April 18th is Hazardous Waste Removal Day in Hoover! Mark your calendars and pack your stuff for drop-off!

Household Hazardous Waste Day provides an opportunity for Hoover residents to properly dispose of the items listed below. Thanks to everyone who participates, you are keeping our environment clean!

The event is held between 8 am and 12 Noon at Regions Park Stadium parking lot. A list of accepted and non-accepted materials is posted here. Please note this event is for Hoover Jefferson and Hoover Shelby County (households) only. Items from businesses and contractors will not be accepted. Proof of residence will be required.

You and I can both think of countless reasons why adding a houseplant or two around the house could help things out a bit, right? Decor, fresh air, general sense of well-being? Check, check and check.

What’s that? You can’t manage to keep the darn things alive? Not to worry grasshoppers! Head over to your favorite nursery (or ours) and talk to the experts. Explain your problem and ask them for their *ahem* “most user friendly” type. They’ll help you with the ins and outs of houseplant care and you’ll be well on your way to a greener home.

Kids and Veggies: The War of 2009

The daily barrage of things just waiting to be purchased so they can take up more space in your house is not what you need. Afterall, you’re a smart, independent woman and if you need something, you know where to find it! So, instead of dealing with the daily catalog assault, try to get off their lists instead (Try, just try, they’ll still find you my pretty!)

Birmingham Mommy Goes Green! Dining Out Edition

So, how can we make an impact (or not make one) when we’re out and about on the town? Hmmm…..well, as much as I’d like to mainly eat at restaurants with cloth napkins, you and I both know that doesn’t happen often enough. So, what’s a girl to do when she’s stuck at Chick-Fil-A again? Try to only take one napkin per person – rather than grabbing a stack as I, oops, some people do.

GASP! I know you moms out there are saying “I can’t do that BirminghamMommy! My kids slather Polynesian sauce from one end of their ~~grubby little~~ arms to the other!” – well you’ll never know until you try, right? Besides, we know you carry and arsenal of baby wipes in your bag for times like these, break them out if you just have to.

Great hidden shopping

If you’re shopping for a gift for a friend or child, make sure to stop by Rocky Ridge Pharmacy and Fun Stuff! located in Vestavia at the corner of Rocky Ridge and Morgan. Both have some great unique gifts at reasonable prices.
Fun Stuff! also has a great line of invitations and monogrammed gifts that are available next day.
Next door to Rocky Ridge pharmacy is Clotheshorse, a great consignment store for designer clothing.
If you’re hungry, head across the street to Leonardo’s Italian, Cafe Iz, or Serendipity Sweets.

This shopping center is anchored by a Western grocery store that offers free wine tastings every Friday night! The turnout is usually great, and they really know their wine!

So stop by and look around… most people don’t know about the great shopping available.

Alabaster

Albert Scott Library

Easter egg hunt – enjoy story and music with Miss Spring in the mobile unit of the Albert Scott library and then hunt for eggs on the grounds. Wed April 8 10:30 for young children. Easter bunny will be there also.

Veteran’s Park

City of Alabaster City Wide Easter Celebration Sat. April 11 at Veterans Park on 119 (in ALABASTER). 9 a.m. start with games, inflatables and an egghunt Website

Gardendale

Moncreif Park

The second-annual night-time Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 4 at Moncrief Park behind the tennis courts. The event is free and there will be food, games and prizes. Bring your flashlight. ** no time listed for this event **

Mt Olive Road

The Great Egg Drop will take place April 4 on Mount Olive Road about 2 miles west of I-65. There will be inflatables and free drinks and snacks while we wait on the helicopter to arrive. The eggs will be stuffed with candy and many of them with certificates for prizes from local merchants. All kids are welcome! But we also celebrate our dear Mother Earth – and what a way to do it than honor our beloved planet with simple changes to make a big difference.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a specially chosen collection of books designed to spark a life-long love of reading. Each participant receives an age-appropriate book each month in the mail until they reach five years of age. Enrolling a child is done at no cost to the parent; it is simply the gift of reading.
