Discover LaGrange, GA: A Perfect Getaway from Birmingham, AL

If you’re looking for a quick, charming escape from Birmingham, let me tell you about LaGrange, GA. Just a short 2-hour drive, LaGrange is like stepping into a Hallmark movie—quaint, historic, and bursting with charm.

Exploring LaGrange:

From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by LaGrange’s picturesque streets. Imagine strolling through local boutiques and indulging in mouthwatering treats from places like Crave Cookie and the Medicine Cabinet Soda Shoppe. The shops, the main street, the town square—it all felt like the perfect backdrop for a Hallmark Christmas movie. And guess what? LaGrange actually was the filming location for a Hallmark Christmas movie in 2023! (yes, we googled it!) Downtown LaGrange is also home to a couple of museums and for nature lovers, it’s close to The Thread, a multipurpose trail that stretches 29 miles and connects LaGrange’s parks and attractions. Great for walking and biking.

Top Attractions:

The highlight of our trip? The Animal Safari Park! We got up close and personal with zebras, buffalo, deer and more. With 500 acres and over 550 animals, it’s one of the most unique attractions we’ve ever experienced. We drove through in our own car, and it was so worth it to go at our own pace. If you ever do this, take your own car, trust me on this one. And, pro tip. Get an extra bag of food and don’t touch it until you hit the half way point, the little guys at the back of the park are hungry too and you’ll fly through that food fast, it’s impossible to pace yourself, they’re so cute you’ll want to feed them all.

Just a few minutes from LaGrange is the Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor water park. If you’re opting for a day pass to the park, head over for a night and day in LaGrange to extend your trip, you won’t be sorry.

Food and Shopping

LaGrange boasts a variety of dining options everyone in the family will love! We enjoyed delicious Mexican cuisine at Trios Cantina and amazing pizza at Karvela’s. In the Hillside District, we discovered cute outfits at Home & Thread Thriftique, had lunch at Beacon Brewing, and the BEST ice cream at Rock Salt Milk Bar. I’m not kidding—this ice cream is life-changing! It’s made fresh from natural ingredients, and their waffle bowls taste like sugar cookies. Seriously, if you go for nothing else, go for the ice cream!

Accommodations:

Courtyard Marriott. Located within walking distance to so many of the shops, boutiques, restaurants, movie theater, Wild Leap Brewery, we walked everywhere the first day and night. So very convenient. If you’re into camping, we’re told there are some good camp grounds nearby.

Why LaGrange?

If you’re planning a quick getaway or a trip to the safari or water park, add a night or two in LaGrange. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a charming town with lovely people, and it’s the perfect spot to unwind and explore.

For more information about LaGrange or to plan your visit (hello, Moms Weekend and Nutwood Winery… We’re coming for you!) Visit the LaGrange Website

Seussical Jr at Red Mountain Theatre

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos.

Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.  Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! Seussical JR. provides wonderful creative opportunities in terms of set design, lighting and costuming and can easily accommodate a large cast of expandable “Seussian” creatures.

FREE Whoville Hoopla for ages 4-14 before the show.

Partners In Kids Health: Preventative Choking

Do you know how to recognize the signs of choking or what to do if it happens?

According to Nancy Tofil, M.D., the director of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at Children’s of Alabama, choking is one of the most common causes of unintentional injury or fatality among children. It is most common for children under the age of 3. Choking is usually caused by food, toys, or other small objects that can get stuck in a child’s windpipe.

“If you think about a child, their airway is the size of their pinky,” said Tofil. “So, it is much smaller than our pinky and our airway, which makes them much more likely to choke.”

Children younger than 4 years old should avoid eating foods that are easy to choke on, such as nuts, raw carrots, popcorn, and hard and gooey candy. Foods like hot dogs and grapes should be cut into small pieces.

If your child is choking, call 911 immediately or have someone else call. If you are trained to perform the Heimlich maneuver, do so immediately. To see a demonstration of how to perform the Heimlich maneuver, watch the video below.

Recognizing the Silent Signs of Drowning: Essential Summer Safety Tips for Moms

As we transition into the heat of summer, fun times with the kids often revolve around swimming. However, alongside the excitement of pool days comes the critical need to be vigilant about drowning risks. Each year, 350 children under the age of five drown in pools nationwide. Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under five, following motor vehicle accidents. In Sunbelt states like California, Florida, and Arizona, it is the leading cause of accidental death in this age group.

The Shocking Truth About Drowning
What’s even more disturbing is that around 50% of these drownings occur within 25 yards of a parent or adult. Alarmingly, in 10% of cases, the adult is watching the child drown without realizing it. This misconception arises because drowning doesn’t look like the dramatic, thrashing scenes we see on TV.

What Does Drowning Really Look Like?
Here are the subtle and often silent signs of drowning every parent should know:

Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with mouth open
Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hair over forehead or eyes
Not using legs – vertical position
Hyperventilating or gasping
Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
Trying to roll over on the back
Appearing to climb an invisible ladder

Contrary to popular belief, a drowning person may look like they are just treading water. To be sure, ask them, “Are you alright?” If they can answer, they are likely okay. If there is no response, you may have less than 30 seconds to save them. Remember, kids make noise in the water; if they become quiet, get to them immediately to find out why.

Understanding the Instinctive Drowning Response
Here are some crucial facts about the Instinctive Drowning Response that every parent should be aware of:

Unable to Call for Help: Except in rare circumstances, drowning people cannot call out for help because they cannot breathe.

Mouth Submerging and Reappearing: A drowning person’s mouth alternately sinks below and reappears above the surface of the water.

Inability to Wave for Help: Nature instinctively forces drowning people to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface to lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

Involuntary Arm Movements: Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements.

Upright Position with No Kicking: Drowning people remain upright in the water without evidence of a supporting kick. They can only struggle on the surface for 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs unless rescued by a trained lifeguard.

Stay Vigilant and Safe This Summer
As we enjoy the summer and make plans for pool and beach days, let’s stay informed and vigilant to keep our loved ones safe. Understanding the real signs of drowning and responding quickly can make all the difference. For Birmingham parents, ensuring a fun and safe swimming experience for your kids is just a little knowledge away.
