Spring Break in Birmingham

Backyard Adventures and Brain Awareness Week at McWane Science Center

Pop by the McWane Science Center to check out their newest exhibit, Backyard Adventures! From the biological interactions between plants and insects, and the zoology of nocturnal animals to the horticultural know-how that goes into growing giant vegetables, the mathematical genius needed to lay pavers and the feats of construction that can go on in the shed, the backyard is full of science. Inside the exhibit you’ll find:

Paver Puzzle: Someone has started this DIY project and hasn’t had time to complete it. Can you help complete the path using odd shaped pavers?

Food Web Pond: Explore the intricacies of animal-insect-plant interactions at the pond. Investigate which creatures rely on other creatures to survive in this frog-eat-insect world.

Garden Golf: Try your hand at the backyard– themed mini golf. Be warned — you’ll need more than good putting skills to get around this course!

Walking Through the Seasons: Plants grow very slowly. Take a walk through our digital garden and observe plants growing in super time. Can you spot the changes that usually take months or years to happen.

Bee’s Eye View: Take a look at the garden through the eyes of a bee or a dog. Using special lenses, see how different creatures see the world around us.

Open Daily thru April 29th

The slide is open and daily showings of ‘Mac and Wane’s Excellent Adventure’ in Rushton Theater. Brain programming features programming with UAB.

Check out what’s playing at the imax if you want to catch a movie while you’re there!

Spring Break at the Birmingham Zoo

There is no better place to spend your Spring Break than the Birmingham Zoo! Soak up the sun and pay a visit to your favorite Zoo animals this Spring Break at the Birmingham Zoo. They’re also offering a Spring Break for the Kiddos if you’re looking for something for them to do while you work! Click here for those details

March 24th – March 31st

Topgolf!

Four! Check out one of Birmingham’s Newest Attractions just for fun or with their Spring Academy, half day clinic for kids. Topgolf Spring Academy is three days of non-stop entertainment and learning that kids will love. This program includes all of the components that make up the great game of golf. From chipping, putting and full swing, to the rules and etiquette, kids will learn everything they need to know to improve their game. Each Academy is designed and taught by our golf professionals from Topgolf U in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Spring Academy is staffed with a low student-to-instructor ratio to ensure each Junior Golfer receives in-depth, hands-on attention while he or she develops a winning golf swing.

Urban Air Adventure Park

Just in time for Spring Break, Urban Trampoline park will be opening their new Adventure Park featuring their brand new Go-Kart Attraction. In addition to all the jumping you can stand, you’ll now be able to race your hearts out.

Autobahn Indoor Go-Karting

For even more Go-Karting fun, check out Autobahn Indoor Go-Kart track. Autobahn Indoor Speedway provides a premier indoor go-kart racing experience to hundreds of thousands of racers every year. From professional racers to novices out to try something new, they offer a fast-paced thrill that is approachable for all.

For more information and pricing, visit their site.

Park Picnics

There are so many great parks in and around Birmingham you couldn’t possibly fit them all in in just a week, but weather permitting, you can get in a few. Our favorite spot for a picnic is Railroad Park. So much space for the kids to run and play, ride bikes or throw frisbees and footballs. Take a blanket and your cooler and spend the day. You can also buy a pretty inexpensive lunch from The Boxcar Cafe’. For other picnicking locations, check out Homewood Park or even Overton Park. Both have great open grassy areas and playgrounds for the kiddos.

If you’re up for a little drive, check out Orr Park in Montevallo. Dubbed one of the most unique parks and nature preserves in the south, Orr Park, bordering the picturesque Shoal Creek, is Montevallo’s crowning jewel. This forty-acre park features traditional amenities such as athletic fields, playgrounds, a walking trail, picnic tables, pavilions, a gazebo and restroom facilities but the magical cedar tree carvings throughout Tinglewood remain the greatest local attraction. Pedestrians and cyclists traveling throughout the park are as likely to amble by gnomes, a dragon or a fish eating a snake as they are to pass by a local family walking their dog. Tinglewood is solely credited to Mr. Tim Tingle, a coal miner by trade, who took it upon himself to transform storm-damaged cedar trees into glorious works of art in the early 1990’s.

Climb at High Point Climbing

High Point Birmingham offers a Kid Zone specifically for young rock climbers looking for a fun challenge. The 4,000 square foot area offers 16 auto belays, 7 top ropes and a 10 foot tall kid’s boulder. Kids as young as 3 years old can enjoy climbing in the Kid Zone. This area is included in any Day Pass or Membership.

Got an Anti-Veggie Kid? We have an answer!

Veggie Bread! Do you have a carb-loving, veggie-hating kid? Here’s a great recipe to try, and as a bonus for a  great time-saver, you can use baby food from the jar instead of making your own puree! Give it a try and let us know how it works!

Ingredients
2 cups whole wheat flour (or what you have on hand)
2-3 tablespoons soy flour (omit if you’d like but it adds protein)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/3 cup brown sugar (or other sweetener)
2-3 tablespoons honey (optional)
1 egg
3 cups vegetables, pureed (6 jars of baby food)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions
1 Preheat oven to 350°F.
2 Spray muffin pans or line with muffin papers.
3 Mix ingredients with electric mixer until well blended (I never mix dry then wet or cream butter and sugar — if you’d like to by all means use all the bowls you want!).
4 Fill muffins 2/3 full with batter.
5 Bake 25 minutes until or toothpick comes out clean.
6 Cool partially in the pan then remove to wire rack.
7 Store half in an air tight container.
8 Freeze the other half. Microwave to defrost.
9 I like to use sweeter veggies. Usually 2 jars of sweet potatoes, 1 of sweet peas, 1 carrots, and 2 mixed veggies (you can find spinach, green beans and corn this way).
10 If you are using your own steamed vegetables, you may need to add some fruit juice to thin it out to the consistency of applesauce.
11 If you don’t have 3 cups of vegetables, make up the difference with unsweetened apple sauce or mashed bananas.
