Don’t let the summer slide sneak up on your kiddos! Get them in on the summer reading fun with some of these programs happening around Birmingham!

Barnes and Noble:

Earn a FREE Book!

The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is here to help you on your way, encouraging you to read books of your own choosing and earn a FREE book, simply by following these three easy steps:

1. Read any eight books this summer and record them in your Summer Reading Journal (English or EspaƱol). Tell us which part of the book is your favorite, and why.
2. Bring your completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 16th and September 5th, 2017. Find a Store
3. Choose your FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on the back of the journal.

Chuck E Cheese:

Chuck E. Cheese has a summer reading program where kids can earn free 10 Chuck E. Cheese tokens for reading each day for 2 weeks. Print your calendar and get started.

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge:

Scholastic has a summer reading challenge where kids read and then go online to record the minutes they’ve read this summer. They’ll also be able to take weekly challenges to earn rewards. May 8th – September 8th. To participate, visit their website.

Sylvan Learning’s Book Adventure

Sylvan Learning’s Book Adventure program is more than just a summer reading program because it goes on all year long. It’s a great way to motivate kids to read by earning prizes.

When a child participates in Book Adventure, they get to take quizzes over books they’ve read and then exchange their quiz points for prizes.

Birmingham Libraries

Birmingham Public Libraries are a great source for summer fun and great reading incentives. This year’s theme will be “Build a Better World” Check your local library for their specific line up of programs and prizes, as they vary by location. Below are a few of the Kickoff parties happening:

Emmet O Neal Library Summer Reading Kick Off Carnival: Over 30 games, train rides, and free popcorn available. Individual tickets are 50 cents, and most booths require 1-4 tickets. Purchase of a Combo Band includes the Fun Run, a t-shirt for the first 300 to register, all booth games, 1 ice cream, 1 pucker powder, 1 drink, and 1 try at the “claw” machine.

Homewood Public Library – Build a Better World Party/Summer Kick off Party: Enjoy face painting, a bouncy house, and group LEGO building with Magic City Lego Users Group. Magic City Sweet Ice and Old Town Pizza will be at the event with food for purchase.

Hoover Public Library Summer Kick Off Party: Kickoff summer reading at Veterans Park. Inflatables, crafts, games, airbrush tattoos, petting zoo and much more!

Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest Summer Reading Kick off: Circus-style performers will start our Summer Reading program off with a bang! Acrobats, juggling and silks performers will keep you entertained.
