Alys Stephens Center Presents The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare

Coming up October, 2nd don’t miss Lightwire Theatre’s The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare.

We begin with Aesop’s classic fable of The Tortoise and the Hare but continue the story, which finds them 10 years down the road, now with children of their own and exploring modern-day distractions. Smartphones and video games create a new landscape of lost connections to life experiences.

The Next Gen features Tortoise Junior and Lil’ Hare in a whole new kind of race, where their adventures lead them into unexpected territory. Old Man Tortoise and Big Daddy Hare must come together, despite their differences, to find and save their children and overcome to make it to the finish line.

With dazzling visuals, poignant storytelling, and the creative use of music from classical to pop, this production brings this tale into a new and brilliant light. Lightwire Theater had a very successful, well-attended show in the Jemison Concert Hall with “Dino Light’ in 2019.

Performance is suitable for all ages.

5 Reasons to Visit Majestic Caverns This Fall

Formerly DeSoto Caverns, Majestic Caverns has been serving individuals and groups unforgettable adventures for over 40 years with guided Caverns Tours, live entertainment, many unique attractions.

Less than 40 miles from Birmingham down Highway 280, Majestic Caverns offers over 20 outside attractions that include a maze, gem panning, crystal find, wacky water golf, archery and more. Here are our top 5 reasons you should plan a trip to Majestic Caverns this Fall!

1. It’s a special year.

This year is the International Year of Caves and Karst.  That means there’s never been a better time to visit a cave!  It’s one of the most historical caverns in America that happens to be a perfect day trip from Birmingham!  This year is also the 110th Anniversary of when a fascinating woman named Ida Mathis purchased the cave – a cave her great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter now work year-round making it a destination for families from across the US.

2. It’s the only underground waterfall in Alabama.

An underground waterfall is truly a rare and unique thing in general so a visit to the one at DeSoto Caverns is really just a must.

3. It’s always 60 degrees.

This is not a drill. We know how hot Alabama can get so we’d never joke with you about this. The temperature in the cave stays at 60 degrees year-round making it not only one of the few indoor/outdoor experiences guests can enjoy regardless of the weather but a place to beat the heat as well.

4. It’s the perfect family outing.

Whether it’s the sheer excitement of being in a live cavern or the feeling of wonder while watching the underground laser, water & light show, DeSoto Caverns is a feast for the senses… for everyone in the family!

5. It’s full of history and stories.

George Washington put DeSoto Caverns on record as one of the first caverns recorded in the US and today it’s still one of the most historical caves in America. The history lessons are indeed abundant but the stories….did you know the cave was a honky tonk during prohibition or that a mastodon was found inside the caverns?  And there’s plenty more where that came from.
