Whew! Spring break 2016 is in the books and we survived!! If you don’t need much time to recover before filling up your calendar with local fun, then check out what’s happening around the Magic City this week!

Eensy Weensy Ice Cream Social and Book Signing – Apple in the Seeds Offices
Eensy Weensy Ice Cream Social and Book Signing Meet the author, purchase books and get your books signed. Join the Eensy Weensy Book Club Enjoy free ice cream, photo booth, Tickle Me Pretty Spa Demo, Face painting. First 50 children get a free Eensy Weensy Stuffed Animal Sign up to be an E.W. Alabama Auto Show – BJCC
It will be a dazzling spectacular featuring the 2016 model year domestic and import cars, light trucks, SUVs, hybrid vehicles of all sizes, and vans. More than 400 vehicles from manufacturers all over the world covering two levels of the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. Manufacturer’s reps, product specialists, and your local Birmingham Automobile Dealers Association will be on hand to assist in product education, feature comparisons, safety standards and other consumer points of interest on hundreds of makes and models . . . all under one roof.

$12 Adults
$6 Children 6-11
Children 5 and under Free

8th Annual Lebanese Food and Cultural Festival – St. Elias Maronite Church
Two day event featuring food and culture of Lebanon. Authentic food including kibbee, grape leaves, tabouleh, grilled chicken, homus, baklawa and more. Dancing by our children performed on stage throughout Friday evening and Saturday.

Traditional Lebanese Dancing by our youth on inside stage Friday evening beginning about 6:00 pm, and Saturday afternoon and evening beginning about 12:30 pm.

Saturday April 9th:

Mt Laurel Spring Festival
Birmingham food trucks, Off the Hook, Cantina on Wheels, and Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Que, will be present, with delicious dishes you can keep in hand while strolling streets filled with goodies from craft vendors and local farmers. From jewelry, art, and handcrafted goods to home décor, clothing, soaps, and more, every “locally-made lover” will find something to take home. The season’s best produce will be available from area farmers, with baked bread and candies from mom-and-pop shops and homegrown bakeries.

In the children’s park, kids of every age will be delighted by attractions including inflatables, hayrides, face paintings, and a petting zoo. Get ready for hours of fun (and a ready-to-nap toddler) after exploring this section of the festival.

Before leaving, stop by the Cherry Laurel model home. Beautifully decorated by designer Kay Green, the showcase home is one of many new Mt Laurel home plans.

Cajun Cookoff, Girls Inc – Railroad Park
Make plans to attend the this casual, family-friendly event featuring a Cajun cooking competition as well as live zydeco music by the Swamp Poppas in Birmingham’s beautiful Railroad Park. Enjoy taste-testing all of your Cajun favorites including gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice and much more! Your vote will help determine the winner of the cooking competition.

We’ll have fun activities for kids of all ages including balloon artist, face painting and games! The event also features a silent auction with various items including dinner at top-rated Birmingham restaurants, spa and golf packages, art, hotel stays, kids activities, and even more Last year’s event was attended by more than 1,000 people, and we’re expecting an even bigger crowd this year.

Family Yoga in the Gardens – Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Enjoy this unique opportunity for healthy fun with the family in the gardens of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This energetic class will incorporate individual and partner yoga poses for strength and balance, plus breathing exercises to help foster calm and focus. Our garden inspired crafts will assist in cooling the mind and body.

This series will take place at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. There will be no Family Yoga in-studio on these dates. Rain or shine! We will move into a classroom if the weather calls for it.

Health Fair – McWane Science Center
Let’s get healthy! McWane Science Center and UAB are partnering to present a health fair with free health screenings and demonstrations. Join us for free vision screenings, blood pressure tests, exercise demos, Zumba, and more! This event is free with museum admission.

Birmingham Zoo:

The Birmingham Zoo offers a variety of daily activities from Giraffe and Pelican Feedings to Bird Tours and Lion Training. For a daily schedule of whats happening at the Zoo, visit their site.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
