Here in the DEEP South, super cold winters and frigid temps aren’t the norm, but lately Birmingham has had our share and it’s killing our outdoor play time. Thankfully it’s not a problem that has us locked in our house for months on end like other parks of the Country.
Maybe it’s my southern roots, but it seems that having been born and raised here in this warmer climate, what equals cold to me is laughable to those who are transplants to Birmingham from much colder climates. When it gets into the 40’s here, I’m frigid, miserable and begin the hibernation process. Well, as much as I can with 3 kids who need to go places and get out of the house.
So what is there to do here for Birmingham Moms looking to avoid the frigid weather and wanting to have the kids shake the silly’s out? Here are some ideas for when the playground has become the frozen tundra.
Check out the Indoor Play Places – Urban Air, Surge Trampoline Park, Skyzone, Pump it up, Let’s Play and of course the McWane Science Center. The Science Center has lots to do year round, for all ages, including the IMAX, and BONUS! They have covered parking. They’ll have a new exhibit opening this January, Backyard Adventures.
Let them Climb – Try First Avenue Rocks /Birmingham Boulders for a little rock climbing fun. They even offer an after school Climbing Team program for children ages 8-14. Also, make sure to check out the Kid Zone at Highpoint Climbing and Fitness
Laser Tag – If Laser tag is your game, try Ultra Blast Laser Combat Center off of 280 or Game Zone Laser Tag in Pelham.
Watch some hockey! The Birmingham Bulls are back and you can find them playing at the Pelham Civic Complex through March. They have plenty of promotions running on certain nights throughout the season. For a full schedule visit their site.
Have a Family Bowling Date at Vestavia Bowl or Spare Time Bowling in Trussville.
Treetop Adventure – Kidzone, Animal Trax, Arcade, Bowling and Laser Tag all under one roof!
Trussville Playstation – Roller skating, and arcade.
Skates 280 – Roller skating and arcade
Birmingham Museum of Art – Bart the Art Bat has come up with tons of fun things for kids and adults to do together! Explore, discover, and create art with Bart the Art Bat, the Museum’s fun and funky mascot! For tips on visiting with kids, visit their site.
