Event of the Week: Halloween at the Southern Museum of Flight

We love to have an extra excuse to wear a Halloween Costume! We also love the opportunity for a fun, family, fall outing! If you do too, then you’ll want to be at the Southern Museum of Flight this Saturday, October 27th from 9:30am -4:30pm.

ALL costumed guests will get in free! So, play along Moms and Dads. There will be a scavenger hunt and trick or treating on the way to tour the museum. What a great way to spend the day as a family!

So, load up your little zombies and have some fun!

Homework Should Be a 4 Letter Word

School is officially in swing, how’s it going? If your family is like ours, you’ve had to adjust a few things in your life. Number one on that list is homework. Some parents complain about homework, but it is crucial in establishing the study habits that will make successful high school and college students. I miss the days when we could play in the fall leaves all afternoon, but I understand the importance. I also make sure to communicate that to my kids.

*Never complain about homework or the teacher in front of your child.

So, we adjust and we make it work. At first it was awful. My son came home tired and hated doing homework. That’s understandable- he was learning a lot of new stuff and was tired from being there all day. Now he has had well over a month to get in to the routine, and the tired grumpiness is gone.

*Make homework a part of your daily routine. Same time, same quiet place.

Now, both of my kids come in from school, lay their homework out, have a snack, and then get started. It took several weeks to set that routine, but it has made everyone’s life easier.

Homework really should be a four letter word… EASY!

Medical Minute: Coping with Breast Cancer

Overwhelming is one way to put it. Being diagnosed with breast cancer is shocking and scary. As a mother, you have people who need you. It can be so hard to stay strong for them when you just need to cry. And at the same time, you’re being asked to make some crucial decisions.

There’s no single method for coping, everyone finds their own way to handle things. But if you’re looking for a few tips, read on:

  • Get educated- learn what you need to know about your breast cancer: the type, stage, and hormone receptor status. The more you know, the more confident you will feel in making decisions.
  • Speak with survivors- No one will understand you better than someone who went through it as well. The American Cancer Society can help you find a support group. Consider asking your doctor or local hospital about their resources as well.
  • Have a go-to person for talking- everyone needs that person who will listen. It can be a spouse, friend, mom, or trusted counselor.
  • Take care of yourself- Make your well-being a priority. Sleep may be hard, but try to get some. Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and try to find time to do the things you enjoy.
  • Keep your family and friends close- When they hear the news, you’ll get offers to help. It’s okay to take them.

Have you or someone close to you been diagnosed with Breast Cancer? What’s the best piece of advice you were given?

Pinspired Soup: Roasted Cauliflower and Aged White Cheddar

Fall is my favorite season- boots, jeans, football, cooler weather, and SOUP. I found a recipe for Roasted Cauliflower and Aged White Cheddar Soup on Pinterest and decided to try it.  I actually hate cauliflower, but this soup may have changed my mind. It tastes like a fancy soup, so it will impress guests. In reality, it’s very easy and you use only basic ingredients. There’s not much to it, but it combines in just the right way. There’s not one ingredient that overpowers the other.

Image from ClosetCooking.com

Roasted Cauliflower and Aged White Cheddar Soup, originally from ClosetCooking.com

Ingredients
  • 1 small head cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon thyme, chopped
  • 3 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 1/2 cups aged white cheddar, shredded
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • salt and pepper to taste
Directions
  1. Toss the cauliflower florets in the oil along with the salt and pepper and arrange them in a single layer on a large baking sheet.
  2. Roast the cauliflower in a preheated 400F oven until lightly golden brown, about 20-30 minutes.
  3. Heat the oil in a large sauce pan over medium heat.
  4. Add the onion and saute until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the garlic and thyme and saute until fragrant, about a minute.
  6. Add the broth and cauliflower, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes.
  7. Puree the soup until it reaches your desired consistency with a stick blender.
  8. Mix in the cheese, let it melt and season with salt and pepper.
  9. Mix in the milk and remove from heat.

Make sure you’re following BirminghamMommy on Pinterest for more Pinspired recipes and ideas.

Mommy Tattoos

Gone are the days when tattoos were only for big burly sailors. In our younger days, we may have gotten a tattoo, but now we’re grown ups with kids and minivans. Is that phase of life over? Lots of suburban soccer moms are deciding to ink up these days.
So what are those moms getting tattoed? Here’s a few ideas we found:

1. Roman numerals of your child’s birthday, on the wrist
2. Tiny stars, one for each child, on the foot/ankle
3. Quotes or sayings
4. White ink, to minimize noticeability

What do you think… would you get inked? What tattoos do you have? And while we’re at it, have you seen any tattoos you liked or that you thought was absolutely crazy?

Vulcan Park and Museum:

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area!

Railroad Park:

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus.

Southern Museum of Flight:

Earn Your Wings – Bring your little pilot and soar above the clouds in our little pilots room. Kids enjoy building aircrafts, flying kites, and more.
Museum Open Tuesday – Thursday
9:30am – 4:30pm
