Birmingham Events Calendar: May 29th – June 5th

Happy Birthday, Vulcan!! This week our favorite Iron Man turns 112 and we’re all invited to help him celebrate! Lots of Summer Reading Kick Offs happening this week and the Barons return home to take on the Chattanooga Lookouts at Regions Field and Annual Rickwood Classic!

It’s Not Our Fault if Your Kids are Bored!

Sunday May 29th:

Free admission for all active and retired Military – Birmingham Zoo
Spend your Memorial Day weekend at the Birmingham Zoo. Splash in the fountains, take a ride on the train* and carousel*, enjoy Schaeffer Eye Center  Wildlife Shows and experience all the Zoo has to offer. In honor of Memorial Day weekend, the Zoo is giving FREE admission to veterans as well as all active and retired military and their dependents. Bring your proof of military service (military ID card, dependent ID card, driver’s license, etc.) to take part in all the fun the Zoo has to offer.

MEMORIAL DAY!

Bluestar Museums offers Free Admission – McWane Science Center
Blue Star Museums offers FREE admission to active duty military, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard and Reserve members, with up to five family members. This offer does not include IMAX movies or parking. Offer valid through Labor Day, September 5, 2016.

21st Annual Rickwood Classic – Rickwood Field
The Birmingham Barons and The Friends of Rickwood will welcome baseball fans back to legendary Rickwood Field for the 21st Annual Rickwood Classic. The classic will honor ‘Baseball Hall of Famers’. The game will showcase the Birmingham Barons against the defending Southern League Champion Chattanooga Lookouts, Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Former MLB All-Star, Cy Young Award winner, Baseball Hall of Famer and former Birmingham A’s pitcher Rollie Fingers will be the special guest of honor and will be available for autographs during the game.
All tickets are general admission for $10. Groups tickets available.

Ready, Set, Read, Summer Reading Kickoff – Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest
Join us for a Beatin’ Path Rhythm performance followed by free Kona Ice. Special bags will be given to all who sign up for Summer Reading on this day, plus it will be the grand opening of our Small Fry Training Gym! Everyone first grade and under who signs up for Summer Reading will receive a free membership to our SFTG, and this will be the first chance to check it out! We will also host an evening performance by Global Movement, a Cirque Du Soleil alum, who will perform a gymnastics program on the silks in our outdoor amphitheater at 6:30 p.m. and we’ll have hot dogs and drinks for everyone to enjoy. Don’t miss out on these fun events to celebrate the start of Ready! Set! Read!

Show Dad who’s #1! Join our hands-on workshop and build a trophy-shaped cell phone holder. Once the project is built, your child can paint it and decorate with stickers that show dad he’s #1.

All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.

Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
