and give them a sense of what happens next.

Involve your kids in the process:

Even the littlest task can make a difference in your child’s feelings towards their new home.

Kids can help you run a yard sale, help pick paint colors for repainting the walls of the living room, or even help you narrow down the homes you’re considering. If you have little ones, there are tons of creative ways to repurpose packing material and create moving-day entertainment (think: a moving-box fort).

Let the kids pack a few of their own moving boxes. As an extra tip let them decorate their boxes with stickers and crayons.

Pack a bag for moving day:

Allow your child to have a small bag or backpack for their most favorite items. Their lovey, their game console… a few things that they don’t want to be without or that can keep them busy while all of the boxes are unpacked and sorted.

Visit your new neighborhood:

If you’re not moving cross country, and have the ability, visit your new neighborhood. As mentioned above, driving by places that will be a part of their new routine, their school, parks, ice cream shops etc… will help take the surprise out of the experience and give them a better understanding of where they’ll be loving and all of the exciting new things they’ll be close to.

Keep your routine as much as possible:

Minimizing change is essential. You may be moving to a new house or even a new state, but you can keep things familiar by setting up their bedroom furniture in the same arrangement or maintaining the same morning routines. Moreover, try to preserve any traditions you held in your old home, like family movie nights or Sunday morning pancakes. This will help ease the transition.

You won’t be able to keep everything the same, but the little pieces you preserve in the transition can make a world of difference.

Have you made a move with children recently? What tips do you have that helped make your transition easier?

Where to find King Cakes in Birmingham

Even those who haven’t made their way to New Orleans have likely seen king cakes in their local groceries and bakeries starting in early January.

While we may associate Fat Tuesday and these delicious cakes with beads and booze these days, the cake tradition started with Three Kings Day, a holiday that happens 12 days after Christmas. While there are tons of great Mardi Gras recipes out there, we love king cake the best.

King cake is a ring of sweet pastry that’s covered in lots of icing and purple, yellow, and green sprinkles, and you don’t have to travel to the Big Easy to get one for yourself! Here is where you can find King Cakes right here in Birmingham!

3 Tips To Help Children Become Water Confident

The latest statistics in the Value of Swimming report reveal that one in four kids cannot swim 25 meters by the time they’re completing their primary education, according to BBC. Swimming is not only fun but one of the best ways to prevent drowning. However, the thought of being submerged in water terrifies many children. Fortunately, you can help your kids overcome the fear of water by following simple steps. Here are 3 tips to help children become water confident.
Play Game
Children are more comfortable in a swimming pool if they see their siblings or friends enjoying the lessons. Singing and playing games using floating and sinking toys are excellent tactics to make swimming enjoyable. Sinking toys, such as dive sticks and rings, are perfect for assisting your child to put their head in the water. These toys stand up inside the pool and have easy to grab handles, meaning your child won’t dive in farther beyond their capabilities. Also, use floating toys to help your kid practice arm extension.
Teach Independence
Training young children swimming basics isn’t as difficult as it seems. Start by teaching them how to float on their front and back while supporting their body. With time your child will be comfortable swimming without any support. Nonetheless, never allow your child to swim without supervision. Being inside the water and within arms reach is essential for reducing the risk of drowning. It is also necessary to help your kid understand their limits and respect for water. Encourage your child to grip or pull your T-shirt when they can’t hold their breath while in the water. Once they start swimming without support, train them to turn underwater. That way, they can always swim to the poolside and climb out of the pool to safety if they feel insecure.
Don’t Rush The Process
The key to helping kids build confidence when swimming is rewarding them for the little goals they achieve. For instance, if your child dislikes the idea of having their face inside the water, don’t force them. Instead, let them put their mouth only while they hold their breath. Next, encourage your kid to put their nose and mouth. Hold their hands and practice together to reassure them they’re safe.
Swimming is a crucial life-saving skill young children can learn at an early age to prevent them from drowning when having fun in the pool or ocean. While most children are afraid of water, they can overcome their fear through regular practice. Therefore, make swimming a routine, turn swimming into a fun activity, be water confident yourself, and reward the kids for their small efforts.
