Make It Work!

So, over here at Birmingham Mommy, we have a small crush on a certain fashion aficionado. Tim “Make it work” Gunn. We hang on his word, wish that he was our shopping partner and would love to make him dinner. That kind of love. So, our eyes almost popped out of our heads (collectively) when we realized he would be mere minutes from our houses this weekend. We’re. Not. Kidding.

No outdoor playtime makes Mommy drink… or ways to keep the kids busy indoors this winter

The weather is cold and there isn’t as much outdoor playtime. This is where most mothers begin to lose it: their patience, their sanity, and possibly small clumps of hair. Time to kick into survival mode and figure out how to occupy crazy toddlers and preschoolers! As always, our friends at the Zoo and McWane have some solutions for us:

McWane Center
has some great classes and labs for little ones, click here for a listing. Our favorite is the Little Labs because it is learning-based on hands on. They run from 9am-12:30 and are for potty trained preschoolers. You can choose different topics that range from the science of sports to fall changes. Here is the description and more info:
Ages: 3 years to kindergarten
Time: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Location: Just Mice Size Wonder Lab
Cost: $25.00 (members), $30.00 (non-members)
In order to attend a Little Lab, child must be potty trained and pre-registered.

The Birmingham Zoo
offers classes for ages 6 months through 5 years. Some of the classes are mommy and me, some are drop-off. Time ranges from 1 hour to 2 hours. Our favorite is Tiger Tales:
This 2 hour long class is for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years old (and are potty trained) who want to stay a little longer at the Zoo. In each class students will explore different animal topics, listen to a story, make a craft, go on a train or carousel ride, and do fun activities. Live animals and Biofacts will be used. Parents may not stay with their children for this class.
Class time: Friday 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Cost: $17.00/student/class for members or $21.00/student/class for non-members

If you’re not ready to drop Junior off, they do have a one hour class where you can stay or leave, it’s called Critter Club:
These fun, 1 hour long classes are for children ages 3, 4, and 5 years old. Each class covers different animal topics and may include crafts, games, stories, songs, and information about the animal. Live animals, Biofacts, and a tour to learn more about the animals may be included. Parents are not required to stay with their children for this class.
Class Times:
Tuesdays 10:00 -11:00 or 1:15 – 2:15 or Wednesday 10:00 -11:00 or Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 am
Cost: $12/student/class for members and $16/student/class for non-members

For the younger set we recommend Zoo Tots:
For children 2 and 3 years old. It is a fun, intermediate class that introduces children to animals and the zoo in a classroom environment. Time will be spent in the classroom and in the Zoo. Live animals and Biofacts will be used. A parent/caregiver must stay with their student.
Class Time: Monday 10:00-10:45 am or
Tuesday 10:00 am-10:45 am or
Tuesday 1:30 pm-2:15 pm or
Wednesday 10:00 am-10:45 am or
Thursday 10:00-10:45 am or
Friday 10:00-10:45 am
Cost: $9/student/class for members and $13/student/class for non-members

For Zoo classes, you register online.

Here’s to keeping your sanity indoors! Maybe we need to meet up and have a glass of wine while they’re in their classes?

DST ends… and winter begins

Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday November 2nd. Don’t forget to let your clocks fall back an hour. We deserve an extra hour of sleep, but sadly our childrens’ internal clocks probably won’t cooperate with that!

No more long days, it is officially wintertime!

UPromise, free money!

If you don’t already have a UPromise account started, get one now! If you’re planning to buy anything at all, it can most likely be credited to your UPromise account. For example, if you plan to buy something from Target or Walmart online, you open the target link through Upromise and 3-5% of your purchase will be placed in your UP account. Simple!

An even easier way to go is to use your grocery card to rack up on the things you already buy. It may be a few pennies here and there, but it adds up. I started mine 2 years ago, and we have close to $1000 saved up in it! Granted, that is with the Upromise credit card. But some of my consistent purchases (Coke, Eggland’s Best Eggs, etc) are part of the plan and I usually make around $1 per $35 purchase.

There are even restaurants in Birmingham that participate: La Paz and Mudtown Cafe being a few. When we eat there and use our Upromise credit card, we get 3-8% cashback. Here’s a list of participating restaurants.

Renting cars, buying plane tickets… another way to save. My husband travels for work and we make his arrangements online after linking through Upromise. This combined with holiday travel plans has made us quite a few dollars!

It’s a great program, everyone should check it out. You can choose to let your savings go into an already established college account or just use the UP one. You can even link Grandparents’ and friends’ grocery cards to your account. There is college money out there, don’t let it pass you by!

Art Festival: Moss Rock Festival

Moss Rock Festival’s slogan “Celebrating nature, open spaces & eco-ideas through art & design” just about sums this one up. We LOVE this festival. There is plenty to see, plenty to do, plenty to hear and great food to enjoy. Trust us when we tell you this is a great family outing.

Where: The Preserve (you can’t park there, you’ll shuttle in)
When: November 1 & 2, 2008
For more information, visit their site at http://www.mossrockfestival.com/

Playing the Grocery Game

We’ve talked before about Aldi & Publix – two of our favorite places to shop in Birmingham. Now, we’re going a little bit more in-depth into the grocery game and we’re taking you along for the ride. As we’re just learning the ropes ourselves, you can watch as we succeed and fumble.

So, what have we learned so far? Spend a little bit of time making a plan. I primarily shop at Publix so I spend most of my time mapping out a game plan just for them. I also shop at Aldi, CVS and Costco on occassion so I work in mini-stops there when I’m in those areas of town.

Anyway, back to Publix. First things first – research. Grab the weekly circular from your paper or view online at Publix.com. Publix sales run Thursday through Wednesday so keep that in mind as you do your shopping. So, now you’ve perused the sale items and are aware of what is on sale and what is on “Buy One / Get One.” Next, go through your manufacturer coupons and figure out what you have. A great place to go from here is www.couponmom.com. Under “grocery deals by state” she lists all of the sale items – along with how much percent off the sale is as well as any relevant coupons that are out there. Another great resources is Fiddledeedee. She also lists the sale items each week with coupon matchups. And if you are really wanting to check things out, head on over to www.afullcup.com – these people know what they’re doing and are always willing to help guide you in the right direction. Plus, they have an amazing database of internet coupons.

Now for the most important step of all (which you already know!) – make your weekly menu and make your grocery list. Don’t forget to include items that you like to indulge in – that way you won’t be tempted by too many impulse buys once you arrive. Now, go shopping and see if your bill is a tad lower – we’re betting it will be.

*don’t forget to check with your Publix about their store specific coupon policy – do they take internet printable coupons? Do they take free item internet printed coupons? Do they take competitor coupons? This is all information you need to know 🙂
