Birmingham Events Calendar: June 12th – June 19th

It’s a PACKED calendar this week! Our Birmingham Barons are home again starting Wednesday. The Libraries are rockin’ with fun storytimes and special performances. It’s SUPERHERO SATURDAY again at McWane Science Center – a day you will enjoy as much as your kids! Don’t forget! Sunday is Father’s Day, make his day extra special!

Sunday June 12th:

Magic City Con – Hyatt Regency Wynfrey
Magic City Con is a family friendly fan convention in the Birmingham area. We will have Special Guest Appearances, Panels, Vendors, Authors, Artists, and a KidCon.

We have several tracks including Sci-Fi, Gaming, Cosplay, Pop Culture, Anime/Manga, and more.

Ready Set Science – Woodlawn Public Library
The science of sports is all about motion and Newton knew sports. This engaging, fun, and educational show from Dynamic Education Adventures will explain Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion and how it applies to sports. An object at rest remains at rest unless The Science Lady is in the house.

Tuesday June 14th:

Get Up and Go Tuesday – Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest
A “moving” activity.. Kids in second through sixth grade will enjoy all kinds of new experiences. This week come bust a move and learn how to dance Hip Hop with Birmingham Dance!

LOLgo Paint – Emmet O’ Neal Library
We’ll provide everything you need – including step-by-step guidance – to paint a masterpiece. Wear something you don’t mind getting paint on. Rising kindergarten – 2nd graders. Sign in at the children’s desk at drop-off.

Etc. Out American with Atlantic Coast Theatre – Emmet O Neal Library
Atlantic Coast Theatre presents “Our America,” an original musical. Bring the whole family.

Scales, Tails and More – Avondale Regional Library
Did you know that animals are natural born athletes that come outfitted with their own sports equipment and protection gear? Join Alabama 4-H and their cast of kid-friendly critters as they present some super jocks from the world of scales, tails, and more.

Father’s Day Limited – Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum
Make great memories with your Father and treat him to a day of fun this Father’s Day on the Father’s Day Limited! Take Dad on a relaxing one hour train ride through the scenic forests of Shelby County aboard our restored historic train cars. Father’s ride at ½ regular coach fare when accompanied by one or more of his children in coach class!

Want to give Dad the ultimate railroading experience? Then purchase tickets to ride in the locomotive with the engineer or in the caboose with the brakeman!

The Father’s Day Limited will be an experience you’ll remember with Dad for years to come!

Adults ages 12 and up – $14.00
Child ages 2 through 11 – $10.00
Caboose – $25.00
Locomotive – $35.00

The Father’s Day Limited train ride lasts approximately 1 hour. Please arrive 1 hour prior to your departure time to pick up your tickets at the Calera Depot, use the restrooms at the Gift Shop, and get in line at your boarding location. Make sure to visit the exhibits in our Depot Museum, our collection of railroad equipment in Clark Yard, our working Signal Garden, and buy your father a gift at the Gift Shop.

Tannehill Trade days – Tannehill State Park
Shoppers and swappers come from far and near to Tannehill Trade Days in search of tools, clothing, jewelry, knives, furniture and other treasures. We have 350+ vendors to come and see. (March – November) rain or shine.

$4.00 Seniors (Ages 62 and older)
$3.00 Children (Ages 6-11) ages 5 and under free

Father’s Day!

Free Admission for Dad! – McWane Science Center
Superman is pretty cool…but we all know who the real hero is–Dad. To honors fathers everywhere, “Dear Old Dad” gets in FREE on Father’s Day at McWane.

Free Admission for Dad! – Birmingham Zoo
In recognition of Father’s Day, all fathers get in FREE to the Birmingham Zoo with the purchase of a full-price child’s admission ticket. Throughout the day, guests can check out Schaeffer Eye Center Wildlife Shows, watch the Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show, experience Predator Zone and much more.

Birmingham Zoo:

The Birmingham Zoo offers a variety of daily activities from Giraffe and Pelican Feedings to Bird Tours and Lion Training. For a daily schedule of whats happening at the Zoo, visit their site.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
