Do Dah Day 2018

In 1979, a small group of friends got together and decided to have a party — or so the story goes — and Do Dah Day was born. The following years saw the party grow into an event raising money for local charities such as the Birmingham Zoo, Avondale Library and the Alabama Theatre. With so many Do Dah Day volunteers being pet owners and animal lovers, it was a natural progression for the fundraising focus to turn to local animal charities. Soon Do Dah Day was no longer a party — it had become an all-out festival.

Today, Do Dah Day is Birmingham’s oldest event. A music festival that in its infancy was enjoyed by 200 fun-loving Birmingham citizens, now sees more than 40,000 people from all over the United States converge on Birmingham’s Historic Highland Parks for a day of fun, food and music with their pets. Raising more than $600.00 since 1992 for Jefferson County animal shelters, Do Dah Day is one of the city’s most cherished springtime events.

Do Dah Day has always been — and still is today — a 100% volunteer organization, managed by a board of directors that consists of a diverse and eclectic group of local professionals. The event could not be successful though, without the countless volunteers contributing their time both on the day of the event and, for some, even months before. The event has proven addictive for many of its volunteers, some of whom can tout more than 10 years of volunteering in T-shirt booths and the like. People that once lived in the area and volunteered at the festival now fly in from Chicago or drive from Atlanta – their new homes – to man their posts in beer tents and on the music stages. It’s obvious that without the volunteers and their passion for Do Dah Day and its causes, the event wouldn’t be what it is today.

What began, in the simplest of terms, as an idea, has become a true tradition.

Do Dah Day 2018 will be held on May 19th at Caldwell Park – 11am – 6pm
Parade starts at 11:01 AM along Highland Avenue and Festivities begin at 12:01 PM in the parks!

Ideas for Summer Fun Lists

Last summer we posted this great way to keep up with summer fun. It was our summer bucket list, and it was a huge hit with our family. We even took it a step further and documented our entire summer in a picture book we ordered from one of our favorite photobook websites.

Start now asking your kiddos what they want to do for fun this summer. Roll out a big sheet of Butcher Paper and start making a big to-do list on your paper. We even put little boxes out beside each activity so we could check them off. Kids LOVE this!

Take a picture of your kids with the “before” list, this makes a great first page in your photo book. As you complete the activities, snap pics and keep them in a folder on your computer. When summer comes to an end, take a picture of your kids with their “completed/after” list and use it as your finishing page.

Some variations of this activity could be:

Write all of your To-Do’s on slips of paper and put them in a jar, each day/week/however often, have your child pull an activity from the jar to tell you what fun you’ll be having that day. Once the activity is complete, you can have a second jar marked “Done” working your way through the “To-Do” jar until all of your activities are complete.

Hang up some string and write all of your activities on clothes pins. Put your clothes pins on the string and as you complete your activities, take pictures of your kids and hang the pictures with the corresponding clothes pin.

We found the cute canvas (pictured right) at Hobby Lobby, added some cute ribbon and used our to-do clothes pins on the left and moved them to the right once they were completed.

Combine the 2 above having your child pull a clothes pin from the jar, complete the activity then hang on your line.

The possibilities are endless! Here are a few things on our Summer List, so far. What’s on yours?

Dye our hair pink
Build a Fort
Chalk on the Driveway
Swim
Go to the Aquarium
Pick Strawberries
Go to Steel City Pops
See a Movie
Play in the Sprinkler
Go on a Hike
Eat Cakepops
Make Paper Airplanes
See Taylor Swift
Make Jewelry

Some simple, some not, but get creative and most importantly, have fun!

What’s on your Summer Bucket List?

Dino Days at McWane Science Center

Get ready for a roaring good weekend to celebrate dinosaurs!

Visit the Dinosaurs in Motion exhibit, look for fossils, and dig into hands-on activities and special dinosaur programs.

Meet a Paleontologist! Meet McWane Science Center’s very own paleontologist, Jun Ebersole, on Saturday 1:00 to 3:00 pm and on Sunday, 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Bring a fossil (one only please) to be identified, ask questions, and learn about Alabama’s ancient past.

Other activities include adding scales to our 15 foot dinosaur, competing in Dino challenges, make a fossil imprint to take home and much, much more.

Dino Days – May 19th and 20th during museum hours.

The Dinosaurs in Motion Exhibit opens May 13th and runs until September 3rd.

Dinosaurs in Motion engages and educates the visitor using magnificent, fully interactive, life-size metal dinosaur sculptures created by North Carolina artist John Payne. An amazing blend of science, art and innovation, these life-sized metal sculptures will captivate visitors while their exposed mechanics illustrate science and technology principles in a fun and engaging way.

Payne’s dinosaur sculptures also weave the principles of kinetics, biomechanics and robotics in their exposed mechanics and movable features. Visitors have the unique ability to manipulate the dinosaurs via lever and pulley systems, as well as with remote controls, offering large-scale dinosaur interaction unprecedented in a museum setting. Principles of innovation, observation and experimentation are also encouraged throughout the exhibition and are reinforced as the visitor takes on the roll of an “apprentice” in Payne’s studio.

What Drowning Really Looks Like

May is water Safety Month and as we transition from school to summer, we begin to plan for fun times with the kids. Swimming typically tops the list, but with swimming comes the threat of drowning.  350 children under the age of five drown in pools each year nationwide. Among unintentional injuries, drowning is the second leading cause of death to ages 5 and under after motor vehicle accidents. In some Sunbelt states such as California, Florida and Arizona, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children under five.

What’s more disturbing is that around 50% of those drownings will happen within 25 yards of a parent or adult. In 10% of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child drown and have no idea that’s what is happening. What’s the reason?  We don’t know what drowning really looks like, only what we see on tv.

What should we be looking for?

  • Head low in the water, mouth at water level
  • Head tilted back with mouth open
  • Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
  • Eyes closed
  • Hair over forehead or eyes
  • Not using legs – Vertical
  • Hyperventilating or gasping
  • Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
  • Trying to roll over on the back
  • Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder.

What we have seen on tv- the thrashing and yelling- is NOT what drowning looks like.  They may just look like they are treading water. You can be sure by simply asking them, “Are you alright?” If they can answer at all – they probably are alright. If they don’t reply, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And as parents we know that kids make noise when they’re in the water. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why.

Some more facts about the Instinctive Drowning Response:

1. Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. Until a person can breathe, they can’t speak.

2. Drowning people’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water.

3. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water, permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

4. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements.

5. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.

Toddler-Friendly Restaurants in Birmingham

We are so excited to be teaming up with Heather from My Life Well Loved for a fun Blog Swap. While my kids aren’t in the Toddler phase anymore, I remember very well how difficult getting a good meal out could be. Heather is breaking it down for us with this list of Local Restaurants that are Toddler-Friendly. (Meaning they won’t throw you out should a meltdown happen or if a little bit of macaroni were to go flying across the restaurant.)

If you’re looking for ideas for keeping the kids busy on rainy days or ideas for beating the summer heat, check out our guest post for the best indoor activities for kids!

Heather is a Birmingham native who grew up in Homewood, went to Samford University and met and married her college sweetheart there. She runs the popular healthy life+style blog MyLifeWellLoved.com, teaches Pure Barre and loves to lead an active lifestyle with her family. She has a 2.5 year old little boy and is 23 weeks pregnant with their second boy. You can typically find Eric, Heather and Leyton on the weekends going on family walks, at church and enjoying local eats with friends.

Eating out as an adult with a toddler is certainly a much different scenario than eating out around town as a Samford college student. Back then, I wanted to be at the hippest and most fun places although 10 years ago that was pretty limited compared to Birmingham now!

Let’s take an aside to revel in the glory that is the city of Birmingham and all that she has to offer now. Breweries, multiple walking/running/biking trails, new non-chain restaurants popping up all the time, Railroad park  and many others… as a Birmingham native in her early 30’s I can’t believe how far our city has come! Go B’ham, go B’ham!

I have a 2.5 year old little boy and am currently 23 weeks pregnant so EASY places to eat out with a toddler are the name of my mom game these days. Here’s our top picks for Birmingham toddler-friendly restaurants:

Bar Taco: We LOVE Bar Taco! You can sit inside or outside, your kids can run around on the outside patio, they are always super friendly and mama can get a margarita. Can I get an amen?

Zoe’s Kitchen: We love the SOHO location especially because you can sit out on their patio with the large umbrellas and have a little enclosed outdoor area for your kids to run around in. Bonus? If Leyton is good for the meal, he gets one of their GINORMOUS chocolate chip cookies that make all my pregnancy dreams come true.

Nabeel’s: I have taken Leyton here with couple friends, with girlfriends and their kids, and gotten take out from here to take to friends who have just had kids. It’s an excellent option to sit on their side patio and enjoy the outdoors plus then with that little tucked away patio, you aren’t bothering the rest of their guests. Insider tip: If you’ve never tried the Feta Theologos app, it’s mouth-wateringly good! My sister-in-law requests we go to Nabeel’s each time just to get it!

Urban Cookhouse: This fast casual American fare restaurant tucked in the heart of downtown Homewood is loud, bustling and no one will notice if your kid has a meltdown. They have healthy options, a yummy kids menu and they go above and beyond to show that they “get the kid thing” by having little cups of Cheerios ready for you to give to your hungry munchkins.

Brixx Pizza: Eric and I have fallen in love with the laid back vibe, the beer draft selection, drink specials, and the Brixx salad with extra goat cheese and salmon. Seriously, it’s so good! The crazy part? You can request pizza dough for your child to play with while you wait! AND they have chalkboard walls kids can draw on, so fun!

Ashley Mac’s: Leyton and I are pretty regular luncher’s at Ashley Mac’s with girlfriends. We love how the founder has really implemented mom-friendly thoughts into her store from the easy takeaway meals to the cute kids’ toy pliable sticks that come with kids’ meals. We enjoy sitting outside where Leyton can run around!

Jim ‘N Nicks: A Birmingham staple, cheese biscuits and a boisterous atmosphere make for the perfect scenario for no one to care about toddler holler

Vecchia: I have learned recently that I’m doing Vecchia all wrong. I usually get the lasagna roll up’s and their wine ON TAP – yes, you read that right! – but lately I hear that the panini’s are where it’s at. We come to Vecchia for the beautiful big wrap-around porch, the scenic views and the ability to walk around and take in Moss Rock Preserve. On Saturday’s they have a bounce house to entertain kids and chalk available for drawing all the time.

Post Office Pies: One of our very favorite things to do with other couples who have young kids is grab Post Office Pies (one of my favorite local pizza joints) and head over to sit outside and have drinks and playtime at Avondale Brewery where you can play bags, kick around a soccer ball, take in the pooch watching or just let your toddler run wild. It’s truly a spring time staple!

Beef O’Brady’s: Kids eat free on Thursday nights with a paying adult and they often have kids’ activities this night as well. It’s low key, you can have a fun night out with your family and nobody is bothered by kids running around.

Although we all know that you can pretty much hit up any Mexican restaurant in Birmingham, I wanted to think a bit outside the box for places to recommend that are toddler-friendly in their vibes and that also have good stuff to offer for adults.

This list also has several options that include healthy food choices if that is important to you like it is to me…well, at least when I don’t have a pregnancy craving hit, ha!

What did I leave off the list? I’d love to hear your favorite toddler-friendly restaurants to hit up in the comments below or feel free to let me know on Instagram under @MyLifeWellLoved!
