Creative Questions to Get Your Kids Talking

I know, after reading the title of this post, you must be thinking… “My kids don’t have a bit of trouble talking…” But, with all of their talking,  how much do you really know about their day?

Without fail, I pick my kids up from school and the words just tumble out of my mouth.. “Did you have a good Day” The answer is almost always a yes, but what did I actually learn from that question. No matter how hard I try to remember to re-phrase to; “Tell me about your day,” it just never comes out.

A couple of years ago we implemented an “Awesome/Awful” time. Usually around the dinner table, everyone will go around and tell what was the most awesome thing that happened that day and the most awful. It’s a great way to get a conversation started and give you some insight into where you might need to dig a little more.

Here are some other questions that are great conversation starters to help get your kids talking.

1. What’s the funniest thing someone said or did today?

2. How were you a helper today?

3. Describe your perfect day

4. What was your first thought when you woke up today?

5. If you could switch places with one friend for a day, who would it be?

6. What’s the smartest thing you heard someone say today?

7. If you were able to be the teacher for one day, what would you do?

8. Who is someone you would like to be friends with that you aren’t friends with yet?

9. Who in your class makes you smile?

10. How did someone help you today?

What questions could you add to this list?

Sidewalk Film Festival Opening Night – Alabama Theatre
The Raiders
In 1982, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Chris Strompolos, eleven, asked Eric Zala, twelve, a question: “Would you like to help me do a remake Raiders of the Lost Ark? I’m playing Indiana Jones.”

And they did it. Every shot, every line of dialogue, every stunt.

They borrowed and collected costumes, convinced neighborhood kids to wear grass skirts and play natives, cast a fifteen-year-old as Indy’s love interest, rounded up seven thousand snakes (sort of), built the Ark, the Idol, the huge boulder, found a desert in Mississippi, and melted the bad guys’ faces off.

It took seven years. They finished every scene…except one. That would take another 25 years.

American Red Cross Pillow Case Project with McWane Science Center

The Alabama Region of the American Red Cross, in partnership with McWane Science Center, is launching The Pillowcase Project, a national program sponsored by Disney. The Pillowcase Project is offered in schools, after-school programs, summer camps and other youth programs and events to teach third through fifth graders and their families how to prepare for disasters.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Created in New Orleans, The Pillowcase Project was inspired by the story of local university students carrying their belongings in pillowcases during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Through the program, the Red Cross aims to incorporate preparedness education into elementary school and after-school curriculums nationwide.

On August 29, 2015, from 10 am to 4pm, The Pillowcase Project program will be taught at McWane Science Center and visitors to the center will have the opportunity to decorate and personalize their pillowcases during the presentation, and are encouraged to take them home to create a kit. The Red Cross, along with Jefferson County EMA will showcase The Pillowcase Project and provide emergency preparedness awareness to children who participate.

The Pillowcase Project curriculum is structured by three core principles: Learn, Practice and Share. Students will learn about hazards, how to prepare for emergencies, enhance coping skills, practice what they have learned and share their knowledge with friends and family. The program emphasizes the importance of developing an emergency communications plan, fire evacuation plan and emergency contact cards. The program teaches students how to create their own emergency supply kits by packing essential items in a pillowcase for easy transport during an emergency.

“We are thrilled to offer The Pillowcase Project in local schools and after-school programs. The program gives students the opportunity to learn about the science behind various hazards and the importance of preparedness in a fun and interactive way,” said Alicia Anger, Director of Communications and Marketing American Red Cross-Alabama Region. “The hands-on activities
will also help to build confidence so that kids are prepared to take action during an emergency.”

“We are very happy to partner with the Alabama Region of the American Red Cross to bring this

program to our guests at McWane Science Center.  We value the importance this project brings to our children and the long-standing benefits it will give to them,” said Amy Templeton, President and CEO of McWane Science Center.  “We are excited to have this special day for our visitors.”

For more information about The Pillowcase Project, visit the Red Cross website.

Creative Ways to Limit Computer, TV, and Video Game Time

It is amazing that toddlers can operate iPhones, iPads, tablets, and laptops as well as most adults. When it comes to technology, kids are adapting at younger and younger ages.  As kids get older, they may start playing video games. Minecraft, Wii, XBox… there are so many options available. Kids don’t understand how or when to limit themselves, so they’ll need some help from you.

When you notice technology is starting to interfere with family time it’s time to cut it off. When everyone in the house is on their computer, playing video games or watching TV, you aren’t interacting with each other in a quality way. Family game nights are fun, but nothing can take the place of a good face-to-face talk or hearing about your child’s day, with no distractions.

Studies show that children who get too much “screen time” may have shorter attention spans. When your young children already have the attention span of a gnat, this is not a good thing.

Physical Activity in children is important. The more time they sit in front of the television or computer the less time they spend being active. Make sure that they are getting up, out and moving. Encourage outside/creative non technology time daily before allowing them to settle in and play a video game.

Here are a few ways to help set boundaries on your screen time:

1. Timers- the most simple and straightforward way is to set a time allowed for each day and use a timer to signal start and end times.

2. Earning Time- Use small cards to make chore cards. On the front of the cards, put tasks such as “Feed dog” or “Clear table.” On the back of the card, put a time such as 10 min or 15 min. When the child completes the task, they put the card in a jar. As the week goes on, they can pull cards out of the jar and “redeem” them with you for time. Just make sure you don’t create too many cards or they will have too much time available.

3. Create a Priority List. This is what we do at my house. I made a checklist of things that MUST be done before computers or games can be turned on. Our list is in order of importance:
Homework finished
Backpack packed up
Room picked up
Shoes/clothes put away

What methods work for your family?
