Event: Artwalk 2008

Friday, September 5, 5:00pm-9:00pm:
Saturday, September 6, noon – 6:oopm

Artwalk is an arts festival that transforms Birmingham’s loft neighborhood into an arts district, featuring the work of more than 100 visual artists, live musicians, street performers, food and drink vendors, and children’s activities. The event is free to the public and in the last three years has become a much anticipated fall event drawing visitors from all over to downtown Birmingham. For the past two years, more than 10,000 people walked the streets of downtown during the two-day event.

Through the good will of area businesses and the work of a dedicated staff of volunteers, Artwalk hosts established and emerging regional artists in the unique and architecturally rich setting of downtown Birmingham. Art lovers will see original work in all mediums priced from the affordable to the extravagant. Participating artists are predominantly from Birmingham and surrounding communities, showcasing the wealth of regional talent. People of all ages can enjoy being downtown at a safe, family-friendly, community event. Friday night has been compared to a huge gallery opening with a street festival atmosphere, while Saturday afternoon caters more to the family crowd with special children’s activities.

School's In! Let the Lunchbox Quest Begin!

So, it’s time once again for lunchbox packing to resume. With summer over, we don’t have the option of throwing leftovers, a waffle or any other random food that can masquerade as lunch on the table and call it quits. No, we have to step it up and we have to pack LUNCH! And, while prepackaged food is fine and all, we pack fresh and we pack right. I for one have decided that my child’s diet has a direct impact on her attention and behavior so I’m going for the gold in her little lunchbox this year!

So, in order to help you out in this department, we’re preparing a packing guide full of ideas to to take the guesswork out of what needs to go in!

As with any endeavor, plan and prepare. Pack meals the night before so you can grab-n-go! Also, have all of your supplies ready. Nothing starts the day off wrong like being late because you have to stop at the grocery store on the way.

First off, the container. For the younger set, a divided plastic container works best. We’ve found many options out there so just look around. There’s the bento type like this one . This type of box (shown here from the Container Store) can be found anywhere from Tupperware parties, to retail stores to grocery stores. The benefit of such a container is that you can see what your child is eating and what she is not.

Don’t forget to pack these inside of her groovy new lunchbox as we all know that’s part of heading school!

Moving on, what to put inside the box? We take a “If you pack it (or put it on the table) they will eat it” approach to food. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot and say “Oh, he won’t eat that” – give them a chance. Fresh fruit and veggies are a great place to start for lunches.

Take your little one to the grocery store and let him pick out two fruits and a veggie or two that he’d like to eat. When you get home, go ahead and wash everything up (and slice it if it will last) and you’re already way ahead of the game. For example, if you’ve purchased baby carrots, grapes, apples and strawberries, go ahead and julienne the carrots, slice the strawberries and cut the apples (if you’ll be eating them within a day – just don’t forget to toss in some lemon juice to avoid browning).

Entree’ Time! You’ll need to know about classroom allergies – as Peanut Butter may not be allowed – but it’s a staple for us. Also, look around as there are many different nut butter options – we love Almond and Sun butter. Another favorite at our house is the mini-sandwich. A pack of dinner rolls (whole wheat) or a slice of bread quartered is the perfect place to begin. Now, include your favorite meat or cheese and you’re off!

Now, just one more thing. I always stick in a treat. It can be healthy or not-so-healthy – just as long as it’s good. We love yogurt-covered raisins, blueberry chips or banana chips.

As a favor to her teacher (and sometimes a requirement) we avoid pouched drinks, applesauce bowls or pudding cups. Those things are just fine for the older kids who can handle the mess, but we’re not there yet!

Event: Butterbean Festival

Butterbeans, Butterbeans, good for your heart. Butterbeans, Butterbeans…… I will spare you the remainder of that saying. Seriously, if you are planning to be in town for the Labor day weekend, you can check out this local festival.

The Alabama Butterbean Festival was born as an effort to unite the senior citizen population of Palmerdale with the present and younger generations throughout the area. It also aides as an effort for funding the renovations. The theme for the festival came from the original roots of the community, a laid back, friendly butterbean eating neighborhood. Many memories spawn from the thought of eating butterbeans and cornbread while visiting with neighbors on the front porch.

Product Review: Smashies

With the school year starting in just another week or so, some of us here at BirminghamMommy have been stressing out over what to put in our lunch boxes that meet all of the specified requirements. It needs to be healthy and easy to eat, shouldn’t require refrigeration or heating, and the list goes on. Here is our solution: Smashies! Organic goodness on the go.

Smashies is a line of great tasting organic fruit sauces with no added sugar. It’s USDA Organic, kosher, vegetarian, and gluten free. Seriously, it’s about as healthy as it gets. The resealable & eco-friendly, squeezy pouch is sure to be a hit with even the most finicky eaters. Think Capri Sun pouch filled with yummy applesauce.

While they haven’t hit the stores yet, BirminghamMommy was able to get a sneak peek (and taste) of this new innovative snack. My almost three year old… LOVED. IT. The only draw back I could find, was a trigger happy toddler that took a few squirts to the shirt before getting the hang of holding the packet.

The good news is you don’t have to wait until October, you can try some now by visiting, Smashies.com You pay the shipping and handling, and get the Smashies free. So get to ordering, you know you want your child to be a trend setter.
