Summer is winding down and many local programs are taking a break from their normal activities.. We still managed to round up a calender full of fun for this week, so see what you might be able to squeeze in between that back to school shopping and running around!

Sunday August 2nd:

Zoo Fun Days – Birmingham Zoo
Visit the Zoo during Zoo Fun Days to take advantage of discounted $5 admission to help celebrate the Birmingham Zoo’s 60th Anniversary year! Guests will have the opportunity to get up-close with the elephants at the Boma Encounter, experience Predator Zone, enjoy a Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show and be surrounded by beautiful butterflies in Granny’s Butterfly Garden. Come learn how the Zoo uses enrichment activities to help keep the animals mentally and physically fit. Guests can also see live animal demonstrations, feedings, chat with the keepers and more! Special activities:

10am-2pm – Face painting, craft and bio fact table in the Boma Yard
11am – Boma  Encounter
11am – Sea Lion Fun
2pm – Rhino Encounter

Mary Poppins – Presented by the Red Mountain Theatre Company
One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven TONY Awards, including Best Musical.

Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers, and astonishing stagecraft. This show is a perfect opportunity to showcase a strong, iconic female performer, as well as unique special effects and illusions.  Rated G

Tuesday August 4th:

LEGO Mini Build – Riverchase Galleria
Due to safety and build experience standards, builders must be between the ages of 6-14 to participate. The mini model must be completely built in store. Registration is on a first come first serve basis and quantities are limited. Stores will no longer accept walk ups on the night of the event.

You can learn how to build a cool mini model, and take it home – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only. Models are not for sale and cannot be purchased.

Saturday August 8th:

Kids Ultimate Fitness Challenge – UAB Campus Green
The Kids Ultimate Fitness Challenge is the nations largest mobile fitness event for kids traveling from coast-to-coast dedicated to helping keep kids healthy and active. At the Kids Ultimate Fitness Challenge, kids of all ages get the opportunity to flex their physical fitness by participating in a time-based obstacle course that includes sprinting, jump roping, wall crawls, hurdles, jumping jacks, sit ups, and tunnel crawls, before finishing off the course with a 20 ft. confidence climb and 60 meter dash to the finish. The event features loads of activities for the whole family to enjoy including Xtreme gaming fun for all ages and on-site programming designed to inspire kids and families to live a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Hops for Hope – Avondale Brewing
Adults, kids, and dogs are all welcome at Avondale Brewery or Pathways’ 2nd annual Hops for Hope benefitting homeless women and children in Birmingham. Cold beer, popsicles from 80 Pops and a misting tent will keep you refreshed while you enjoy music from The Beatlads and Tres Homeboys. Grab a plate from the Saw’s BBQ truck, peruse a variety of silent auction items and prizes, and vote for your favorite football team in our unique Pig Skin Show Down featuring Pathways’ newest celebrity,Penny the Pig. And don’t worry about finding a babysitter. Bounce houses, games, and arts & crafts will ensure your kids will have a blast, too! So bring a lawn chair or blanket and get ready for a fun-filled afternoon emceed by the ever-entertaining Lisa Mason of 106.9 The Eagle. Purchase your tickets here or (if you cannot make it) register as a virtual attendee. All participants can help us impact women and children’s lives by raising funds on their personal fundraising page (created upon registration). Then, help us spread the word by sharing the event with friends on social media!

Tickets are $10 in advance ($15 at the door) and include a free beer. Children 12 and under are free.

Kids Craft – Joann Fabrics
Kids will learn during a 1-hour session with an instructor how to create their very own friendship bracelet to give to their best friend. Your child will exude confidence in creating and giving their best friend a bracelet made with their love. This craft will also expound upon their creativity. Ages 8 & older. One 1-hour session.

The 1-hour learning session is $10 per child. To register child for session check with your local Joann for appropriate dates and register in store. For the Joann store located in Hoover use the listed dates and admission telephone listed.

Birmingham Zoo:

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.
