Does Living With Bad Air Affect Your Childs Life?

According to the American Lung Association the greater Birmingham area has the worst air quality in the south, and some of the worst air quality in the country. Poor air quality is not healthy for anyone, but especially for children, since their lungs are still developing. If a child already has an existing respiratory condition such as asthma, bad air can become downright dangerous.

Alabama First is a new organization working to bring attention to the public health problems associated with poor air quality. If your child is suffering from a respiratory condition and you are interested in helping to make a difference to improve our air, they want to hear your story.

How to Master SmartPhone Photography

We recently ran an article giving you tips on how to take good pictures of your kids, even though you’re well, not a photographer. Turn off the flash, don’t force a smile and the best time of day to get that money shot. All of that is great advice when you’re working with an actual camera, but something that I was thinking about the other day, (when I could have really used my good camera) was that I rarely have it with me. I’m willing to bet that most moms find themselves in that position 90% of the time.

An impromptu trip to the ice cream shop on the way home leads to an adorable photo op of a kid with ice cream on her nose. You need to capture the moment so you can facebook the cuteness to all of your friends, only all you have with you is your iphone/smartphone. How in the world can you expect to capture the full impact of the moment with just a shotty camera phone? Have no fear, BirminghamMommy is here and we’re sharing what we’ve learned!

1. Hold steady – hold your phone with 2 hands. The less shake you have the better your picture will be. Granted taking a picture of your kids being still is a whole other issue. Sometimes turning your camera sideways can help you control your shot a little more.

2. On an Iphone Press the “Camera” icon and hold it down while framing your shot. The picture does not actually take until you release your finger from that icon. This makes a huge difference in getting a good shot of a child before they duck out of the frame.

3. Spend a little money on a good camera app. A couple that we like for the iphone are Camerabag (see pics below) ,  Hipstamatic and Format 126 (see above pic) The cost is about $2.00 each and will make a huge difference in creating something really cool with some of the pictures you are able to snap. I absolutely love the Helga and 1964 features in the Camera bag. You can also add Photoshop or Photogene (which works like photoshop) to your phone allowing you to crop or tweak the images and play with the contrast. Both apps will save your updated version without losing the original.

I was able to take this picture (the original on left) and do a couple of cool features with those apps.

Using the Helga Feature
(below)

Using the 1964 feature (left)

A couple of other apps that are pretty cool for taking pictures are:

Photostamp: PhotoStamp “stamps” any image stored on your iPhone with a copyright line, URL to your Web site, your name, or any custom line of text, and then saves a copy of that image in your Camera Roll. Options include a custom stored text line, a button to make it easy to include a copyright symbol, and black or white text. Great for Moms who blog!

Project 365 Take a picture every day of the year, become a better photographer and never forget a day in your life. This application will allow you to easily create and update your own project 365 photo album. To add new photos use your iphone’s built in camera or choose from your photo album. You can share your photos using facebook, twitter or email.

Cameras on the Android keep getting better here are a few great apps for this smartphone:

Snap Photo Pro – This well-rounded photography app includes a timer, multi-shot bursts, stability mode, brightness and contrast adjustment, zoom features and photo filters. Some users with other devices say it beats built-in camera features by a mile. Cost 99 cents.

FX Camera – FxCamera lets users apply a bunch of fun, cool effects to photographs. Effects include ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye, SymmetriCam and Warhol. This app is equivalent to several popular iPhone camera apps like CameraBag, Picoli or PhotoBox and is a great (and free) cure for iPhone envy.

Have you mastered the art of SmartPhone photography? What tools/apps do you use to help you capture those precious moments?

Working Mommy Madness: Accepting the Mess!

By Harmony Hobbs

Neat-freak (neet-freek).
•    A person compulsively obsessed with cleanliness.

There are only a few things in this world that I really believe in. They include (but are not limited to) love, laughter, wine, Spanx, and Paula Deen. The last two items go hand in hand, obviously.

Something I really hold dear to my heart is having a clean and comfortable home. I’ve lived in many spaces of different sizes and comfort levels and no matter how small, dank, or stank it was … if it was clean and had throw pillows in it, it felt like home. My current home contains throw pillows. My husband does not understand them. Note that I did not say that my house is clean, because it’s not. Having a child changed things. Before the baby, I only had my husband to clean up after, and while I sometimes found it annoying, it was certainly manageable. Then my son arrived. And he enjoys making messes, just like his father. Boys and men are funny that way. How do they get handprints everywhere? I see them wash their hands, yet … the handprints continue.

I spent the first 6 months as a new mother frantically cleaning. Looking back, I’m pretty sure I acted like a lunatic. I was a tornado of postpartum rage, whipping through the house barking out orders and picking up dirty bottles. I realize that I should have been napping (sleeping when the baby sleeps is a CROCK, by the way), but there was literally a trail of items marking a path around the house.  My neat freak tendencies plus my husband’s crazy messy habits, combined with a new baby and all that entails, clashed in a big way.

Many arguments, some therapy sessions, and a few rounds of Lexapro later, I have accepted the mess and now I am working on trying to embrace it. I’m still in the awkward stage of my new relationship with messes …. I’m not attracted to them at all – they make me cringe, in fact– but I would like to like them. I would also like to hire someone to clean my house on a weekly basis, but unfortunately the daycare gets most of our expendable income these days.

Since I started working on trying to be okay with messes I have developed a few coping mechanisms that help me get through my day without having to reach for a cocktail:

•    Get up before everyone else. It’s worth it to rise at the crack of dawn if it means quiet time to yourself. See #2.

•    Make time for yourself! Time where you can just BE. No one is bothering you, the phone isn’t ringing and you aren’t rushing to get somewhere. It     can even be in the car. Don’t make phone calls, just drive in silence. It’s refreshing.

•    I do laundry every day. Just one load.

•    “Shallow Clean.” This is what I call the kind of cleaning I have time for. It’s otherwise known as “Half-Assing It.” I vacuum, straighten up a little and call it a day. Just enough to give the overall appearance of cleanliness.

•    I have stopped looking at my baseboards altogether. I recommend you do the same.

•    Teach your family how to clean up after themselves … and good luck to you.

Motherhood is messy. The first step is acceptance. Step Two is to believe a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.

Harmony blew into Birmingham after Hurricane Katrina and is a self-proclaimed “never home maker” striving for a balance between her career and family life. Visit her blog at Working Mommy Madness

52 New Things – Week 31

Angie –

Let me start by saying that we were at the beach last week and I put zero effort into anything that didn’t require soaking up the sun and lounging by the pool. I was going to mention the new gum that I tried while I was there but realized it was given to me by a freind and I had no idea of the details – so I have to go with some new fudge. It was called Caramel Nut Roll (I think) and it was divine, I made 2 separate trips to the candy store in Seaside to purchase these little morsels of heaven. *sigh*

Trish –

My new thing this week was letting loose a little. We were on vacation and it’s always a struggle for me to let go of routines and rules.  But, I’m proud to say that I let my kids fall asleep watching movies every night on vacation.  I was afraid when we got home they’d try to whine to get more movie time, but they didn’t.  I guess it just goes to show that if you’re going to do something like that, vacation is the time to do it!

For more New Things or if you’d like to participate in 52 new things along with BirminghamMommy and many others – please join in by posting your new thing to your blog, facebook or on twitter (use #52newthings) – Also, you can head over to www.willblogforshoes.com to link up every Thursday!

Apps 101: The Good, The Free, The crApp

If you don’t have an iPhone, I know you’re tired of hearing everyone yap about how awesome they are, and tired of watching them use their finger to glide across the screen… I feel your pain. Well, I did until I got one and now I’m all about it! My iPhone’s main purposes are to call people, check email, facebook/twitter, and babysit my kids. What?!?! Yes, I said babysit. Case and point– while waiting in the sick kid room at the pediatrician’s office, you can either let Junior:
a. play with the disease infested toys
b. roll on the floor and pick up every germ possible
c. play a game or watch a show on your iPhone

(Cue the silence as everyone runs to the Apple store)

Apps for occupying kids:
Smack Talk (Mommy Britt’s pick)- a few cute little woodland creatures will repeat whatever you say to them in sqeaky chipmunk voices. Kids love this, and I especially give it kudos for getting reluctant talkers to practice talking in a fun way. Cost: $.99

DoodleBuddy- Free! Basically a magnadoodle on your phone. And free!! Did I mention that?

crApp to avoid: Music Pop, no thanks! It shows an animal using bubbles to bounce from building to building. But when the animal falls, it shows it getting electrocuted and dying. Huh?!?! This is where my 4 year old asked “Did he die? Did I kill him?”

Happy App’ing! What apps are your favorite? And remember, mommy likes FREE ones… 🙂
