Birmingham Events Calendar: March 6th – March 13th

We hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful sunshine! This week Railroad Park is opening up it’s beautiful space for it’s first ever camp out.. Word on the street is that it’s sold out but there was a waiting list, worth checking into if you’re up for a night under the starts! St Patrick’s Day Parade is on Saturday and always great fun for the family! Public libraries, as always are offering lots of fun storytimes.. Whatever you decide to do, make it great!!

It’s Not Our Fault if Your Kids are Bored!

Sunday March 6th:

Cottontails Arts and Crafts Show – BJCC Exhibition Halls
Are you looking for a one-of-a kind party dress for your little princess? Do you need a personalized Easter basket stuffed with candy, toys, and games? Or, are you shopping to update your home décor or garden accessories? Spring shopping is fun and simple, when new exhibitors join your favorite vendors from Christmas Village to display fresh new ideas and crafts all in the comfort of the Birmingham/Jefferson Convention Complex.  New!!! VIP Tickets for Christmas Village Festival 2016 will be available to purchase at the show office for 3 days only!  There will be a limit of 2 tickets per adult  This is our way of saying thank you for supporting our Cottontail’s show!

Harlem Globetrotters – Pete Hanna Center
The iconic Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham with their most epic tour in history, as the world famous team celebrates its 90th anniversary world tour. A star-studded roster will have fans on the edge of their seats to witness the ball handling wizardry, basketball artistry and one-of-a-kind family entertainment that thrills fans of all ages. Join Globetrotter stars after the game where they will stay for an autograph, photograph and high five session for fans (subject to availability).

We’ll provide the stations, and you provide the imagination for a fun morning of play with your child.  For ages three and under.  daycare groups must call (205)332-6619 in advance to schedule time.

Tot Time with Ms Eve, Magic of Three’s – Avondale Regional Library
Get ready to huff and puff with one of Mrs. Eve’s favorite fairy tales.Tot Time is geared for 2- to 4-year-olds with an individual caregiver; no groups please. 24-hour advance registration required.

Toddler Tales – North Shelby Library
Stories, songs, fingerplays and crafts make up a lively 30 minute program designed especially for short attention spans. Registration will begin one week prior to each storytime. Ages 19-36 months. Registration Required.

Saturday March 12th:

St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Five Points South
Kick-off St. Patrick’s Day early in Five Points South with The 32nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade presented by REV Birmingham and Five Points South, led by the Ian Sturrock Memorial Pipe Band.

Come early or stay after the parade on Saturday to grab some lunch, dinner or a drink from any of the participating merchants who will be offering Irish food and drink specials ALL day from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.

While getting into the Irish spirit, grab a great spot to watch the parade with the family or visit one of our many indoor music venues.
Parade kicks off at 1:30pm

Wild Things Kidz Kitchen – Hoover Public Library
The children’s book classic never tasted so delicious.  Whip up some tasty teats with Max, the wildest of them all.  All ages

Museum Day Live! – Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Holi Festival – Birmingham Museum of Art
Presented by the Indian Cultural Society

The Museum and ICS are thrilled to host Holi, the Indian celebration of color for the sixth year in a row! Last year, over 2,000 people came out to enjoy classical Indian and Bollywood style dancing and music, food, storytelling, art-making, and gallery exploration.

The Museum has one of the largest collections of Asian art in the Southeast, so there is plenty to see! The day ends with a huge celebration outside to play Holi, which involves the throwing of powdered colors, a traditional part of Holi celebrations.  Make sure to wear something you don’t mind having to wash! There is truly something for everyone.

Too Many Carrots Storytime – Barnes and Noble Summit
When Rabbit collects too many carrots, which leave him unable to sleep in his cozy burrow, other animals offer to share their homes. Will Rabbit make his way back? Join us to find out at a special Storytime featuring Too Many Carrots. Activities and coloring to follow.

Family Camp Out Night – Railroad Park
For the very first time, Railroad Park is inviting families to camp out on Birmingham’s front lawn. At Family Camp-out Night, presented by Publix, families will pitch their tents inside the park and enjoy astronomy lessons, nocturnal animal demonstrations, and camping demos. Tickets available now.  Dinner and breakfast for Family Camp-out participants will be provided by Publix.

Zookeepers from the Birmingham Zoo will teach the feeding habits and nocturnal ways of owls. Experts from the Birmingham Astronomical Society and Christenberry Planetarium at Samford University will lead campers through the constellations in the Southern sky. Idlewild Adventure Company will demonstrate tips for camping in the city or in the open country. The Boy Scouts of America will lead a session on camping safety and general how-to’s.

No camping experience would be complete without s’mores! Although campfires are not allowed in Railroad Park, there will be a s’mores bar, with plenty of milk chocolate, graham crackers and melted marshmallows for the classic camping treat. Just before lights out, Reach Out and Read Alabama will lead campers in a read-along. Sunday morning the Birmingham Audubon Society will lead an interactive birdwatching walk before everyone enjoys breakfast and packs up to head home.

Families must purchase tickets in advance for Railroad Park’s Family Camp-out Night. Visit RailroadPark.org for more information including pricing, the registration form and a recommended packing list. Families must bring their own tents. Because of the activities and nature of this event, Family Camp-out Night is only open to families with children. Railroad Park expects to host similar events for other groups in the future.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
