Summer Camp Spotlight: Itty Bitty Bakers

Itty Bitty Bakers summer baking camps deliver an immersive culinary adventure for the budding chefs within our community, empowering them to grow in their knowledge of the culinary arts while boosting their self-confidence in the kitchen.

This year, Itty Bitty Bakers has over thirty fun, theme-based summer baking camps to choose from across the greater Birmingham area. A typical camp size is 6-10 students and prices vary depending on length of the camp and recipes made, ranging from $160-$240. Camps are taught at home kitchens and are nut free unless otherwise noted.

Baking camps are organized by age groups in order to ensure lessons and instructions are developmentally age-appropriate. Each camp day begins with an ice-breaker or game, followed by ingredient assignments and recipe preparation. Last summer, one mom wrote, “I couldn’t believe how hands-on everything was when my daughter told me all that she got to do.”

All camps feature a different baking experience each day, with additional crafts, snacks, and games while food bakes and cools. Kids will taste a portion of their baked goods at camp and take some home each day as well.

Partners in Kids Health: Springtime Allergies

Springtime brings warmer temperatures and flowers in bloom, but also brings dreaded allergy symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing.

Dr. Amy CaJacob is an allergist at Children’s of Alabama. She says spring allergies are due to tree pollen. Tree pollen is carried by the wind, so the allergens are in the air we breathe. In the South especially, tree pollen is evidenced by a blanket of yellow dust covering everything outside.

CaJacob says spring allergies usually begin around Valentine’s Day. She advises parents whose children suffer from allergy symptoms in the spring to begin treatment at that time. However, CaJacob says it’s not necessary for everyone to seek treatment.

“If it’s just here and there, drippy nose, itchy eyes and it’s not bothering the child, then it’s probably not anything to worry about,” she says. “But when you get concerned is when it is impacting their quality of life, if they’re not paying attention in school, if they’re stuffy and snotty all the time, scratching or rubbing their eyes, eyes that are bloodshot and tearing then you probably want to seek treatment.”

For children who suffer from asthma, springtime allergies can be especially concerning. “Typically children with asthma are already using a rescue inhaler a couple of times a week. If they’re doing it more than that then they really need to see their pediatrician or an asthma specialist to step up their regimen during pollen season,” CaJacob advises.

It can be tough to avoid pollen exposure in the springtime other than staying indoors.
CaJacob usually advises patients to minimize exposure and limit opening windows and doors during this time of year. Parents can also be aware of the daily pollen report given by the local weather forecast.

If you think your child suffers from seasonal allergies, keep a diary of symptoms and possible triggers and discuss with their pediatrician. They may recommend allergy testing.

8 Kid Friendly Breweries in Birmingham

The Birmingham Brewery scene just keeps getting better, we now even have what’s considered a “Brewery Trial,” what’s even better is that many breweries in the area have created a family-friendly environment, complete with outdoor games, green spaces, and ample room for children and pets to run around and play. As a result, it’s no surprise that on pleasant days, local breweries are teeming with Birmingham families enjoying a leisurely afternoon.

Here’s a list of our favorite Birmingham Breweries that are great for a family outing!

Please keep in mind, when taking children to a brewery, you should exercise caution and make responsible decisions. Remember, it’s primarily a drinking establishment, and while it may be a fun hangout spot during the day, it may become more of an adult-oriented venue in the evening.

Brock’s Gap Brewing
500 Mineral Trace | Hoover

Quite possibly THE most kid friendly Brewery, in our opinion, This space is nothing short of AH-Mazing! TONS of outdoor space for the kiddos to play cornhole, and to run and just be kids. If you love sitting outside on a beautiful day, you will love this brewery. Bonus! If your kids play sports at the Hoover Met or Finley Center, Brock’s Gap is right next door. While they don’t have a kitchen they do offer up food trucks. You can follow their Facebook page for a schedule. They also host lots of events, adults (and kids)

Hi Wire Brewing
2901 4th Ave South

Photo: HiWire FB

A mix of gameroom and great outdoor vibes, we love this newer to Birmingham brewery. Located downtown near Pepperplace it would make a great Saturday add-on to your Farmer’s Market run. The inside has fun games and great wall art, and the outdoor patio is great for taking in a great spring afternoon. No kitchen but they do feature food trucks. Visit their facebook page for events and scheduling.

Ferus Artisan Ales
101 Beech Street | Trussville

Enjoy a local IPA and fresh air at the outside pavilion at Ferus Artisan Ales, the anchor establishment of Trussville’s new entertainment district. Drink a flavored stout at the outside bar or take it to a picnic table while you watch the kids play tag on the green space. Grab some chef-curated eats from the full-menu restaurant including a “cub” menu with a junior smash burger, chicken tenders, and grilled cheese. Finish up with a family-shareable s’mores dip for dessert. Watch sports on the jumbo screen or catch a live concert on the pavilion stage. Pets on leashes are allowed in the outdoor area so bring your furry family members too!

Oversoul Brewing

Great food from the Back 40 kitchen (griddle dog, YUMM-O)(kids menu available!) up to 25 beers on tap and plenty of space for the kids to run or play corn hole. Four legged furry kids are most welcome.

Website

Monday Night Brewing
14 12th Street South | Birmingham

While they don’t have a big yard for running around, they do have a pretty cool space that we think kids will dig… What kid doesn’t love dinosaurs and a big Connect4 game they can play on a patio? Monday Night offers up a tasty Mexican menu WITH kids options… Score! Also watch for the occasional kid friendly event, like pumpkin carving in the fall!

One of the OG Breweries in the Magic City, Avondale never disappoints. What’s not to love about a confined grassy area where the tiny humans can let loose? Home to lots of great live music, delicious brews, food trucks and fun events.

Keep in mind that most of our local breweries offer up a family friendly atmosphere, these are just a few of the spots we frequent, do you love one we didn’t mention? Share in the comments so we can be sure to check them out too!
