Birmingham Events Calendar: January 31st – February 7th

Hello, February!! Hard to believe how fast we sailed through the first month of the New Year! Ringling Bros is in Birmingham through Sunday night, if you have time to catch a show, do it! Lots of Storytimes, and if you’re a Harry Potter fan check out what’s happening at the Homewood Library this Thursday Night!

Valentines Day is just around the corner, and many local libraries are accepting cards for Children’s Hospital, get those in before it’s too late!

Sunday January 31st:

Ringling Bros and Barnum Bailey Circus – BJCC

Join us for popcorn, drinks and a fun sing-along family film from Columbia Pictures!

Tot Time with Ms Eve, Mardi Gras – Avondale Regional Library
Be prepared to get silly as we celebrate Mardi Gras! Tot Time is geared for 2- to 4-year-olds with an individual caregiver; no groups please. 24-hour advance registration required.

Toddler Tales – North Shelby Library
Stories, songs, fingerplays and crafts make up a lively 30 minute program designed especially for short attention spans. Registration will begin one week prior to each storytime. Ages 19-36 months. Registration Required.

Groundhog Day – Birmingham Zoo
All Alabamians want to know: will Birmingham Bill see his shadow or not? Join the Zoo for the annual Groundhog Day prediction in the Birmingham Zoo Auditorium and find out if we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Don’t miss a chance to play kid-friendly games, watch a special Wildlife Show and more.

The whole family is invited to join us for an evening of wizarding fun as we celebrate the magic of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.

American Girl Girls Just Like Me – Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Creating something yummy for our tummy and sharing with another is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day at The Gardens. As we explore the story of Grace Thomas, an enthusiastic young baker, we’ll learn a little about French culture and bake a delicious treat in honor of Heart Day.

For children age 5 and above

Beaker Bash Galactic Road Trip – McWane Science Center
This year’s event will take you out of this world on a Galactic Road Trip through the stars. Visit new planets, meet strange lifeforms and even take a detour into a black hole.  Funds raised through Beaker Bash directly support statewide science education programs throughout the year.
5pm – 8pm

10th Annual Chinese New Year Festival – Boutwell Auditorium
The Chinese American community will celebrate Lunar Chinese New Year in Downtown Birmingham Boutwell Auditorium. To showcase ancient articrafts, dance, music and food. Focus on extravaganza colorful stage show and culture booths. Great for K-12 students diversity/Asian educational learning. Come to explore China in Birmingham!
$5 per person, age 12 and under is free
11am – 2:30pm

Family Tour, Terrific Textiles – Birmingham Museum of Art
Join the Museum educators to explore the galleries in a fun, interactive experience! Discover Bart the Art Bat’s favorite artworks during these FREE, drop-in tours. After your tour, visit Bart’s ArtVenture to make an art project inspired by what you saw. What will you discover?
Terrific Textiles!: Across many different time periods and cultures, textiles have been used for practical, ceremonial, or decorative reasons. Learn more about the art of textiles at the Museum!

Birmingham Zoo:

The Birmingham Zoo offers a variety of daily activities from Giraffe and Pelican Feedings to Bird Tours and Lion Training. For a daily schedule of whats happening at the Zoo, visit their site.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
