Birmingham Events Calendar: June 26th – July 3rd

More fun to be had this week at all of the local libraries.. Make sure to check with your local library to see their entire list of activities. 4th of July Celebrations kick off this week, you can see our full list here. Our Barons are back home later this week and the Birmingham Zoo will be celebrating 4th of July weekend with Free admission to veterans as well as all active and retired military and their dependents. (ID required)

Libraryflix – Homewood Public Library
Popcorn and refreshments served. Located in the Large Auditorium.

A horned fairy turns wicked when her wings are stolen by a boy who later becomes king. For revenge, the fairy puts a spell the king’s new born daughter, Aurora. The girl is cursed to prick her finger on a spindle and die by her sixteenth birthday. As the evil fairy watches the girl grow-up, the curse is changed from death to eternal sleep. Can the evil fairy or Aurora ever find their happy endings?

On your Mark, Get Set, Fables – Avondale Regional Library
And they’re off! Join Lee Bryan, That Puppet Guy, for another exciting day at the races as “The Tortoise and the Hare” weaves its way through the tales of “The Lion and the Mouse” and  “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”! It’s a night of Aesop’s fantastic fables fun at the Avondale Library. 24-hour advance registration required.

Get Up and Go Tuesday – Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest
A “moving” activity.. Kids in second through sixth grade will enjoy all kinds of new experiences. This week rip and romp on our obstacle course! Compete with other kids for the top prize or just do your personal best!

The Birmingham Zoo invites families and friends to come out and join in all the fun the Zoo has to offer over the Fourth of July holiday. In honor of this holiday, the Zoo is giving FREE admission to veterans as well as all active and retired military and their dependents. Bring your proof of military service (military ID card, dependent ID card, driver’s license, etc.) to take part in all the fun the Zoo has to offer. On July 4th, the Zoo will celebrate the 10th birthday of the red river hogs, Star, Spangle and Banner! While you’re here, feed the lorikeets in the Schaeffer Eye Center Lorikeet Aviary*, take a ride on the Jane H. Brock Soaring Safari Zipline Adventure*, ride the Full Moon Bar-B-Que Wild Slide*, watch the Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show and much more!

Birmingham Zoo:

The Birmingham Zoo offers a variety of daily activities from Giraffe and Pelican Feedings to Bird Tours and Lion Training. For a daily schedule of whats happening at the Zoo, visit their site.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.
