Flora Meets a Bee at Birmingham Children’s Theatre

Okay, if you’ve got little ones and you need something to do on a Saturday morning in November, this one’s for you. Birmingham Children’s Theatre is opening Flora Meets a Bee, a brand-new show about friendship and finding joy in the little things.

It’s only running three Saturday mornings, starting November 7, so go ahead and get it on the calendar before the holiday chaos takes over.

The Story

Flora is a little girl in foster care who doesn’t have a lot of people or things she can call her own. Then she meets a bee. Like, an actual bee. And she decides right then that it’s going to be her friend.

It’s such a sweet, hopeful story, and I love the heart behind it. Director Paige Clabo says she wanted to help people understand “that foster care does not define a child or their journey.” If your kids come out with questions, it’s a really gentle way to start that conversation.

Flora Meets a Bee was written by Morag Shepherd, directed by Paige Clabo, and stars Astrid Jerez and Rylie Jackson.

Why We Love This One

There’s Spanish sprinkled all through it. It’s mostly in English, but everyday Spanish words and phrases are woven right into the story. Whether your kids speak Spanish at home, are learning it at school, or have never heard it before, they’ll pick some up without even realizing it. And for a lot of kids, it’s a chance to see themselves up on that stage, which is a big deal.

It’s sensory-friendly. No loud music, nothing that’s going to make anybody jump. Just calm, gentle storytelling. It’s in BCT’s Wee Folks Theatre, where kids sit on carpeted risers in a space made just for them, and there’s a Sensory Room right next door if somebody needs a minute.

It’s brand new. This script has only been done one other time in the whole country, so Birmingham gets to see it before pretty much everybody else.

It’s about 40 minutes. If you have a four-year-old, you already know that’s the sweet spot.
