5 Things To Know: Tomb of the Risen Dead at Desoto Caverns

Thinking about taking your kids to the Tomb of the Risen Dead at Desoto Caverns but not sure what to expect when you get there? Abby checked it out and is reporting back with 5 things you need to know before you go!

1. It’s not scary!

Despite the scary name, DeSoto has created a very family friendly experience. There is nothing too scary for even the smallest children. While children under 12 are welcome to wear costumes, adults are prohibited from wearing costumes. None of the characters for the show are “scary.” And as always with DeSoto Caverns Park, it is a smoking and alcohol free park.

2. Wear comfortable shoes.

There is a lot of walking around the park involved in collecting the clues and emblems you need to complete the tasks, so you’ll need comfortable shoes. Also for the show in the cave, you must be wearing closed toed shoes. No flip-flops or heels are allowed in the cave.

3. Show up at least 20 minuets early for the Illuminations of Harvest show.

It is the main show in the cave. It takes a few minutes to walk everyone down in to the cave and have them seated. The doors to the cave are closed 15 minutes before the show begins to avoid interruptions. There are only two showings of this nightly, you don’t want to miss it! Also, pay attention to the showtimes for the other attractions, its less distracting for the actors and performers when everyone shows up on time.

4. Pay attention to your map.

The experience is immersive and there are tasks and clues for you to help complete the quest that they have planned for you. You’ll want to check your map you are given when you enter the park for instructions on how to go in the correct sequence to each attraction. You’ll also be welcome to interact with the performers and ask questions along the journey!

5. Don’t forget to visit the Cave Cafe.

The cafe will be open during the events so don’t forget to stop by for a pumpkin spice latte or some fudge! There will also be other food options like hot cocoa or s’mores packages to roast over the fire by the outside movie.

DeSoto Caverns Park has done such a wonderful job making a spooky interactive experience, that you definitely don’t want to miss it!

Tomb of the Risen Dead is happening every Friday and Saturday night in October 6:30pm – 10:30pm and you can purchase tickets here.

Mason Jar-O-Lantern

We love Halloween decorations and we love a cute DIY project.. Here’s one that’s super easy and inexpensive to add to your seasonal decor’

Because we craft a fair amount in this house, we had the acrylic paints and brushes on hand, we hit the thrift stores for some different size mason jars (.49 cents each!) mayonnaise jars also work, then we picked up some flameless candles to drop inside of each jar.

To create your own “Mason Jar O’ Lantern” paint your jars with your choice of color, we went with orange, (the traditional take on a jack o’ lantern.) Use black paint or a permanent marker to create your face. Make sure not to make the paint too thick. You’ll want it to cover the jar but not block out the glow of the light inside.

These make a great display for a window sill or mantle – My girls had a blast painting, littles might need some help with the faces but overall it’s a very easy craft to do with the kids of all ages!

Scott’s Orchard Offers U-pick Apples in Alabama

Little girl looking at a bin full of apples at the apple orchardWe talk a lot about pumpkins this time of year, but did you know it’s Apple season, too? If you’re looking to make the absolute most of all things fall, take a little road trip north and pick some apples!

Scott’s Orchard is a family owned and operated orchard in Southern Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama that grows apples and peaches and makes the best cider around.

They offer Operation Tours, and u-pick apple orchards.

Start with a narrated wagon ride across their 1,200 acre farm. Then continue with a guided tour of the packing operations. You’ll get to see the process of how they pick, wash, sort and package apples and make apple cider! They will leave you to your own after an apple tasting of the current varieties of apples they are picking. Wrap up your time by picking apples on your own!

You are welcome to stay with all day on the farm well beyond your reserved time slot.

Operation Tours are $12.00 and need to be booked in advanced. Only school age children and up will need to pay. Any child not paying, may be required to sit in the lap of a paying adult during the wagon ride. *Time is for the wagon ride and tour only. Price of apples is NOT included.

U-Pick Apples from $7.50 and open every day of the week until October 19th.
