Hello, December! We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.. Hard to believe it’s December and Christmas is around the corner.

Lots of Holiday Happenings around town, a German Festival, Snaps with Santa at Wrapsody in Hoover, you need to make time to see the Festival of Lights at Oak Mountain Amphitheater and The Holiday Spectacular opens at Red Mountain Theatre Company.

Grinch Day – Barnes and Noble Summit
Join us in celebration of Grinch Day. Special Storytime featuring the holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Coloring and activities to follow. Costumes welcome.

A story time designed especially for babies and their caregivers. Stories and music provide interaction for the babies and time for caregivers to talk and share with each other. Ages: Birth to 18 months. Registration Required. Registration will begin one week prior to program date.

Explore the Museum for portraits with a Museum educator. How are the portraits in the galleries different from each other? Come back to Bart’s ArtVenture to create your own unique portrait!

Our annual The Polar Express Storytime. The Polar Express story will be read, along with some activities. Kids can come in their PJs too!

Saturday December 6th:

Birmingham’s Fourth Annual Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market)
German food & beer, Glühwein, Arts & crafts, Christmas ornaments and gifts, Live Christmas and classical music, Children’s Entertainment, Tannenbaum (Christmas) tree sale, and a special guest appearance by SANTA and his helpers. Celebrate this traditional German event of the holiday season.
FREE FDSK membership not required.
Santa and his helpers are scheduled to arrive at 4:00 PM

Story on the Mountain – Ruffner Mountain Nature Center
Join Ms. Jerri for this monthly free event. December’s story will be “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert with a craft following.

Celebrate the beauty of the season in The Gardens with American Girl fun! Enjoy crafting with fragrant plant material such as evergreen and cinnamon, a short hike, holiday story, and delicious treats while learning how your favorite American Girl characters celebrate the holidays.

Lorikeet Aviary – Our Lorikeet Aviary has more birds than ever! Zoo guests can feed these exotic birds every day. You and your family will see these birds’ behavior as they eat nectar out of your hand.

PELICAN FEEDING – A great way to see our pelicans in action is to witness them eating their favorite treats near the pelican boardwalk.

RHINO ENCOUNTER – Embark on an African adventure and experience one of the world’s most extraordinary animals, the Southern White Rhino. Watch from only feet away as our zookeepers engage in hands-on interaction with the animals inside their African-themed exhibit. Don’t miss this exciting encounter with one of the largest mammals on the planet!

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
