5 Healthy Home-Learning Snack/Lunch Ideas to Boost Brain Power

By now, many parents and kids have accepted our role in distance or hybrid learning at least for the short-term. Having nutritious ready-made foods in the fridge will increase the amount of time (and focus/energy) students have to learn from home– not to mention, alleviate some of the stress parents have to deal with by planning ahead.

Patrick Quinn, parenting expert at Brainly– the world’s largest online learning and homework help community– has shared with us some recommendations and tips for healthy/quick school lunches and snacks parents can make for their kids to enhance their cognitive abilities and keep them focused. “This is a time of uncertainty and planning out lunches and sticking to a consistent lunchtime every day can help establish a sense of normalcy for kids,” he says.

Most schools want parents to keep kids on schedule, breaking for lunchtime at the same time each day in between online classes and schoolwork. If you haven’t prepared the lunches ahead, your child may not have enough time to eat before their next virtual class. It’s also important to remember: when your child is learning from home, lunch is not the end of their homeschool day. Lunch is the midpoint. “If I fill them up with empty carbs and sugar they aren’t able to learn from 1-3 p.m. It also makes things like ‘quiet reading time’ a bit of a struggle,” explains Brainly’s parenting expert, Patrick Quinn, who is the father of three school-age children of his own.

So what are some go-to staples and creative ideas for healthy, ready-made ‘school lunches’ this unprecedented school year? Here are just a few…

1. Sandwich Kabobs
This fun lunch idea is easy to prep and has almost endless variations so something is sure to appeal to even the pickiest of eaters. Try making a ‘pepperoni pizza’ with mozzarella, pepperoni, tomatoes, and bread, or a ‘turkey club’ with turkey, bacon, avocado, cheese, tomatoes, and your choice of toasted bread slices.

Brainly parenting expert pro tip? “For kids who eat lunch while chatting with friends on Zoom or while they’re on their computer, sandwich kabobs are an excellent go-to for keeping fingers (and keyboards) clean and non-sticky. They’re also great for eating on the go if your kid wants to take a stroll outdoors and enjoy some nature while having lunch.”

2. Trail Mix
This snack idea is great because it can easily be prepared days in advance, which gives kids the opportunity to get in on the action. This is a great opportunity to give kids the freedom to choose their own snack while also teaching them how to balance sweet ingredients with healthy options. Parents can check out this great list of 21 healthy trail mix recipes for inspiration.

3. Homemade Chips
For a healthy spin on everyone’s favorite snack, try baking apples or zucchini in the oven. You can add your own spices/flavoring to make it the perfect snack for your kids that they don’t even realize is actually good for them. You can also find tons of creative recipes online like these decadent Cool Ranch Zucchini Chips or savory Parmesan Squash Chips.

“During the pandemic, what goes into our kids’ bodies is even more important. Whether at home or face to face, you still want to promote that philosophy of healthy eating because it’s not only important for maintaining our kids’ immune systems and physical health but also for maintaining their moods, energy levels, and mental health,” says Brainly’s parenting expert, Patrick.

4. Bite-Sized Cucumber Sandwiches
This fun snack replaces bread with cucumbers to create healthy mini sandwiches. You can fill them with pretty much anything, including cheese, deli meat, tomatoes, and even spreads such as chicken salad or guacamole. You can also use cucumbers as one of the fixings inside or atop bread (instead of as a substitution for it) then slice them up into mini bite-sized sandwiches. For more ideas on how to spruce up these bite-sized sandwiches, check out this recipe round-up blog post.

5. Energy Bites
Energy bites are a great way to keep kids full between meals due to their combo of protein, healthy carbohydrates, and healthy fats. You can think of them as bite-sized, less messy versions of a granola bar that don’t require any baking and can be easily customized. Check out this simple yet delicious recipe to learn the basic gist of how to make energy bites before concocting your own special recipes.

“These have almost everything your kids need from a nutritional standpoint, all rolled into one tasty and fun snack. Energy bites pack in loads of healthy carbohydrates for sustained energy, protein for growth and focus during the day, and healthy fats for brain development,” adds Patrick.

There are countless other easy, healthy lunch and snack ideas online for parents with kids who are starting out this unprecedented school with distance or hybrid learning. The most important thing for parents to remember is to plan ahead, keep it simple and fun, and stick to a routine that works for your family.

5 Things to Know: Moundville Archaeological Park

The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park is located 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa and is home to 29 massive flat-topped earthen mounds constructed by the Mississippian people and carefully arranged around a vast central plaza. Called “The Big Apple of the 14 th Century” by National Geographic Magazine, Moundville was once America’s largest city north of Mexico. In addition to the museum, village, and the mounds themselves, the park also features a half-mild nature trail, picnic areas, and a campground.

1) There is an admission fee to enter – $8 for adults and $6 for kids. Also, be sure everyone has a face mask – you’ll need them to enter any of the buildings. If your party is larger than 10 people, you’ll need to split into smaller groups.

2) After you leave the welcome center, you have the opportunity to climb 80-something steps to reach the top of one mound, which provides a great view of the entire area (and should help you rack up steps on your Fitbit)

3) You can get a look at lots of the artifacts found on site in the museum building. Here, you’ll also find dioramas of the Mississipian people wearing traditional clothing and holding tools and household items. My kids were convinced the figures were “real” people – they’re pretty lifelike! Before you leave this area, be sure to check out the gift and coffee shops.

4) Just a short walk from the museum and through the woods is a replica of the village in which the Mississippian people lived. You can walk in each hut to see tableaus of crafting, food storage and preparation, and even a burial arrangement.

5) Behind the village, you can catch a beautiful view of the Black Warrior River.

Moundville Archaeology Park is located at:

634 Mound State Parkway
Moundville, AL

How to clean dryer vents and why it’s important

Cleaning dryer vents is a serious task. Clogged vents not only mean longer drying times, but they’re also a top source of house fires. If you notice your clothes are taking longer to dry, it’s time to clean your dryer vents. Learn how with this guide.

What is a Dryer Vent?
A dryer vent is where heated water vapor and lint-filled air escapes the dryer. This air needs to be expelled outside due to excess moisture that would lead to mold and mildew growth if it was circulated back into your home. From the dryer vent, the air is moved through an aluminum or metal duct that safely leads to the outside exhaust vent of the home.

How Often To Clean Dryer Vents:
Household size, how frequently you do laundry, and laundry load sizes all play a role in how often your dryer vents should be cleaned. Since everyone’s situation is different, it’s safe to say that you should clean your dryer vents at least once a year.

Signs Your Dryer Vent is Clogged:
Extra Lint Buildup – If you’re noticing more and more lint build up between dry cycles in your trap filter, you’re due for a clean!

Excess Dry Times – If your laundry needs more time to dry, or it won’t fully dry, this is a sign of clogged vents. Drying a normal size load of laundry should take roughly 40 minutes.

Burning Smell – If you detect a burnt smell coming from your laundry room as a load runs, it’s time to clean! This burning smell means your dryer is clogged and has to work harder to dry clothes.

Hot and Humid Exterior – If you notice your laundry room feels more humid or that your dryer feels especially hot, this is a telltale sign of lint buildup. The heat and moisture sit in the dryer since it can’t exhaust through the vents. The heat is a dangerous warning sign that your dryer could catch on fire if it overheats. Also, don’t wait until the spring to clean your dryer vents, because more dryer fires occur in the fall and winter.

What You’ll Need:
After learning the basics of dryer vent systems and lint buildup, here’s what you’ll need to clean out your dryer vents:

Vacuum (and long hose attachment)
Bristle brushes with long flexible handles. Easily found in dryer vent cleaning kits
Gloves
Screwdriver
Dust mask

Step-by-Step Dryer Vent Cleaning

1. Remove and Clean Lint Trap Filter
Lint trap filters should be routinely cleaned before every dry cycle. Regular maintenance is an effective way to prevent lint buildup in your dryer. Clean the lint trap vent by wiping off all lint on the screen with a paper towel.

Additionally, dryer sheets can leave a residue on your lint trap filter that builds up with each cycle. If this is the case for you, clean the filter with a scrub brush and warm water with dish soap. Then, rinse off with water and dry with a fresh towel.

2. Vacuum the Lint Trap Housing
With the lint trap still removed, you can now clean the lint trap housing. This is where brushes from a dry vent cleaning kit come in handy. Using a long flexible brush, loosen any stuck lint in and around the opening. By gently twisting and rotating the brush, you’ll be able to get out tough to reach clumps of dirt. If you’re asthma or allergy-sensitive, we recommend you wear a face mask while you clean so you don’t breathe in dust and lint.

During this process, you can also use a vacuum with a long brush attachment to clean lint after you loosen it up. You can also use the vacuum to clean off the brush bristles. Repeat these steps until there’s no more lint.

3. Disconnect the Dryer
Start by unplugging your dryer’s energy cord. Or, turn off the gas valve if you own a gas dryer. Then, pull the dryer about a foot away from the wall. Next, disconnect the valve clamp from the back of your dryer. This could require unscrewing the clamp with a screwdriver. Some clamps can just be simply pulled off by removing any tape. Now, remove the end of the duct that connects to the exterior wall. Similar to the step above, this may require a screwdriver or it could be as simple as removing taping around the vent.

4. Brush Out Back of Dryer
Wearing gloves, remove lint from the back opening of the dryer. Then, take another long, flexible brush to loosen and remove all stubborn lint. Vacuum inside with a brush attachment to extract lint as well as cleaning off the brush bristles as you go. Repeat brushing and vacuuming as needed until the back of the dryer is clear.

5. Brush Out the Duct
Brush out the duct with a long, bristle-brush to loosen the trapped lint. Push the long coiled brush all the through the duct until it reaches the other side. Then, pull out the coiled brush out on the other side. Repeat this step several times to push out as much lint from the duct as possible.

Note: If you have rigid, flexible ducts made of aluminum, it’s recommended to replace it with smooth-walled metal ducts. Rigid interiors actually make it easy for lint to get trapped in the grooves of the duct.

6. Brush Outside Exhaust Vent
Next, go outside and unscrew the exterior vent cover from your home. Vacuum and brush from the outside as you did for the inside. Be sure to clean and brush off the vent cover as well.

Pro Tip: Place a trash can underneath the vent that leads to the outside. This will catch most lint that falls and make it easier to vacuum up after.

7. Reattach Ductwork
After cleaning all of the openings and vents, it’s time to reattach the ductwork. Before reattaching, be sure to check that your duct is intact and no damage was done. Then, tighten the duct to the dryer and the outside clamp with a screwdriver. Next, seal the duct to both areas using flexible foil duct tape. Avoid using regular plastic duct tape because it dries out over time.

8. Reconnect Dryer
Finally, move the dryer back toward the wall, plug it in or turn the gas valve back on, and voila! Your vents are now clean and your dryer is back to working safely and efficiently.

If you’re still not comfortable cleaning dryer vents on your own or want the most thorough clean, it’s time to call the pros. Stanley Steemer offers a number of services for your duct systems such as dryer vent cleaning, air duct cleaning, and exhaust fan cleaning. Call 1-800-STEEMER to schedule your services today!

Home Buyer Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make

Whether you’re getting married, looking for more space to raise a family, want to stop renting and start investing, or maybe you’re looking for a rental property you can make some extra cash on – The reasons people have for wanting to buy a home can vary. However, whatever your reason, you’ll want to be sure to avoid these top 4 mistakes (trust me, you can’t afford to make them!)

#1: Let’s start by talking about “Agent Hopping” – This is something you’ll want to avoid doing when it comes time to purchasing a home. To position yourself for success when it comes to finding and getting an accepted offer on your (insert correct answer: dream home, starter home, investment property, etc), you’re going to want to have someone representing YOU! On the flip side, let’s say you don’t want to be tied to anyone specifically, you think you know enough about the process and want to be in control. Well in that case you’re most likely going to be contacting the agent who is listing the house you are interested in. That means you won’t have anyone to educate you about the process (it’s not HGTV, so unless you’re a licensed Real Estate Agent, there are going to be things you don’t know). You won’t get detailed information on the market, recommendations for how much to offer or any red flags you should be aware of.

You’ll want to interview agents before you start looking at homes so that you can find someone you trust to be your advocate throughout the entire process. Buying a home is often the biggest financial investment you will make and you’ll want someone who works in this industry to be your advocate along the way.

#2: Miscalculating the costs associated with buying a home – Purchase price, check! Down payment, check! All set? Not so fast! There are other costs associated with buying a home that you’ll want to be aware of well before the time comes. Your down payment could potentially be the largest expense but there is also the earnest money deposit, the home inspection, the appraisal, radon testing and other expenses you’ll want to talk to your Real Estate Agent and lender about.

When it comes to costs associated with the financing side (in addition to your down payment), you’ll want to check with your lender to find out an estimate on your closing costs and how much you’ll need up front for homeowner’s insurance and taxes. You can also see if there are any first time home buyer programs that may help offset some of these costs. Sometimes, the lender will allow you to ask for a certain percentage in closing cost credits from the seller. Depending on your situation, this is something you could include in your offer to purchase to help offset some of your closing costs. Make sure to discuss these options with both your agent and lender so that you fully understand how they work and how best to use them.

#3: Skipping the Home Inspection – “But I’ll save $500 if I skip it and I’d rather spend that money on new home decor from West Elm!” – Pretend Buyer. Home inspections are not necessarily required in order to purchase a home. So during the transaction it might seem intriguing to some buyers to skip the home inspection and save some extra cash to put towards the home itself. However, I highly, highly, highly (I REPEAT – HIGHLY) advise against skipping the home inspection. Number one, you’re going to want to know about any major issues the home could potentially have. You’ll also want to know about smaller repair items that need to be addressed along with any future maintenance issues to watch out for. A home inspector is there to spot the major red flags that could end up costing you a lot of money if you don’t figure them out before closing. Ask your agent for home inspector recommendations or feel free to do some of your own research. You can use whoever you feel comfortable with as long as they are licensed in your state.

#4: House hunting without a pre-approval – I’m sure you’ve heard this one as your eyes roll back into your head and you think “enough is enough with the pre-approval!” As much as it may sound like a broken record, it is a big deal and you’ll want to know why! For starters, most agents won’t show you a home without a pre-approval letter and most sellers won’t entertain an offer without one either. So if a house comes along that happens to be your dream home and you’re not prepared, you could miss out just because you didn’t take the time to get pre-approved (and trust me, it doesn’t take long).

Lastly, if you haven’t found a lender you want to work with or gotten pre-approved, you may be shopping outside of your budget. You might know what your monthly budget is but there are several other factors taken into consideration besides your paycheck. Have you checked your credit score lately? Do you know your debt to income ratio? What about the various types of loans and what they entail? Some will require higher down payments than others. If you start searching for houses listed for more than what you can actually afford, you’ll set yourself up for disappointment when you realize you can’t buy the house with the awesome home theater you had your heart set on.

If you’re ready to jump into the home buying process right now, make sure you’re avoiding these big mistakes! If you want to discuss this in more detail, feel free to reach out and we can set up a time to grab coffee (your go-to coffee order is on us!) We love teaching buyers about the ins and outs of the home buying process to ensure they have the best experience possible and avoid any mistakes that can throw you for a loop!

Pandemic Parenting Tips

SAMI-Aid, a patient-focused telemedicine platform and healthcare concierge company that offers on-demand access to medical professionals of a variety of specialties, including pediatrics as well as mental and behavioral health, recently hosted a free webinar offering positive parenting advice amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The webinar aimed to aid parents in knowing the signs of mental health issues and identifying resources to help children navigate mental health issues they are experiencing.

“Since the coronavirus pandemic began, SAMI-Aid has seen increased demand for telehealth behavioral and mental health services, both for adults and juveniles,” said John Farhangui, CEO and Founder of SAMI-Aid. “This webinar in our Health Bites series was aimed towards helping parents manage their own stress to help them in dealing with the challenges their children are facing.”

Dr. Sara Heron, M.D., a board-certified child psychiatrist with Bay Area Clinical Associates, offered a variety of tips to parents, including:

  • Manage your own stress. Kids see stress in their parents and internalize it. An effective way to manage stress is by getting enough sleep, making healthy dietary choices, getting regular exercise, spending time safely with friends and family, and participate in activities that you love.
  • Challenge negative thoughts. Do not dismiss fears of a child, but do not accept them either. Parents can help children navigate negative thoughts by asking simple questions, such as “If your fears happened, would it be the worst thing in the world?” or “Are you sure that will happen, or could it turn out a different way?” Coping statements like “You can handle this,” and “This will pass,” can also help.
  • Positive parenting starts with effective communication. Praise is a powerful way to show support for your child and encourage good behaviors. It is also important to employ empathic listening. If you do not understand why your child is behaving a certain way, sometimes it is best to ask them directly.
  • Keep a consistent schedule or routine. It is absolutely okay to have free or spontaneous time for kids to be creative or do other activities, but it’s also important for kids to have a routine or schedule which they know will be followed. Work together to come up with family rules, including privileges and consequences, so that children fully buy in to the house rules.
  • Balance screen time within reason. With online learning, communication, and activities, it can be challenging to determine an appropriate amount of screen time for your children. Watch for changes in your child’s behavior related to increased screen time to evaluate if a screen time diet should be considered.
  • Do not forget to have fun. During stressful or challenging times, schedule fun activities and family time. These activities do not need to be extravagant; they can be simple such as watching a movie together, taking a walk, going for a drive, or cooking a meal together.

The full Positive Parenting webinar can be viewed on SAMI-Aid’s Facebook page. As an additional resource, SAMI-Aid created an infographic to help parents understand important information about childhood mental health including data on how prevalent the issue is in the United States, signs to watch for that may indicate a mental health disorder, and how parents can help their children. The infographic can be viewed here.

SAMI-Aid offers on-demand access to medical professionals of a variety of specialties, including pediatrics as well as mental and behavioral health.
