It’s Not Our Fault if Your Kids are Bored!

You can always tell it’s summer by how packed out the weekly calendar is.. Summer Camps, VBS and Summer Movies are gearing up as well as another round of home games for our Birmingham Barons! Check out Alabaster City Fest, or some of the fun storytimes and activities happening at your local library!

Sunday June 1st:

Vulcan’s 110th Birthday Bash – Vulcan Park
Make plans to attend the BIGGEST birthday bash in Birmingham! Vulcan may be the world’s largest cast iron statue, but he still needs help blowing out his birthday candles! On Sunday, June 1, Vulcan Park and Museum will host a festive outdoor community celebration offering fun activities for the whole family in celebration of the BIG GUY’s 110th Birthday! Admission will be charged and includes admission to the party, Vulcan’s Observation Tower, Museum and a special exhibition in the Linn-Henley Gallery.
$5 all ages 5+.
4 and under and Vulcan Members are FREE!

Alabama Phoenix Festival – Sheraton Hotel Downtown
The Alabama Phoenix Festival is a family-friendly, multi-genre, fan convention featuring celebrity guests, authors, comic book writers and artists, vendors, and much more. We have activities for people of all ages and welcome you to come join us in the fun.

Pre-registration: $20-$55 (three-day only)
On-site: $15-$65 (three-day and single day)
Children under 8 are free with the purchase of an adult membership.

To attend APF all you need is a 2014 Membership.  A Membership includes a 2014 badge access to APF 2014 events and programming, Expo Hall, Author’s Alley and Comic’s Creators Corner, with the few exceptions and restrictions.  Memberships also include the 2014 Program book and schedule (while supplies last).  You may preresgister for your 2014 3-Day Membership through  through our online store or by downloading the 2014 membership application form and mailing it to us with a check or money order.

Tot Time with Ms. Eve – Avondale Library
A fun look at the scientific method, this tot time is filled with hands-on science experiments! Join Mrs. Eve as she presents stories, songs, and crafts geared for 2 to 4 year olds with a caregiver. 24-hour advance registration required.

LEGO Mini Build – Riverchase Galleria
learn how to build a cool mini model, and take it home – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only.

Family Tours, Africa – Birmingham Museum of Art

Join the Museum educators to explore the galleries in a fun, interactive experience! Discover Bart the Art Bat’s favorite artworks during these FREE, drop-in tours. After your tour, visit Bart’s ArtVenture to make an art project inspired by what you saw. What will you discover?

Marsh Mud Madness, Roger Day – Avondale Library
It’s time to kick-off the summer with an explosive night of musical fun. Grab your boots! Get your hat! And join us as Roger Day, a two-time Parent’s Choice Gold Award Winner, stomps in the mud…the marsh mud!
24-hour advanced notice of attendance required.

Amelia the Brave – Spain Park Highschool
Amelia the Brave, was written, scored, and designed by students. This award winning show tells the story of a young girl who must cope with the sudden illness of a loved one. The story is told using puppetry, shadow puppetry, music and animation without speaking: the play is performed without one word being spoken. Come see the show judges called “luminous,” “beautifully done… sweet, fresh, and unique,” a show that “made me fall in love with theatre again.”

Special guest Dolores Hydock will be joining the program as well.
Tickets are $8 and $5 for students and will be sold at the door. No advanced ticket sales.
Tickets, concessions and theater doors open 30 minutes prior to the show.

Big Bang Bingo – Avondale Library
It’s time to take your place and get ready for a lightning fast round of Book Bingo. You’ll be surprised at the big array of books and other prizes you may win when you yell out BINGO with a bang!

Mobile Dairy Classroom – Clay Public Library
Trained instructors will demonstrate how to milk a cow, describe how milk goes from the farm to the consumer, and then answer questions from the audience. This is an innovative program that brings the dairy experience directly to children. Join us for our 5th annual summer library program! We have lots of fun events planned for the whole family, whether you are participating in the reading portion of the program or not! Everyone is invited; we want the whole community to get involved, so help us spread the word! Prizes will be awarded to children, teens, and adults who are checking out library books and reading! Summer events will be held on various days and times in order to give everyone a chance to participate. A schedule of events is available on our facebook page and our web site. Free Train Rides & fun family activities!
Alabama Operation LifeSaver, the Alabama Department of Transportation, and the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum co-sponsor Rail Safety Day at the museum! Come see exhibits, safety activities, as well as train rides! 9AM – 3PM Great for the whole family!
To be eligible for the free ride, you must attend Safety talk by Operation Lifesaver before hand so come early!
Train times: 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 pm, 1:45 pm, 2:45 pm.
Train ride last around 1/2 hour to CR 301 and return.

Something for the entire family, young or old. A FREE day of fun, music, arts & crafts, and unique entertainment. Bring your chairs or blankets and sunscreen and stay from morning to evening. See website for complete schedule of events.

VOTED BEST ANNUAL FESTIVAL in Shelby County!
For your convenience, we have several FREE public parking areas with shuttles running to and from the festival site. Shuttles begin running at 8:45 a.m. and continue until the end of the festival. We also have reserved handicap parking available with easy access to the festival area.
Come early, stay all day! Gates open at 9 a.m. Tents and umbrellas may be used for shade during the day, but must come down before the concerts begin. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen! Remember, it is a June Music Festival in Alabama.

Alabama EDSers Summer Watermelon FestivalHomewood Park
Alabama EDSers is excited to announce we have a Summer Watermelon festival. The location is Homewood Central Park. Proceeds from the race will go toward research of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). We will have lots of old time festival games and contest, a cake walk and more! Come have fun in the sun! Everyone receives an attendance bag and the prizes are AWESOME!
Festival Admission is $5.00/person. This will give you access to food, drinks, and booths.
You can purchase tickets for games, cake walk, etc.

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.
