DIYC: Cupcake Liner Valentines Day Wreath

Kicking off this “Month O’ Love” we thought we would share with you a super easy, really inexpensive Do It Yourself wreath!

I needed something for my front door to make it a little festive for Valentines. It’s been a little naked since taking down the Christmas Wreath. I don’t like to pay a lot for these little holidays so I decided to make one on my own… For less than $5! It’s easy peasy and you can do it too! The texture of the cupcake liners make for a beautiful whimsical decoration for your front door or anywhere in your house

What you need:

– Approximately 100 Cupcake liners – Valentine Themed. (My front door is red so I went with pink and white)

– Coordinating Ribbon

– Heart Shaped board (I bought one for less than $2 at Hobby Lobby, it’s a lightweight wood in the Valentine section)

– Hot glue/Glue Gun

What you Do:

– Scrunch your cupcake liners up from the bottom like little flowers
– Hot glue it on to your board working in small sections

– Once you are finished gluing on your liners, use your ribbon to make a large loop (measured to the desired length for your door) Hot glue the ends on the back of the heart board and let dry.

Extra Steps/Alternatives:

– Paint your board so the edges are pretty
– Use more than one pattern, don’t be afraid to mix it up or add in some solids
– Use a foam wreath (from the dollar store) wrapped in ribbon in place of the board

That’s It! In and out for less than 5 bucks and about 30 minutes! You can even get the kids involved by letting them help bunch up the liners. (Caution: This might make your 30 minute craft into more like an hour craft)

Mindbender Mansion: McWane Science Center

BirminghamMommy got a sneak peek of the new exhibit opening at the McWane Science Center this Saturday!

Mister E. and the Mindbender Society invite you to enter the wonderfully puzzling world of Mindbender Mansion, an eclectic place full of puzzles, brainteasers, and interactive challenges guaranteed to test the brain power and problem solving skills of even the most experienced puzzlers. Adults and children alike will enjoy exercising their minds as they try to master each of the 40 individual brain teasers and the five group activities in this fun and unconventional new exhibit.

If you love puzzles, you’re going to love this completely interactive exhibit. From numbers to spelling, it covers everything. I tried my hand at several of the puzzles, some I got, some I didn’t. I think my favorite game was the giant Spelling Bee Disco Dance Floor. The game will ask you a series of questions and you have to spell out the answers by stepping on the correct tiles.

Mindbender Mansion is incredibly engaging for all ages and generations, as grandparents, parents and children learn from each other to solve the 40 brainteasers and 5 group activities. The exhibit is also great for school groups as it provides teachers the opportunity to engage their students in inventive, out-of-the-classroom problem solving and critical thinking that inspires teamwork and demands creativity.

Bourbon Street, Baby Style.

Not able to make it down to The Big Easy this year for Mardi Gras? Not sure you would even want to if you could? Well you don’t have to miss out on all the fun, in fact, if you invite the right friends over, I’m sure you can have as much fun celebrating at home as you would on Bourbon Street… well, almost.

Now that we have kids, the debauchery that is Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras may be put on the back burner, but it doesn’t mean you can’t still have a good time, make this Fat Tuesday full of family fun..

First up. Food. Choosing food for the event shouldn’t be too difficult when you factor in all of the choices that you get from NOLA. Try some Jambalaya, Gumbo, Etouffee, Po-boys, Red Beans and Rice, or Muffuletta’s, are you hungry yet? I’ll leave you with just one more option.. Shrimp and Grits. For dessert, try your hand at duplicating some Cafe Du Monde Beignets, or you could have some more fun by seeing who gets the baby in the King Cake. If you don’t want to try and make one, you can pick one up from your local Publix.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Mardi Gras celebration without the signature drink… The Hurricane. Why not let the kiddos in on the fun with this Virgin Hurricane Recipe, put it in a fun glass, with an umbrella, then make a not so virgin recipe for the adults. Sit back and you’ll swear you can hear the dueling pianos…. Oh wait, that’s dueling 4 year olds… Sorry!

Now for the real fun, dig out the dress up box. Find all of those feathered boas, crazy hats, glasses and the beads you’ve saved from Mardi Gras past. Don’t worry, no one has to know how you earned them..

Then, set up a parade route through the house and have the kiddos march in a parade while playing some festive music, if you’re feeling super crazy, throw some beads or Moonpies of your own.

Shelby County Extreme Bull Riding – Shelby County Exhibition Center
The Shelby County Extreme Bulls is a professional bull riding competition. Each night bull riders from across the country try to ride the rankest bulls alive to compete for thousands of dollars and a gold buckle! The event is indoors and heated for you comfort. Bull Fest – Blount County-Oneonta Agir Center
No other sporting event in the world combines the drama and danger of bull riding. Bucking bulls may weigh nearly a ton, yet have surprising agility. Most have bad tempers and often it’s after bucking down the cowboy that the most danger occurs…when the bull tries to go romping and stomping over the top of him. Bull riding may appear more a matter of endurance than anything. Not so. Courage, physical fitness, a keen sense of balance, and superior mental attitude are the qualities demanded. Watch how the rider uses his free arm, jerking and thrusting to counter the bull’s spins and lunges; how the rider lunges his own body forward as though to jump over his riding hand, and moves his feet forward to keep grabbing a new hold.

52 New Things, The Wrap Up

Well.. We made it. A year’s worth of trying something new every week.

Angie:

This is my second go at trying something new every week for a year. We did this project several years ago here on the site and included several other local bloggers at the time. While I did make a concerted effort to try new things, I feel like to make it more interesting the things needed to be bigger. Taking my kids to Disney was probably the biggest and most memorable New Thing I did this year. And while Disney wasn’t new to me, it was ‘new to me’ seeing it through the eyes of my kids and for that, it will be my favorite new thing for 2014.

I think over all the experience has made me more aware of how even the little things, like a new chapstick can feel like you did something different, and some days, feeling like you’re getting out of your Groundhog Day routine, a little something can be a big thing.

Kristen:

52 New Things was a sometimes tough but always interesting experience for me. Some weeks, I was scrounging to think of something new to try (and some weeks I just cheated like the week Scandal started back and I was too distracted to find a new thing.) But other weeks the project pushed me to move out of my comfort zone just a little. I’m proud of trying (almost) 52 New things this year and plan to continue seeking out cool experiences in 2015.

Super Bowl Recipe: Loaded Potato Casserole with Buffalo Style Chicken

As you start thinking about what you’ll be serving at your Super Bowl Party, we’re here to help you with you menu. Last week we shared this Sausage Dip appetizer, this week sharing this recipe that’s a little more hearty.

What You’ll Need:

8 Medium Potatoes cubed, not peeled
2 1/2lbs Boneless Skinless Chicken, cubed
1/3 cup of Olive Oil
2 tbsp Ground Pepper
1 1/2 tsp Salt
1 tbsp Paprika
2 tbsp Garlic Powder
7 tbsp Hot Sauce

3 Cups of Mexican Blend Cheese
1 1/2 Cups Bacon (more if you’re a bacon lover, and let’s be honest, who isn’t?)
1 Cup Chopped Green Onion

What You’ll Do:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix olive oil, hot sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Add potatoes and coat with mixture.

Place potato mixture in greased 9 x 13 baking dish, bake uncovered for 55 minutes. Give it stir every 20 minutes or so until cooked through and crispy on the outside.

While your potatoes are in the oven, mix your cubed chicken in the leftover hot sauce and oil mixture, coat as much as possible. You won’t need a lot. Allow chicken to marinate in the fridge while your potatoes cook.

In a mixing bowl, mix together your toppings. Cheese, bacon and green onions.

Once your potatoes are done, pour your marinated chicken (still raw) over the potatoes and top with your cheese, bacon and green onions.

Bake on 400 for 30 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

Once finished serve topped with sour cream, ranch dressing or any other of your favorite loaded potato toppings. Might we suggest more bacon?!

Enjoy, and be first in line, this casserole won’t last long!

On August 28th, 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr delivered what is now known as one of the most popular speeches in history, but how many of you have actually sat down and listened to or watched the entire speech that helped to inspire an entire nation?

Today, while the kids are home, we challenge you to sit down, watch this video and discuss with your children what they have been learning in school about MLK and the importance of the words he spoke on this day.

“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

It’s Not Our Fault if Your Kids are Bored!

We hope you’ve been able to get out an enjoy some of this beautiful weather! It’s been so nice to see the sun! Monday is Martin Luther King Day and you’ll find some special programming at the McWane Science Center and 1/2 price admission to the Birmingham Zoo (with canned food donation) The circus is headed our way later this week and it’s going to be XTREME! Sunday January 18th:

LEGO Brickfair – BJCC Exhibition Hall
LEGO models, displays and winding trains sprawled out over 58,000 square feet. BrickFair brings together adult fans of LEGO from across the USA (and Canada, and a few other countries) to show off their projects, great and small, and to share their passion for LEGO – the most awesome toy – ever. LEGO fan festivals like BrickFair are great fun for the whole family! Join in a game or two – maybe win a LEGO set. Vendors will be offering all things LEGO, including shirts, hats, minifigures, custom-molded weapons, unique models, keychains and… really… everything you never imagined.
At the door: $10
3 and under: Free
Visitors roam BrickFair at their own pace. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes. Tickets are sometimes available for pre-sale and are always limited in quantity. Advance ticket sales will end Thursday, Jan 8th.

MLK Day

Wild About Birds – McWane Science Center
Flap your wings down to McWane Science Center and have a fun day with the Birmingham Audubon Society as we explore the wonderful world of birds. Special presentations, animal displays and hands on educational activities round out this first annual “Wild About Birds” special day at McWane Science Center.
Included in cost of admission to the museum, FREE for members

Itty Bitty Book Club – McWane Science Center
Join” the CLUB!” Sign up your little ones ages 3,4,5, year olds for their own book club!

Bring your child to McWane for 6 weeks from 10:00 am – 11:00 am for a reading adventure! Each week there will be a special book read by a special mystery reader guest. Then you and your child will engage in a fun activity and finally have time to socialize and play with their new friends. This program will be located in our Wonderlab classroom.

Fee for 6 weeks-$25 for members and $40 for non-members. You must preregister for this program.($9 for non members to visit the museum that day.

Admission is not included with the book club fee but if non-members would like to stay and play before/after the book club the special is Free adult with Purchased Child Ticket – does not include IMAX and the usual other disclaimers.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Birmingham Zoo
In the spirit of service this holiday, bring any non-perishable or canned food item and receive half-price admission to the Zoo*. While you’re here, watch a sea lion demonstration, experience a pelican feeding, take a ride on the train and carousel and much more!
