Birmingham Events Calendar: May 15th – May 22nd

The countdown to summer is on! Things at the local libraries are slowing down a bit as the prepare for the kick off of summer reading.. Make sure to check with your your library before heading out to your favorite storytime. The Barons will return home later this week, Hall of Heroes is now open at McWane and if you’ve ever wanted to Dine with some Dinosaurs, this week you can at the Prehistoric Picnic!

Sunday May 15th:

Cookie Craze Days at Full Moon BBQ
Full Moon BBQ will be offering a FREE Half Moon Cookie with any purchase at each of their locations! The award winning cookies are made from scratch daily with fresh, wholesome ingredients such as Southern pecans and decadent chocolate chips. Crisp from the oven, each cookie is hand-dipped in rich, melted milk chocolate. You’ve seen them on Alabama Tourism Department’s list of “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die,” and in Taste of the South’s feature as one of the top five best handmade cookies delivered to your door.

Monday May 16th:

Hall of Heroes –  McWane Science Center
It was a busy weekend celebrating Itty Bitty Magic City, but we wanted to remind you that The Hall of Heroes is now open!

Learn the circumstances that create superheroes, discover the ideals that heroes uphold, and push boundaries as to what it truly means to be heroic in the Hall of Heroes!

Starting your journey in the ‘Identification Station’ guests will learn about, and get sorted into, one of th e five disciplines that are the basis for all super powers: ‘Powers of the Body’, ‘Powers of the Mind,’ ‘Mastery,’ ‘Gadgets,’ and the ‘Elements.’ These five powers are reflected throughout the exhibit where guests can explore, learn and test their skills at the many interactive stations to find out what discipline of Superhero they excel in.

The exhibit features a half scale replica of the 1960’s Barris Kustoms’ Batmobile and various other movie props, replicas and rare artifacts from past and present major motion pictures and television shows. Interactive display cases will take guests through a history of heroes and how people relate to them, from the ‘Radio’ to the ‘Pop Culture’ display that talks about everything from blockbuster films, to large-scale comic conventions.

SAFE Day – Birmingham Zoo
For Endangered Species Day, the Birmingham Zoo is highlighting the growing national importance of working on saving endangered species from extinction. Visitors can experience special keeper chats relating to how they can help with saving animals from extinction (SAFE). The spotlighted animals at the Birmingham Zoo range from vulnerable to critically endangered and are part of a larger, national effort organized by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), of which the Birmingham Zoo is a member. Guests will be able to learn about the threats that the Southern white rhino, Sumatran orangutans, Malayan tiger, Egyptian tortoise, gopher tortoise and cassowary are facing in the wild. These animals are in danger of going extinct and never being seen again. Guests will also have the opportunity to speak with educators at several different animal exhibits.

Prehistoric Picnic – Birmingham Zoo
Enjoy a picnic style dinner at the Zoo on May 20 from 6-8pm with your family, dino style. See fossils, biofacts and play dinosaur trivia for fun prizes before taking a special guided evening tour of the Dinosaur exhibit. It’s fun for the whole family! Pre-registration is required.

Ms Mandy’s Musical Meetup – Homewood Public Library
A marvelous mish-mash of musical magic!  We’ll look, listen, and learn as musicians from amateur to expert share their musical talents with us.

Bob Sykes BBQ and Blues Festival – DeBardeleben Park
A relaxing and fun atmosphere for the entire family. You can expect to hear talented award winning local and national blues musicians. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket and set-up your spot for the day.

There is something to do for the entire family including a large kids corner with activities and games. Children twelve and under are free. All around the festival will be booths offering various types of crafts, free giveaways and legendary Bob Sykes bbq. General admission and VIP Tickets can be purchased at www.bobsykesblues or at Bob Sykes Bar B Q Restaurant. Every year a portion of the festival proceeds goes to a local charity. Expect a fun time for all!

Birmingham International Street Fair – Sojourns
Bringing multicultural flavor into the heart of the business district!  Food, Dance, Music, Vendors with representation from all over the world.  See belly dancers, hear german music, dance a latin scene and food to tantalize your taste buds from many countries.  Traditional style of dress encouraged!  Show your flavor Birmingham! Part of the festivities include a signing of a city pledge to bring the different groups of Birmingham togehter as a community.  
Free admission, though donations encouraged.

Birmingham Zoo:

The Birmingham Zoo offers a variety of daily activities from Giraffe and Pelican Feedings to Bird Tours and Lion Training. For a daily schedule of whats happening at the Zoo, visit their site.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.
