You may have noticed a new (ish) trend on the baby carrier scene. Gone are the days of lugging baby in your arms or pushing that cumbersome stroller (unless you like the cumbersome stroller – and well, sometimes I just do.) Options have unfolded big time over the last few years in the baby carrier arena. Front carriers, wraps and slings..Oh my! (I couldn’t resist)
So, we’re going to give our version of the rundown on a few of these and you can decide if any of them are right for you. First up the front carriers. Popular models like the Baby Bjorn and Snugli are the two that come to mind. I had a Snugli with my first born. It was definitely useful, but I only ended up using it a few times before it found it’s way to the back of the closet. For me, it caused a little back pain as the position of the child in relation to my horrible posture just didn’t work out. A plus of this one is the wipeable/washable fabric and secure clips. You can grab the Snugli at Babies R Us, along with many other carriers.
Next up – wraps. This Birmingham Mommy hasn’t tried one, but oh they look so comfortable. A popular model is the Moby Wrap. Available in a variety of colors and fabric types – this one looks pretty cozy for baby. I’ve seen a few of you Birmingham mommies around town in this thing and I likey!
Finally, slings. I use a hotsling now with my second child. She’s a large 9 month old and I couldn’t be happier. She prefers nothing more than being on my hip and thankfully, the hip carry position allows her to do just that – as long as she’d like. I love its ease of use, easy storage (it’s fabric, it folds) and easy clean-up. The fabric choices alone are enough to make you drool and it also washes well with no pilling. Hotslings makes it easy to become a pro at baby wearing by including an extremely helpful DVD that will teach you about all the different posistions for wearing your baby. It’s very comforatble with no rings or buckles to hassle with. Our only advice is to make sure you get the right size for maximum comfort. I’ve been saving this one for our green month. Couldn’t wait. Couldn’t stand it! I took the plunge and started using cloth diapers for my newest addition.
Almost a year ago, I welcomed a bouncing new itty bitty into the world. I decided beforehand that I wanted to try cloth diapering. I did, however have a few stipulations up my sleeve. First, I planned on only using them at home. Second, if I didn’t like it, it was back to disposables all the way. Third, I planned to use disposables while itty bitty was still really new because frankly, why throw one more wrench into the wash, if you know what I mean.
So, itty bitty came, and about six weeks later, I went for it. I cannot tell you how surprised I was to find out how easy peasy they are to use, how comfortable they look (and I assume are), and how easy it is to clean them up. I went with the Bum Genius 3.0. This diaper features the works in ease of use. To make matters easier, I installed the Bum Genius Diaper Sprayer (found here) to the back of my toilet tank. That thing rocks and makes me wonder what people do about cloth diapers without it!
Anyway, the cons…yes, it’s a tad bit harder to deal with the poop situation. But really, it’s not the big of a deal. What’s left after spraying is minimal. And not much more than is left on an outfit after a diaper failure. And washing can be a drag, but not much of a problem there either. But, I’ve had no leaks. None. Gotta love that, right?
So, this Birmingham Mommy gives cloth diapering (my part-time use of) a big fat thumbs up. If you’re even remotely interested in it, contact the folks over at Cotton Babies (and check out their cool FAQ page here). They were a big help with my initial questions.

If you’re still wagging around paper towels to get your house clean, it’s time to put them down and move on. Our vote – washable rags and microfiber towels. You’ll be amazed what a microfiber towel can clean – all with a little water.

Do you remember the crazy water situation in Birmingham last year? Well we do. How about a little way to contribute that we swear won’t hurt at all. Not at all. Ok, it might hurt a tad, but really, it’s not that bad: turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving your legs. Or both.

Ok, so we’re not asking you to walk the interstates picking up trash on the way to the beach (although if you do that, you’re way way way ahead on the green journey than us and we bow to your greatness.) No, all we’re saying is when you get to your destination, pick up behind yourself (and others if you’re so inclined). Why not, right?
