ABC time! Learn, eat, bathe.

Around my house, we’ve been learning our ABC’s. Here are a few of our favorite tools:

1. Our favorite book is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault . It’s colorful and clever; you go through the alphabet twice and the rhythm of the book makes for easy memory.

2. ABC Tater Tots!! Can you believe the brilliant minds at Ore-Ida figured out a way to smash the deliciousness of a tot into a letter shape!?!? I almost peed my pants in the freezer section of Publix when I saw them! My kid would eat a shoe if it was dipped in ketchup… so this is a definite favorite for our family. Learning makes me happy, dipping makes him happy!

3. Sesame Street’s letter of the day. Nuff said.

4. Bathtub foam letters: cheap and easy! The first word we need to learn to spell is M-O-M. It is the most important word in the English language you know. And a bonus… if you have younger babies they love to chew on the letters.

Birthday parties seem to be happening every weekend now, and we have a great way to give that gift to your friends!
Instead of paying close to $5 for a bag that will most likely get thrown out, try using a reuseable grocery bag. The grocery store kinds aren’t very pretty, but Toys R Us has several great prints that make cute gift bags. They’re only $1.49 each too! You save money and give your friend something they’ll actually use to save the environment. Win Win!!

Art Festival: Bluff Park Art Show

Get yourself together and get ready to head on out to the 45th Annual Bluff Park Art Show. This juried art show will feature over 130 artists from 12 states. This year’s show will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 9 am – 5 pm (rain date is October 5th). As always, free admission, free parking and free shuttle to and from the event. We always hit the parking at the Piggly Wiggly or Dollar General parking lot but there are other options as well.

Homestead Hollow

We lurve fall. Oh yes, we lurve fall. One of the many reasons we love fall…arts and crafts festivals. And we’ll be bringing you information by the bookoos on all the happening festivals in the area. (And on a related note, is “boocoos” a word and is that how you spell it?)

A festival staple here in the Birmingham area is Homestead Hollow. Located in Springville, this festival is a good time waiting to happen. With food, live entertainment, pioneer demonstrations, children’s activities, and hand-made items – you will find more than enough to keep you satisfied. Also, the general store has jams, jellies, homeade fried pies & old-fashioned drinks. Ok, the calorie train is leaving the station, who’s on board?

Painted By U, Free Tile!!

Painted By U will give your baby a free tile up until their 1st birthday, no purchase necessary! It really is no strings attached. I picked mine up today and love them! They even do the cute lettering for you, free!

Once you get into the store, you may be lured into buying more! You choose an item(they have over 300 to choose from), paint it, and pick it up later. It’s a fun activity and the staff is extremely helpful. I let my oldest child make a handprint tile that was around $10 total, art fee and tile included. They do parties of any type and allow walk-ins as well. It’s a great idea for a girls’ night out or birthday party for older kids.

Make sure you take the coupon in with you, and have fun! The new location is ideal- across from the Galleria, next to Toys R Us on 31. If you want to grab dinner and head over to paint, it would be perfect! My next project is a birthday plate for my daughter!

Scarecrows in the Garden

The Aldridge Gardens annual “Scarecrows in the Garden” exhibit will open September 29, 2008 and run until October 31, 2008. This is always a hit for us Mommies and the kiddos love the scarecrows (ok, so we do too!)

With more than 30 scarecrows created by local business, individuals, organizations and schools, you’re sure to get an eyeful as you stroll leisurely through the garden.

Also, don’t forget to vote for “Most Unique”, “Funniest”, “Best School Related” and “People’s Choice.” Admission is free.

Would you microchip your child?

Let’s face it, there are some scary people in the world. One of the hardest struggles of my life is letting go of my children and letting them go into a scary world. I am terrified of what or who may try to hurt them. The thought of one or both of them being lost or kidnapped makes my stomach turn. The feeling of helplessness… I’m just not sure I could bear it.

Which leads me to this question,

Would you microchip your child?

It sounds crazy, but we microchip our cars and even our pets… things we don’t want stolen or lost. Is it so crazy to microchip our children? When they hit a certain age, the microchip could easily be taken out. I don’t think the appropriate reason would be to spy, but rather for emergency use only.

We’d love to know, what do you think about child-microchipping?
