Homemade Holiday Cards

Receiving family holiday cards are one of my favorite things about this season. I love hearing about life from friends and family and seeing how everyone has changed. Store bought cards are beautiful but in my opinion, homemade are super special! You do not need to be an artist to create meaningful cards for those you love and to prove it I have put together some awesome examples that are easy and kid friendly.

Thumbprint Card

Supplies:

Brown stamp

Sharpie pens

Card-stock paper

These are so easy and personable to each family! I fell in love the first time I received one. Each family member stamped their thumb on the front of the card and then drew the cutest reindeer features on each one. Simple but oh so precious!

Yarn Art Card

Supplies:

Yarn

Hole punch

Card Stock

Beads (optional)

Hole punch or needle punch your template onto the front of your card. Using a needle or kid craft needle and yarn thread your template to desired look. I have seen these as ornaments, stars, Santa, etc. You can really make this your own.

Ornament Card

Supplies:

Buttons or jewels

Glue

Black pen or sharpie (or thin ribbon)

Card-stock

Glue your buttons or jewels in your preferred pattern. Once they are dry use your pen or sharpie to draw stings or hooks from the top of the ornaments. I have also seen people use thin ribbons at the top to make the hanging ornament look. Very cute either way. Add a family name or holiday message!

Glitter Cards

Supplies:

Glue (personal preference)

Glitter

Card-stock

This is another card that you can get really creative and personal with. We have seen woodland animals, snowflakes, trees, winter characters, etc. and all have been so cute and simple. You can print out your template and trace it onto your cardstock or free hand it. Line it with your glue and then sprinkle on your glitter. Shake off excess and allow to dry completely.

Spend a little extra time to personalize your cards this year and have fun!!!

About Grace:

Grace was born and brought up in Bessemer, Alabama but has a great love for exploring new places. She has been married for 8 years and has 3 kids, expecting number 4 in December. Having been a student off and on for the last 10 years she is excited to say that she is finally graduating from BYU-Idaho with a degree in Marriage and Family Counseling this year. She loves to learn and share what she learns with as many people as possible. Strengthening and encouraging positive relationships with couples and families is a life goal and passion. Her biggest hobby is her family and finding new and fun ways to accomplish the above life goal in her home.

Teaching Good Manners

Good manners are not usually something you hear about in relation to children. My kids are known for their “friendly” scowl and nonexistent polite words. With every nose pick, sneeze in face, and lack of shown gratitude I feel a deep sense of failure. We decided to make that a priority and found some easy ways to teach manners that have actually worked.

Tell Good Stories

There are unlimited books on manners that give examples of children with bad manners and then children with good manners and why it matters. One of our favorites is “Manners” by Aliki. It is funny and cute and has been easy for my kids to remember throughout their day.

We are also big on rhymes. My kids memorize rhymes easily and the book “Monster Manners” by Bethany Roberts is one they can recite back to me because they love it so much.

We also tell a lot of made up stories usually involving a situation from our day where we could have used better manners. So far this has been extremely effective for my toddlers.

Lead by example

We have been trying to eat meals together as a family at least once a day and that provides the perfect opportunity to show my children proper manners at the table. I make a point to demonstrate what is appropriate and give lots of praise as they remember and copy good manners. It is more difficult for them to notice my manners throughout the day but I try to include them in any process where I am thanking others or asking for permission. Their dad is really good at saying please to our children when he needs their cooperation. They not only enjoyed being asked politely but seemed to not mind helping as much either.

Reward System

Of course my kids most enjoy our reward system. We have a manners chart with each child’s name on a row. Every time they are caught using good manners they are rewarded with a sticker for their row. At the end of every week they receive a small prize for every set of ten stickers they have earned. This has by far been the biggest motivator and has also allowed the kids to notice and praise each other for good manners.

Children will never be perfect little polite robots but they can be civilized human beings. Hopefully these suggestions will be just what your family needs to experience a few less badly timed toots and belches!! Good Luck!

Melted Snowman Oreo Truffles

As fun to make as they are to eat! Try these yummy Melted Snoman Oreo Truffles!

Ingredients:

Double stuff Oreo’s (they stick better than regular Oreos)

1 package of cream cheese

White Candy coating (almond bark or something similar)

Edible markers

Mini Oreo’s

  1. Start by crushing your double stuff Oreo’s. I use a food processor to get it to a sand like texture. Mix your crushed cookies with the cream cheese until completely blended.
  2. Shape into balls and put in the freezer for about 15 minutes or until hard.
  3. Follow the directions on the white chocolate candy package as to how to melt it down. Quickly coat hardened balls in the melted candy and place on wax paper dry. This needs to be done somewhat quickly before the candy re-hardens. If you notice it getting to tacky just reheat it being careful not to overcook it.

It’s okay to have extra coating underneath the truffle since it is supposed to look like a melted snowman.

  1. Once they are completely hardened add a dot of melted candy to the top side and add a mini Oreo for a hat and draw on your snowman face with the edible markers.
  2. Keep refrigerated until ready to eat.

Enjoy!
