I’m hesitant to review Twisted Root Burger Co. because it’s already so popular, it can be hard to find a table at times but I like you so I’ll share. Don’t want to bury the lead so I’ll tell you my favorite thing about this restaurant first: the back patio has a great play area so your kids will go away for a while and let you talk/eat/breathe/play on your phone. Can you imagine having an actual conversation with your spouse or friend over dinner? Genius! All the while, your kids are fenced in playing a giant Connect Four or Ring Toss game right where you can see them. No whining about when the food will arrive or, 40 seconds after the food has arrived, about when you’re going to be done eating. Huge, huge selling point.
Now, on to the food, which is really good. My favorite burger so far has been the Spicy Goat – chipotle sauce, Glenview Farms Goat Cheese, and bacon. Definitely get a side like the delicious fries or fried pickles (I did not say this was a health food restaurant, although you can find some healthier options). My friend had The Western with pepper jack cheese, bacon, fried onion strings, and jalapenos – also excellent. The best-named burger award goes to the Freshman 15: Smashed fries on top of melted cheddar, fried egg, and bacon (Note: this is NOT one of those healthier items to which I was referring before…). Not feeling the combos on the menu? Build your own burger with toppings like peanut butter, hatch green chilies, fried egg, or bacon (they also have regular things like ketchup). If you’re an adventurous eater, Twisted Root offers several types of unusual meat like buffalo, ostrich, gator, or even kangaroo (I’m going to pass on that last one). Call ahead to see what’s in season before your visit. Even with all that game, they didn’t forget the non-meat-eaters and offer several salads and a vegan black bean, chickpea, and quinoa burger. Gluten-free buns are also available.
The Kids’ Menu is limited to mini corndogs and chicken nuggets but consider getting a regular burger and splitting it for two or even three young kids.
After dinner, the real fun starts: DESSERT. Choose from homemade custard shakes like peanut butter and brownies (which I’m told is amazing) or toasted marshmallow s’mores or Build-Your-Own Floats – they provide the ice cream, you pick the soda. If you’re over 21, you can get an adult milkshake. Yeah – that’s a thing – a very good thing. Banana & Bailey’s, Oreo & Amaretto, or Crème de Menthe & Chocolate. Just make sure you bring a designated driver in case you want seconds!
