Travel: OWA Amusement Park and Entertainment Destination

Nothing says summer like a trip to the amusement park, whether you’re vacationing near a park or making it the focus of your summer road trip, kids (and parents) love the fun and thrill of roller coasters, rides and midway games!

About OWA Amusement Park and It’s Accommodations:

Centered on a 14 acre lake, OWA Amusement Park is the Alabama Gulf Coasts newest and coolest spot for family fun and entertainment. Located in Foley, Alabama, OWA is the perfect side trip if you’re already at the beach or will make a perfect weekend destination.

Located on the property is the beautiful Marriott TownePlace Suites. We couldn’t have been happier with our stay there. The room was spacious, the staff was friendly, they even have a kids hangout area with foosball and a flatscreen. Our favorite spot in the hotel quickly became the expansive back patio that over looks the park and lake. Comfortable seating and a fire pit make it the perfect space to sit, relax and unwind after a fun filled day at the park.

Because of it’s close proximity to the park, we loved that we could park our car and didn’t have to use it again until we checked out. Walking to the park and all of the restaurants in Downtown OWA was a breeze, but if you decide to drive, parking at the park and downtown OWA is free. The Marriott TownePlace offers free continental breakfast to it’s guests, so you can fuel up before heading out!

Downtown OWA:

Inspired by some of Coastal Alabama’s most beloved small towns, this is a streetscape designed for strolling, dining, shopping and entertainment. From the vintage streetlights to the shade of balconies, visitors are reminded of their favorite downtown spots in places like Foley and Fairhope.

The mix of offerings in Downtown OWA is familiar, too. Popular Coastal Alabama shops and restaurants share the streets with some of the biggest names in the country, like Paula Deen and Wahlburger’s. And while it’s all within earshot of roller coaster thrills, Downtown OWA is located outside The Park at OWA’s gates, so there’s never an admission charge.

Activities at OWA:

In addition to the 21 amusement park rides, OWA features games, and the new interactive splash pad, Wacky Waters. Throughout the day inside the park, there are fun family activities like face painting, hula hooping, limbo, dancing and more. You will also find a few shows happening in the park and in Downtown OWA like the skippers, a high flying group that bounce around wowing crowds, and at night, GLOWA a night time block party with fun music, and lights. (shows subject to change based on season)

Being near the beach during the summer means you will probably get some afternoon showers. If you find yourself needing to get out of the rain or heat for a bit, the Arcade is the perfect place. The arcade is located right outside of the park, so admission is not required to play in the arcade.

Dining at OWA:

There is absolutely no shortage of food options at OWA. Inside the park they have the standard Amusement park food and snacks (make sure to try the little doughnuts, they are yum!) In downtown OWA you have a variety of options, we started our trip with a late lunch at Wahlburgers (as in Marky-Mark-and-the-Funky-Bunch-NKOTB Wahlburgs..) So for any NKOTB fan girl, like myself, you’ll see this as a must do. While I didn’t benefit from any unexpected celebrity sightings, I did thoroughly enjoy the food. The burgers were truly delicious and the onion straws didn’t disappoint.

Our other favorite spot was the Groovy Goat, and their “tableside nachos your way.” Groovy Goat is a perfect place to end your day, with sports, live music and a great menu. Bonus, it’s attached to the arcade so the kids can play while you wait for your food!

Other options around Downtown Owa include Crazy Donuts and an Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon – 3 words… Caramel. Pecan. Roll.

Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen and Tratorria Pizza and Italian are both set to open soon!

Booking a Trip to OWA:

Room Rates and Availability vary based on season and day of the week.

As we mentioned above, staying on property is super convenient if you’re making this the focus of your getaway, but if you’re already at the beach, the drive over is quick and easy.

On the OWA website you can search for current deals and specials, like their “Everyone’s a kid” ticket pricing or their “Summer Night” Savings.

The Future of OWA:

While we think that the park is pretty great already, we were excited to learn about their future plans. As you walk the streets of the downtown area, you can see that they have BIG plans to bring in more shops and restaurants in addition to the expansion of a full outside water park, 4 more hotels, RV resort and resort level condominiums.

The future for OWA is bright and we’re excited to watch it grow!

What our Kid Reporters have to say:

“I was never bored, the rides were really fun and they have rides for all ages, I can’t wait to go back!” -Elizabeth

“My favorite thing there was the Cinnabon! I wish I had gotten on the Twister, maybe I’ll do that one next time!” -Harper

“I had so much fun at OWA, my favorite ride was the Twister!” – Avery

Additional parent note: The park is super clean, it seems well run and lines move quickly,  we noticed an uptick in crowds later in the day, which is no surprise given the summer heat.

Children’s of Alabama announces Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC)

PIRC is a confidential phone response center that links adult callers to mental health resources for children and teens.

When a child or teen needs mental health resources , families and caregivers often want assistance determining the appropriate level of care. Children’s of Alabama and the Anne B. LaRussa Foundation of Hope have established the Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC) to help patients, families and providers better navigate the mental health care system.

Anyone with a mental health question or concern regarding a child or teen is encouraged to contact the PIRC at 205-638-PIRC (7472). The PIRC is open seven days a week, year-round from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. as a confidential phone response center linking adult callers to mental health resources for children and teens.

Licensed mental health professionals match patients and their families with mental health services and providers in a five-county area (Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker). The PIRC therapists assess risk factors, answer questions about mental health concerns and provide community resource information and safety planning for future crises.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for Children’s of Alabama to offer an innovative and much-needed mental health service to those in the community,” said PIRC Director Cindy Jones, who, with Children’s Behavioral Health Administrative Director Stacy White, spent a year and a half planning the service. “We provide access to a mental health professional that will guide and support them along the way.”

The PIRC, located in Children’s Emergency Department, is one of only three such centers in the country. The service at Children’s rolled out in March 2018 and has averaged 75 calls per month.

Dr. Tobias Martinez serves as the PIRC medical director. “There is a nationwide trend of increased volume of pediatric psychiatric visits to emergency rooms. Our program’s mission is to help guide patients and their families to the most appropriate level of care,” Martinez said.

For high-risk children and teens who may need services in Children’s Emergency Department, the PIRC will provide crisis evaluations on a first-come, first-served basis, considering treatment room availability and urgency. Patients will be assessed by a mental health team of board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, fellows, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and PIRC staff to determine the appropriate level of care. The PIRC does not provide over-the-phone diagnoses or psychiatric evaluations, over-the-phone scheduling or rescheduling of outpatient appointments, home visits, transportation, prescriptions or refills.

Clinicians emphasize the PIRC is not a suicide or crisis hotline, but instead a valuable resource for parents, physicians, school nurses, teachers, counselors, grandparents, foster parents or anyone who is seeking mental health services on a child’s behalf. Anyone experiencing a crisis should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts should call the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children, offering inpatient and outpatient services throughout central Alabama. Ranked among the best pediatric medical centers in the nation by US News & World Report, Children’s provided care for youngsters from every county in Alabama, 46 other states and seven foreign countries last year, representing more than 676,000 outpatient visits and more than 15,000 inpatient admissions. With more than 2 million square feet, Children’s is the third largest pediatric medical facility in the U.S. More information is available at childrensal.org.

How Hot is Too Hot?

The temps are rising, you’re melting, and your iphone is giving you that scary “over heated” exclamation point. But have you tried telling your kids it’s too hot to play outside? I don’t know about you, but that just doesn’t fly with my kids.

Most kids just don’t care how hot, cold or rainy it is outside and after a few days stuck inside with them fighting and bickering, you probably won’t care either. In fact, you might even pull a trick that my Mom used to pull on us and lock the screen door behind us, with a cheery “Don’t come back until the street lights come on..”

When the temps rise, so do the precautions we have to take when allowing the tiny humans to play outside or participate in sports.

Hot, dry weather can be extremely dangerous. Because sweat evaporates very quickly in such conditions, your child won’t feel sweaty, and neither you nor your child may recognize how much water he or she has lost.

As the relative humidity increases, the effectiveness of sweating in cooling the body decreases.

When the relative humidity is high, sweat drips off the skin so that the cooling benefit of evaporation is lost even at cooler temperatures, resulting in a build-up of body heat.

How do you know when hot is too hot?

According to Athletic Trainer Brendon McDermott, PhD. at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, ” A kid’s tolerance depends on what they are used to” and advises that you take extra caution during heat waves.

Your child will need to drink lots of extra water, eat balanced meals and go to bed early. If your child isn’t feeling well, keep them out of the heat – it’s harder for the body to stay cool when fighting an infection.

Keep in mind the following tips to keep your kids cool during these hot summer days!

1. Kids won’t stop playing on their own. You must remind them to take a break and drink some water.

2. Avoid sugary beverages. Water is always best!

3. Familiarize yourself with current sunscreen guidelines. Apply and re-apply (and reapply) sunscreen. If a shady option is available for play, try to encourage your kids to play out of the direct sunlight.

4. Try to get out earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, avoiding the hottest part of the day.

5. Make sure they are wearing the appropriate clothing. We all know how kids like to dress themselves and during a heat wave, layers of winter clothing just won’t cut it.

When playing outside in the heat watch for signs of fatigue, becoming uncomfortable, and limit your outdoor play to just a few minutes at a time. If we are fighting red ozone levels, it’s probably best to change your plans and look for indoor activities or air conditioned play spaces.

Where is your retreat when we’re hitting the unbearable heat waves?
