The holidays are just around the corner and it’s time to start pulling out the decorations! Having kids means passing down traditions, and even making some of our own. I want my children to have meaningful memories of their childhood.
Our newest tradition came from I’m a Mom!?!. It’s a book called The Elf on the Shelf. It is a cute book that comes with a little retro inspired elf that hides in various spots around the house. We start reading at bedtime every night just after Thanksgiving. We name the elf and explain that he isn’t a toy to be played with. The book explains to the kids that the elf sits in different spots around the house to help Santa see if they are naughty or nice. So every morning, the kids get up and run downstairs to see where the elf is hiding today. Here’s a description of the tradition.
It made my son so excited last year he was nearly jumping out of bed to go find “Bob” for the day! I think it’s something he will look forward to doing every year, and that he can look back on fondly. And it was nice for me to remind him that Bob was watching…

So, here’s how it works: you write a letter asking Santa if you can adopt an elf for the holiday season, you put out crackers and water to lure your Elf home and hopefully one will come to visit. Then you just feed your elf every night (again – crackers and water – he or she is no gourmand).
But wait! Some elves are very mischevious at night. They’ve been known to have movie nights, have candy cane parties or make snow angels in their snowflakes. Whatever your traditions, this one is sure to be a welcome addition. Check out the story, the elfcapades and much more at www.elf-magic.com
Babies R Us is the place where we go in for a pack of diapers and come out with a cart full of everything from clothes to crib sheets! It is also the place where you can attend free educational seminars. The next one is November 18th at 7pm on Lakeshore and is on the topic of “Mom’s Guide to Nursing.” It is sponsored by Medela, and as a Medela user and fan I can tell you that their products are great!
Now, here’s a little tip. Breastfeeding is hard, especially with your first baby. The classes at the hospitals are expensive. Save your money for diapers and go to the free one!! Medela and Babies R Us are both such respected names that you can count on a quality class. So take advantage of what is being offered, you may even meet a few other mommies to join you for playdates in the future.

We posted this a few weeks ago, but we wanted to repost and let everyone know that the Babies R Us on Lakeshore has tons of bags! We’ve been using them and LOVE them! They are located by the cash registers, get ’em while they’re hot! $1.49 is a steal!
Instead of paying close to $5 for a bag that will most likely get thrown out, try using a reuseable grocery bag. The grocery store kinds aren’t very pretty, but Babies R Us has several great prints that make cute gift bags. They’re only $1.49 each too! You save money and give your friend something they’ll actually use to save the environment. Win Win!!
At our house, The Polar Express is a holiday favorite. We read the book and watch the movie in December to prepare for the holidays. Now we can ride the train too! Wear your pj’s to the train ride and be prepared for a visit from Mr. & Mrs. Claus and the elves, a reading of “Polar Express” while you ride, Christmas carols, and milk & cookies! Each child will also receive a special Christmas gift.

It’s bad enough that we’re over 30 and on facebook (MySpace just feels dirty), but now we at BirminghamMommy are addicted to a Young Adult series called Twilight. You may have heard your 15 year old niece raving about it… and now you’re going to hear us rave about it too!
We have read the entire series (4 600+ page books in less than a week), read the deleted chapters, watched the movie trailers several hundred times, prepurchased the soundtrack, trolled the internet in search of more Twilight, we’re hosting a Twilight book club in November, and are even dressing up as Twilight characters for Halloween.
Have we lost it? Yes. Have our husbands voiced concern? Yes.
But to put it simply, we are in love.
We are each working on a post devoted to the books. But at BirminghamMommy, we are Team Edward, so be warned!
