DIY Easter Sock Bunnies

I think I have found the cutest Easter craft ever. The great thing about this craft is kids of ALL ages love it. I LOVED it and I am a grown woman. I can’t wait to make more in different sizes and colors. My daughter and I made one that matches her room so she could set it on her dresser, but turns out she actually just carries it around all day. These are so fun to do for a family night, girls night, or even a church youth night activity.

All you need is:

  • Rice
  • Long socks (make sure you get Easter-y colors!)
  • rubber bands
  • scissors
  • paint (white, black, and pink)
  • twine or ribbon
  • small paint brush

Instructions:

  • Pick the color sock you want your bunny to be and start to fill it with rice (stop filling when you have reached the desired size you want your bunny’s body to be).
  • Tie off the body portion with a rubber band.
  • Start filling the sock with rice again but stop when you’ve got the right size head.
  • Tie off the head portion with another rubber band.
  • The rest of the sock that is left will be your bunny’s ears. Take the scissors and cut down the middle to form two halves. Now trim those pieces as desired to make two little ears.
  • Paint your bunny’s whiskers, eyes, nose, and teeth with your small paintbrush.
  • Now give your bunny a nice bow around his neck and ears with the twine or ribbon and you are finished!
  • You can also use felt or a fabric of your choice to hot glue a belly on your bunny, but that it optional.

I’m just going to leave these bunnies out all year long because I don’t think I can make myself take them down!!

Severe Weather Tips for Families

Severe Weather tips for familiesIf you’re from the south, you’re no stranger to severe weather, especially during the spring, but how prepared is your family to deal with a severe weather outbreak?

Here are some things to keep in mind and to have on hand and easily accessible in the event we are directed to our safe place.

First of all.. Have a safe place. Create a family emergency plan and sit down with your family to make sure they know what to do and where to go in the event of a tornado. If you can get underground in a basement go there, if you don’t have a basement take shelter in the lowest possible part of your home in an interior room. Stay away from windows and put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.

Use sturdy tables, bike helmets, and blankets to cover yourself and help protect you from debris.

For families with small babies, utilize your baby carriers. To keep infants safely-contained and leave you with free hands for your other children, use those wraps and strap them to you. Carriers are also a great idea for your child if he or she is still in one of those. Severe weather can scare the tiny humans, and they may not move very quickly. Putting them in the carrier will serve as extra protection and will also keep them easily next to you. Make sure everyone is wearing shoes and grab your wallet or purse.

Prepare ahead of time. It’s best, if you have the space in or near your safe place to stock a box with a few supplies. This way in the event of severe weather, the plan is for everyone to go straight to your safe place. No wandering around the garage looking for the helmet they were using while riding their bike the day before. Have an extra helmet along with a flashlight, batteries, blankets and weather radio. You will need another option for getting those weather updates.

Once you have your plan in place and you’re stocked up… Practice. Practice. Practice. Run through this drill just like the kids do at school for fires and tornadoes. The key to a great safety plan is making sure everyone in the family knows the plan and is ready to follow through, without having to think to much about it.

Does your family have a safety plan in place? Do you have any tips you can share that have worked in past severe weather situations?

Natural Ways to Dye Easter Eggs

We’re all familiar with the store bought egg dye, maybe so familiar that you have flash backs of some seriously stained counter tops and fingers… If you’re looking to mix things up a little bit, try some of these natural ways to color your eggs this year!

Before beginning, make sure to boil all of your eggs, just the same as you would using any other coloring method. Allow to cool. Try the following to create certain colors (or experiment with your own combinations for more fun!):

Yellow: use turmeric. Boil 1 quart water, 1 tablespoon vinegar, and 1 tablespoon salt in a med. pan. Add 5 tablespoons of ground turmeric and stir well (remember this may dye your spoon yellow too!). Simmer until dissolved.

Red: use beets. Chop 1-2 beets into small pieces. Place them into a med. pan and add 1 quart water, 1 tablespoon vinegar, and 1 tablespoon salt. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and use for dyeing.

Green: use spinach. Bring 1 quart of water to a boil. Put about 8 oz. of spinach leaves in the pot of water and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the water begins to turn the desired shade of green. Using frozen spinach will work just as well.

Blue: Use 2 cups of blueberries. Bring 1 quart of water to a boil, add blueberries and simmer for about 10 minutes. Cool and strain the liquid to use for dyeing.

Once all of the liquid has cooled, submerge the eggs into the chosen colors for about 30 minutes, or even a bit longer-depending on how deep of a color you want to achieve.  Remove the eggs and place them on a cooling rack to dry. Once dried, store them in the fridge until they’re ready to be used!

For some fun and easy tips on how to dye eggs with tiny humans, check out this post we did a while back.

Birmingham Barons 2017 Season

The Birmingham Barons are getting ready to kick off their 2017 Season! The Barons continue to top their attendance record from the inaugural season and it’s no surprise when you consider what a fun family night out you can have by attending a game.

Each home game features a fun promotion and the festivities get underway with the opening homestand from April 12th-Sunday April 16th, with all fans receiving 2017 Magnetic Schedules for the first three games (April 12th-April 14th) presented by MINI of Birmingham. Jake the Diamond Dog will also be on hand for opening night to entertain fans, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Make plans to attend the Barons Bash on April 15th to celebrate the first Saturday home game. Railroad Park will host the third annual Barons Bash, with carnival games, inflatables, and rock climbing. Railroad Park’s community celebration will come to a close just before the Barons take to the field at 6:30pm against the Montgomery Biscuits. There will be a small fee for activities.

Natural Remedies for Allergy Relief

Spring has Sprung and while the flowers are pretty and the weather is warming, it can be less than ideal for anyone who suffers from Seasonal Allergies.

Your diet and overall health can play a factor in your allergy suffering. Here are a few things you can implement into your routine that will help and some of them you might have on hand already.

  1. Citrus Drinks: Citrus filled drinks contain plenty of vitamin C, which can provide relief from seasonal allergies. It has the incredible ability to nourish the immune system. When you’re struggling with Allergies, your immune system isn’t functioning correctly, it helps to give it a boost. Try this simple mix:-1/2 lemon
    -2 oranges
-1 tablespoon of local, raw, organic honeySqueeze the juice from the lemon and oranges and chill for several hours. Stir in the honey, add some ice cubes, and drink daily.
  2. Local Honey: The theory is that consuming local honey from where you live will help your body adapt to the allergens in our area. This is supposed to work like a natural allergy “shot” and doesn’t seem to have a downside.
  3. Bee Pollen: If local honey hasn’t worked for you, try bee pollen. The same concept as the honey applies to the bee pollen. Starting in small amounts and gradually increasing the dosage daily will help build up your immunity to the pollen in your area.  Make sure that your pollen is coming from a good source, and free from insecticides. There are 3 forms (granules, capsules, and powder) Bee pollen is crunchy, musty, and very floral – you can simply of the granules or powder over yogurt or oatmeal for breakfast.IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you are not anaphylactic or severely allergic to bees, or so allergic to pollen that you experience anaphylaxis.
  4. Apples and Walnuts: Walnuts are a great snack that you can enjoy to help ease allergy symptoms. They’re high in magnesium, and can help cut down on wheezing or coughing.  while The vitamin E content can boost immunity and protects your body from reacting to allergens. Apples contain quercetin, and naturally reduce the production of histamine.
  5. Quercetin: is a natural bioflavonoid that is said to help stabilize mast cells to keep them from releasing histamine. It is also a potent antioxidant that is said to help reduce inflammation. In addition to being found in Apples, it’s also naturally found in foods like citrus and broccoli. It’s very difficult to consume enough from food to help with allergies but supplements are available. As with any herb, you should check with your doctor before using, especially if you have a liver problem, are pregnant, or are on hormonal contraceptives.

Highlands summer camp offers challenging activities, talented teachers and the great variety that you have come to expect from Highlands School. Camp is open to all students entering Kindergarten through the 8th grade, regardless of the school they attend during the school year. We also offer a couple of options for rising 4K and a new Counselor-in-Training program for rising 7th through 11th grade.

Highlands, offers unique opportunities, some specifically tailored to your child’s age group. All camps indicate the grade the child will be attending in the fall. We strive to offer camps and activities that will enable your child to continue to learn while having a great time! Our camps include active, artistic, academic and just plain fun choices. Be sure to note that we offer morning sessions, some afternoon sessions and some full day camps!

This year most full day camps include hot lunch. As always we have some new camps as well. We also offer Traditional Day Camp in the afternoons for Kindergarten through 6th grade that includes a hot lunch, weekly themes, trips to the pool, outdoor play time, activities and exciting, creative projects. Morning and afternoon camps can be paired for full day care. Please look through the catalog for camp descriptions, ages, costs and dates. Please also note the times each camp begins and ends.
