52 New Things. The Wrap Up.

I know it’s cliche’ to say “How time flies” and “Where did this year go” but I just have to say, I cannot believe that we have come to the end of this project that we started 1 whole year ago!

I don’t know what I expected when we started it, I think I was hoping that my life was a little more exciting than new chapsticks and failed recipes but alas, it’s not, this is my life. No sky diving, bungee jumping or tattoos.

What this project taught me is that it doesn’t always have to be something big and grand to get me excited, sometimes it’s just the simplicity of a new broom, mop or hair product that makes me happy.  Whoever said “It’s the little things in life…” couldn’t have been more right.

Without further ado… Our final New Thing for 2010!

Angie:

I unplugged. Something I never do, but over the holidays I almost completely unplugged from my normal world of internet and social media. I put my computer away on Christmas Eve and didn’t get it out again for 3 days. I had my phone (addiction) so I checked things periodically until it died but I didn’t bother to charge it again until the next day. It may not seem “unplugged” to a lot of people but for me it was a huge step, and it felt good to be disconnected in that way for a while.

Trish –

My new thing this week is after Christmas shopping. I avoid high traffic shopping at all costs, but my decorations are raggedy and in dire need of replacement.

We hope you found time to try some new things over this past year, if you did, we would love to hear the best, most favorite thing you did or tried!

Save Now, Ease Stress Later

The holidays are over, our houses are full and our wallets are empty. We came up with a few little things you can do starting now that will help ease the financial burden that can come with the holiday season in 2011. If you start some of these ASAP, you will notice a huge difference in 12 months.

1. Shop now for next year. If your ornaments and decorations are looking a little ragged, now is the time to stock up with most stores offering discounts of at least 50%

2. Wrapping paper is also on sale but something we did this year was homemade wrapping paper. Kraft paper rolls are a staple in my house, like bread and peanut butter.  My girls love to color and when the weather is cold or rainy we roll out a long sheet and go to town, when we finish one side we flip it over and start again. The finished product is of course beautiful, but HUGE. If I could save and display everything I would but who has the space? Throwing out these sheets seemed like a waste, so we started saving them and used them as wrapping paper for our Christmas Gifts. It’s a personal touch, it saves money and is a great way to recycle.

3. Have you heard of Swagbucks yet? It’s a toolbar you install and use for searching, and you earn “swagbucks” that you can cash in for gifts. I started saving mine, (kind of late in the game) but by the time I was ready to shop for Christmas, I had $30 in Amazon Gifts cards, for doing nothing but using their toolbar and occasionally snagging a code they put on their blog, Facebook or Twitter.

I decided to get an early start for next year and have $5 already. Think about letting that ecru for 12 months, I’m shooting for $100+ this year. There are several ways to earn them so it’s definitely something to check out.

4. A lot of banks have a Christmas Club. By becoming a member of this club, your bank will transfer a desired amount out of your checking account into a Christmas Fund Account. Then around October to November most banks will either send you a check in the mail for this amount or they will deposit the amount that you saved into your checking account. $25 a month you probably won’t miss, but it could be a nice little “one lump sum” to get you started next year.

5. Ebay/Craigslist/Yard Sale/Consignment –  With all of the new items that have entered your house this holiday season it’s probably time to clean out some of the old forgotten or outgrown items. Start selling those off and saving the money in a special account or jar. This will only require will power to not spend that cash as soon as it hits your hot little hand.

Are you saving now for next year? What tips do you practice throughout the year to help ease the stress when the holidays hit?

Medical Minute: Infertility

I think we all know someone who has battled infertility.  It is especially hard if you don’t understand the causes.  Even if you haven’t personally dealt with infertility, your friends who have will appreciate you having some background knowledge.

Infertility means a couple has not been able to get pregnant after one year of trying.  It also may refer to situations when a woman is 35 or older and has not been able to get pregnant after six months or if she has not been able to carry a pregnancy to term. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 10 percent, or 6.1 million women, in the United States between the ages of 15 and 44 have problems getting or staying pregnant. But infertility is not just a problem for women. Men can be infertile too. About one-third of infertility problems can be traced to the woman, about one-third to the man, and the rest of the time it is because of either both partners or for no known reason.

There are many reasons why a couple may be infertile. In women, the most common causes include damage or blockage to the fallopian tube (which transports the egg from the ovary to the uterus), endometriosis (when cells lining the uterus grow in other areas of the body), ovulation disorders, elevated prolactin, polycystic ovary syndrome, early menopause, benign uterine fibroids and pelvic adhesions.

Causes of male infertility are commonly associated with problems with the sperm, including impaired shape and movement of sperm, low concentrations of sperm, varicocele (varicose vein in the scrotum), undescended testicle, testosterone deficiency, infections, or genetic defects. Men also may experience problems with the delivery of sperm, such as retrograde ejaculation (semen goes into the bladder), not having any semen, blockage of the ejaculatory ducts, misplaced urinary opening or anti-sperm antibodies.

Both men and women have many of the same risk factors that can contribute to infertility, including age, stress, tobacco smoking, alcohol or drug use, certain medications, environmental toxins, and genetic conditions. Physicians first will check a man’s sperm while a woman is tested to see if her ovaries are working properly. Both partners will undergo a general physical examination and review of their medical histories, including illnesses, medications and sexual habits. Treatment will depend on the cause, time infertile, age of the couple and their personal preferences.

While some causes of infertility cannot be corrected, a woman may still be able to become pregnant by taking fertility drugs to regulate or induce ovulation. Surgery also may be an option if there are blockages or other problems in the fallopian tubes. For men, surgery, hormones, or sometimes assisted reproductive technology (ART) could correct a lack of sperm. The most common form of ART is in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF involves retrieving mature eggs from the woman, fertilizing them with sperm in a dish in a laboratory, and then implanting the embryos in the uterus.

Dealing with infertility can be stressful and time-consuming. Fortunately, there are many safe and effective ways to overcome infertility and approximately two-thirds of couples go on have babies. For more information about infertility, talk with your doctor or visit the American Society for Reproductive Medicine website at www.asrm.org.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town… Track His Every Move.

I remember when I was a kid turning on the late news on Christmas Eve and watching the make shift Santa Tracker they had set up. Something that resembled some blinky clip art and a good ole map. But oh how times have changed with the help of time, technology and a little thing called “Google.”

Starting tomorrow the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will start tracking Santa’s journey from his home at the North Pole to houses all across the world, something they have been doing since 1955,

According to the NORAD Website here is how they track Santa:

NORAD uses four high-tech systems to track Santa – radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets.

Tracking Santa starts with the NORAD radar system called the North Warning System. This powerful radar system consists of 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America. On December 24th, NORAD monitors the radar systems continuously for indications that Santa Claus has left the North Pole.

The moment that radar indicates Santa has lifted off, we use our second detection system. Satellites positioned in geo-synchronous orbit at 22,300 miles from the Earth’s surface are equipped with infrared sensors, which enable them to detect heat. Amazingly, Rudolph’s bright red nose gives off an infrared signature, which allows our satellites to detect Rudolph and Santa.

The third tracking system is the Santa Cam network. We began using it in 1998, which is the year we put our Santa Tracking program on the internet. Santa Cams are ultra-cool, high-tech, high-speed digital cameras that are pre-positioned at many locations around the world. NORAD only uses these cameras once a year. The cameras capture images and videos of Santa and his reindeer as they make their journey around the world.

The fourth system is made up of fighter jets. Canadian NORAD fighter pilots flying the CF-18 intercept and welcome Santa to North America. In the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or the F-16 get the thrill of flying alongside Santa and his famous reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and, of course, Rudolph.

So, to join in on the fun and even track him from your mobile phone if you won’t be home tomorrow night, visit their website. You can also track Santa in Google Earth – We’ve come a long way since my youth!

Every Little Bottom Diaper Drive!

BirminghamMommy.com is partnering with Huggies Diapers to collect 5,000 diapers to benefit a local charity, The Lovelady Center. This diaper drive will run from December 1st through December 31st with local drop off sites located around Birmingham. New packages of diapers may be donated, as well as opened, unused individual diapers, pull-ups, and swim diapers. Please make sure that broken packs are still in a wrapper or individual diapers are put into ziplock bags.

“Every Little Bottom” is a national campaign to bring awareness to the very real need of diapers for many families. ELB was created because 1 in 3 American families struggle to provide diapers for their children. This is called diaper need, and there’s very little help or public resources for it. Food assistance programs focus only on food and nutrition and do not cover diapers. Being a mom is tough; not having the basic necessities for your baby only makes it more stressful for those struggling to make ends meet. Some moms are in such need that they miss work due to not having diapers for daycare.

BirminghamMommy.com  was looking for a way to give back, and found the perfect recipient in The Lovelady Center. We think it’s really important to support a local program like TLC that is helping women and children, it betters our community and sets a good example for our children. This is a great way to let your kids help perform community service and to also begin discussing serious issues that exist in our community.

The Lovelady Center is a 9 to 12 month program designed to restore hope and rebuild lives. TLC provides housing, meals, transportation, counseling and many more opportunities to 350 women and children every day. Nearly 40% of the women at TLC are homeless, escaping domestic violence, drug abuse, or simply have nowhere else to turn. The Lovelady Center is currently at an all time high with over 450 women and children they are supporting. Now is the time to help!

We currently have drop boxes in the following locations, we hope you will take the time to stop by while you’re out and make a donation.

Learning Express
Cahaba Heights – 3132 Heights Village, Vestavia
Riverchase Galleria – 2000 Riverchase Galleria, Hoover
Patton Creek Shopping Center – 180 Main Street, Hoover

Grandmothers Joy
Located at 81 Chruch Street, Mountain Brook
Bring in a new, unopened pack of diapers to be donated to The Lovelady Center and receive 10% off your purchase! ( Valid the whole month of December, but not valid on sale items!

Taylor Bug’s Kids Boutique and Consignment
Located at 1355 Hueytown Road, Suite 101, Hueytown

Do It Yourself Crafts
Located at 1909 Oxmoor Road, Homewood

We will be adding a few more drop spots in the coming days.

If your office, church group, moms group etc. would like to participate, please let us know and we can make arrangements to help collect!

A HUGE thank you to Two Men and a Truck for donating our boxes! And thanks to everyone in advance, we know this is going to be a huge success!!

52 New Things

With the craziness of the season we have just completely slipped up on journal-ing our New Things – I think we left off on week 46 so we’re going to try and catch up in no particular order…..

Angie –

2 of my New Things have involved the movies.

My 5 year old was invited to a party at the movies that just so happened to be a drop off party… Every parent’s dream right? Well, I was pretty much a nervous wreck. It’s one thing to leave them at someones house but the big bad movie theater was a wholly different thing. I had the twins with me so I knew I couldn’t change my mind and stay so after milling around in the lobby forever I finally left her. It took a lot for me to walk out and leave my baby, but I did and of course everything was fine.

Over the past week my husband has been taking some random days off so we decided to try our luck at taking the twins to a movie for the first time ever. They did great, they absolutely loved it… I learned two things while on this adventure: 1. that even thought they loved it, it’s still very much a 2 person job to take all 3 of mine at the same time. And 2. a family of 5 can put away a big bucket of popcorn before the movie even starts!

I tried some more new chapstick.. Not on purpose, I absentmindedly picked up the wrong kind, spearmint flavor – I actually like it.

I tried a new recipe for fried rice. I’ve been obsessed with it lately. This new recipe called for vermacelli which I thought was odd but I tried it anyway. In the end it was a good dish of vegetables and rice but in no way resembled “Fried Rice”

I tried a “Caramel Brulee Latte” from Starbucks. I’m not a coffee fan at all. I don’t like the taste or the smell but this? I like! If I could pull myself away from the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate it might be my new winter drink.

Trish –

I tried a new recipe.  It was pineapple cake and it was nothing special at all.  I love pineapple and cake, but the combo didn’t come out the way it should’ve.

I am now using a bounce laundry bar. I love it! Works great and appears to last for a while.
One week was coupon only items. I have a list of things I refuse to buy if not on sale or with a coupon. Mostly it’s non-necessity stuff like cereal and soft drinks.

My new thing this week is buying all meats in bulk. It better save me money and not go bad in my freezer!

Come back and check out next week as we wrap up this year of 52 New Things!
