Expert warns about dangers of carbon monoxide during the winter

With temperatures in Alabama falling below freezing this week, a poison control expert at Children’s of Alabama wants to remind people about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. She says it can happen during the winter when people heat their homes in unsafe ways.

According to Ann Slattery, director of the Alabama Poison Information Center (APIC) at Children’s, the APIC received 144 calls about carbon monoxide exposures and poisonings in 2021, including 36 in the final three months of the year. Slattery said the APIC saw a spike in calls during a cold stretch in November, and with temperatures falling again, she knows some people may use risky heating methods.

“If there’s a power outage, they’re going to look for alternative ways to keep warm,” she said. “They may build fires, they may bring in their grills into their homes to try to help get some heat, that type of thing.”

Heating your car also can be risky if not done safely. Slattery says carbon monoxide from the exhaust can enter your home even if you leave your garage door open while the car is warming. She recommends taking the car out of the garage or out from underneath the carport before heating it.

Gas stoves, pilot lights and kerosene heaters are other sources of carbon monoxide that can lead to poisoning if not used properly.

“Carbon monoxide can come into your home without there being smoke or a fire, so you would want to be able to catch it, be able to detect it,” she said.

That’s why Slattery recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

“We recommend that you have one on every floor of your home,” she said. “We recommend that you have one in the hallway or outside of bedrooms so they will awaken you.”

Placement of the detector is important. Carbon monoxide doesn’t rise the way smoke does, so you can put it at any height. But Slattery recommends placing it 15 feet from a garage door, gas stove, fireplace or kerosene heater. Anything closer, and the detector could go off regularly.

Even if you have a carbon monoxide detector, you can take other measures to keep your family safe. With pilot lights, for example, you can check the color. If it’s blue, you’re safe. If more than the tip of the flame is yellow, then it could be a carbon monoxide risk.

If you have questions about carbon monoxide exposure, you can call the APIC at 1-800-222-1222. If you believe you or a family member are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning (symptoms can include headache, dizziness and nausea), you should go to the nearest emergency department.

How to Organize Toys After the Holidays

We all love that Christmas morning magic, the joy on our kids faces as they see all of the new things that Santa brings or the toys they have to unwrap from Mom, Dad or Grandparents, but once the wrapping paper and boxes are gone we’re left with piles of new toys and games that need a home somewhere in our home and if you’re anything like us, you’re probably already busting at the seams, so what do we do with all of that new merch? Here are some ideas on making some space:

First of all…. PURGE:

I know, I know.. Easier said than done, right? But seriously, if you start with toys or puzzles that are broken or missing pieces you might be surprised at how much you can quickly clean out. Then think about things that your kids have outgrown that they no longer play with that tend to just get pushed to the back of the shelf or closet, I promise this will be a great starting point.

Rotate:

If you simply don’t have space in your kids room or playroom from all of the old and new, but getting rid of things isn’t an option, grab some plastic bins and pack up some of the older toys and store them in the attic or garage and simply rotate them out after a few months.

Add Shelving:

If you can, utilize wall space to add shelving to store UP. Add some bins to help organize things like legos or use the shelves for board games.

Remove Furniture:

Don’t be afraid to make the space work for how you need it right now, as your kids get older, their toys get smaller, if you need to remove larger furniture and add it back later just remember it’s only temporary.

What To Do Now If You Want To Buy In 2022

If you are planning to buy in 2022, now is the time to start preparing. Whether you are 3 months out or a year out, you can begin getting things in place for purchasing your new home. Here are some things to think about:

  1. Your Credit Score. Your credit score will play a huge role in how much you can afford when it comes to purchasing a home. While you can’t improve your credit score overnight, there are somethings that you can do to increase it (or at least make sure it does not decrease) in the coming months. Make sure that all your current credit bills are paid on time. Refrain from any large purchase on credit. Keep your current credit card balances as low as possible.
  2. When saving to purchase your new home, there are a few things to consider outside of just the down payment. Usually, you will have the cost of the inspection, the appraisal, closing costs, and repair and maintenance costs. We suggest saving for the following: 5% – 20% of the purchase price for your down payment, 2% of the purchase price for closing costs, at least $1,000 for the inspection and the appraisal, and at least $2,500 in savings for potential repair and maintenance costs.
  3. Get your Financial Documents in Order. Lenders require more documentation than they used to, so it is something we always suggest getting in order before applying. The documents a lender will require vary depending on the situation, but the following are a good rule of thumb.
  • Tax returns
  • Pay stubs, W-2s, or other proof of income
  • Bank statements and other assets
  • Credit history
  • Gift letters, if using funds that were gifted
  • Photo ID
  • Rental history, if you don’t already own a home
  • No Big Purchases.  During the loan process, your lender is going to be looking at your Debit to Income as well as funds that you have on hand to pay for the down payment, closing costs, and future payments. Big purchases can affect these numbers because 1) if they are bought using credit, your Debit to Income with change and 2) if they are bought with cash, your fund on hand will be affect. It is wise when purchasing a home to hold off on large purchases like new furniture, a new tv, or a car until after you have bought your new home.

Your Job.  In regards to your loan, your lender is going to look at your ability to pay back the loan. They want to see stability in your job, usually requiring tax returns for two years. If you are looking to buy in the near future, you don’t want to be looking for and starting a new job at the same time. However, an exception is usually if it is a job in the same field or a promotion.
