McWane Science Center:

IMAX
McWane Science Center’s IMAX® Dome Theater puts you in the center of the action by projecting breathtaking quality images onto the 5-story-tall dome screen and delivering intense surround sound through almost 3 tons of speakers and subwoofers.
Now Showing: Flight of the Butterflies, Titans of the Ice Age

Unearthing Alabama’s Ice Age – through December 31st, 2013
McWane Science Center is home to Alabama’s second largest natural history collection. Made up of over 500,000 specimens and objects pertaining to the natural history of the state, this important collection focuses on the preservation, education, and research of Alabama’s rich biodiversity and paleobiodiversity. One of the more significant subsets of the collection is Alabama’s largest collection of Late Pleistocene faunal remains – or Ice Age fossils.

Made up of nearly 10,000 cataloged specimens, the McWSC Pleistocene collection contains a unique diversity of fauna that not only includes those native to North America, but migrants to the state from both South America and the Old World. This collection includes mammals, both extant and extinct, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fishes, and botanical remains collected from both cave and stream localities in the state. Extinct mammals represented in the McWSC collection include mammoths, mastodons, giant beavers, saber-toothed cats, giant armadillos, tapirs, peccaries, and giant ground sloths.

This spring, visitors will have an opportunity to view some of the fossils in the collection with a new exhibit titled — “Unearthing Alabama’s Ice Age.” This exhibit will not only highlight many of the Ice Age animals from the McWane Science Center Collection, but will highlight and dispel many of the common misconceptions surrounding the Ice Age in the state. The goal is for visitors to have a better understanding and appreciation for this time in Alabama. For example, guests might learn that Alabama was on average only five degrees colder than today, glaciers did not reach farther south than southern Illinois or that all the Ice Age animals did not go extinct at the end of the Ice Age. While the largest animals, such as mastodons, giant ground sloths, and saber-tooth cats died out, nearly all the animals that are living in Alabama today were also around in the Ice Age.

The Unearthing Alabama’s Ice Age Alabama display is located in the City Gallery on Level 2 of the museum. It is included in the cost of admission to the museum and free to members.

Santa's favorite cookie recipes!

I, like Santa, am a bit of a cookie connoisseur. My trusted favorite is a traditional chocolate chip cookie, but oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are a close second. If you’re looking for some tried and true recipes to make for the jolly man this year, try one of these:

Salted Caramel Thumbprints (from Food.com)

1 (17 1/2 ounce) package Sugar Cookie Mix
2 tablespoons  All Purpose Flour
1/2 c butter, softened
1 egg
2 egg whites, beaten until foamy
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 1/2 cups finely chopped pecans
2/3 cup Caramel Flavored Topping
1 1/4 teaspoons coarse sea salt

Directions:

HEAT oven to 350°F

  1. Mix cookie mix, flour, softened butter, egg and almond extract in medium bowl. Mix with spoon until soft dough is formed.
  2. Use a level measuring teaspoon of dough to make 3/4-inch balls. Dip into egg whites, then roll in pecans. Place on prepared cookie sheet. Make a rounded indentation in the center of each cookie.
  3. Bake 10 minutes. Remake rounded indentation in cookie. Fill with scant 1/2 teaspoon caramel topping. Bake an additional 2 minutes or until lightly browned. Sprinkle caramel with a pinch of coarse salt. Cool on cookie sheet 5 minutes. Transfer to wire rack. Cool completely.

The Holidays at the McWane Science Center

As you may have noticed, we love the McWane Science Center but the holidays are probably our most favorite time to go. So many fun things to do and see.

Open now, as we’ve mentioned before is the Magic of Model Trains. Your family can discover trains of every shape and size inside this popular exhibit which features over a dozen different train displays.

Every set in the exhibit is designed to scale with the size of the trains. The meticulous detail of the scenery including covered bridges, downtown storefronts and of course, several train stations will keep you entertained for hours!

Open since November 29th, is the Winter Wonderland. Take your family to the most magical place around this holiday season.  Laughter is in the air as children coast down the Ice Slide and take a whirl across the room on the extended zip line. Climb aboard the McWane Train and go for a ride or try your luck at ice fishing.

The cost of these exhibits are included in the cost of admission to the museum, FREE for members.

We hope you can enjoy some of your holiday break at McWane!

Giveaways to Giftaway – Rodan + Fields Macro Exfoliator

Get Glowing!

Autumn slips into our lives seemingly unnoticed most years. Mainly because school is back in session, and we moms are running full speed! Still, it embraces us with it’s glorious, rich colors, cooler temperatures, cobalt blue skies, and football of course!

However, when autumn gives way to winter with even lower temperatures and colder, dryer winds. These elements can be considered a “winter assault” on your skin. Add to that the indoor heat we love to turn up, and your skin is even more parched.

What to do? Here are a couple of hints for you to declare an “anti-aging assault” on the harsh winter elements and reclaim your GLOW.

EXFOLIATE! Out with the old dead, dull cells and in with the new!

And boy did we find the best of the best in at home exfoliation! The REDEFINE MACRO Exfoliator totally ups the ante from any at home exfoliating tool available today.  It was the creation of Doctors Rodan+Fields (of Proactiv fame) for their skin care line, Rodan+Fields Dermatologists.

How it works: The patent-pending MACRO Exfoliator takes away a week’s worth of dead, dulling skin cells and the gentle suction sweeps them away.

How often:
Use once weekly for 5 minutes to rid yourself of 5 million dead skin cells, leaving behind smoother, more luminous skin!

Secondly…
MOISTURIZE! Nourish your skin with rich moisturizers to keep the drying and cracking at bay.

We love Rodan+Fields REDEFINE Regimen for replenishing moisture and for being loaded with anti-aging ingredients like peptides, which aid in the building of collagen. REDEFINE is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of lines, pores, & loss of firmness.

From the Daily Cleansing Mask to the overnight & daytime creams, your skin will drink in the nourishing ingredients.
When used in conjunction with your MACRO Exfoliator, the results are astonishing and very satisfying!  Many people say this combination truly helps their skin to have a glowing appearance.

To tackle dry, flaky skin on the rest of your body, try Rodan+Fields ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer. It features RF-Dcell technology to calm frenzied cells. Your result will be skin that is able to retain moisture and remain comfortable when challenged by climate & and other environmental aggressors.

Finally…
Always, always use sunscreen!!!

It’s time to Glow again ladies!

Giveaways to Giftaway! Go Auburn, Go! or Roll Tide, Roll! Children's Books

Our giveaways to giftaway series is back!! And since our state has been in a football frenzy this past weekend and we have 1 team headed to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta, we thought we would kick it off with these adorable children’s books, compliments of Collegiate Kids Books.

About Collegiate Kids Books:
“At first I couldn’t decide,” says Jones, who along with Bowman created the Collegiate Kids Books Series of interactive kids books (www.collegiatekidsbooks.com). “Were we writing these books for kids or for parents? But over the past few years as the series has taken off, I’ve come to realize that the answer is both.

“Kids love the books because they’re fun and engaging,” he explains. “Parents love them because they’re a great way to pass along college team propaganda. And the books take on a life of their own because they open the door to all kinds of great things like reading time, watching games on TV, and going to games. As gifts, they really are a win/win.”

Author Jones and illustrator Bowman (who happened to be college roommates at NC State University) designed their books with moveable parts, textured materials, and scratch and sniff experiences for maximum kid appeal. Each book follows its respective school mascot around campus, where it encounters familiar sites and landmarks.

To learn more and to purchase online, visit http://www.collegiatekidsbooks.com/. Save 20% with coupon code T58W70440U3!

They are absolutely adorable books and my kids have loved our copy. You’re going to want to add this to your stocking stuffer list, for sure!

Up for grabs we have 1 signed copy of Go Auburn, Go! and 1 signed copy of Roll Tide, Roll!

To enter:

Leave a comment here on this post declaring your allegiance to your team. We will choose 1 winner for Auburn and 1 winner for Alabama.

  • You may enter once for each book, just in case you are trying to win this as a gift. (Although we personally couldn’t understand trying to indoctrinate the opposing team..)
  • For an additional entry, head over to their Facebook page and tell them thank you for the giveaway.

Giveaway will end at 6pm on Wednesday, December 4th. Winners will be notified via email and announced on our Facebook page.

Tips for a Less Stressful Thanksgiving

Hosting Thanksgiving this year? I hate to break it to you, but no matter how much you plan, if your household is anything like mine, you will have half naked tiny humans running around refusing to wear their designated “Thanksgiving Attire,” as your guests arrive 45 minutes early, to a hectic kitchen, a burned casserole (or two) and a husband rushing around the yard trying to finish blowing the leaves so Uncle Fred can find the driveway.

Here are a few tips to help make your Thanksgiving Morning run a little more smoothly.

1. Prep the day before.  Anything from clothes for the tiny humans to food. Make sure outfits are clean and laid out. Let the kiddos know before they go to bed that their clothes are laid out and to get up and get dressed just like they would on a school day. For food: Items such as potatoes, vegetables, and casseroles, as well as some desserts, can be made the day before. If you leave it all to the day of your big feast you’re setting yourself up for a very stressful morning.

Speaking of stress…

2. Don’t stress your kids out. You stressing out, will stress them out, leading to epic meltdowns and puddles of children on your kitchen floor. Remember to keep your expectations of them in check. You’ve dressed them up, you’re asking them to interact with adults, a lot of them they see only a couple of times a year, and you’re expecting them to eat foods they probably never see except at the Thanksgiving or Christmas table. Assign the most laid back family member you have to them and let them play until dinner is served. Have a couple of board games, crafts and snacks set out to keep them entertained and most of all out of your kitchen.

3. Don’t be a Hero. Don’t be afraid of the word “Potluck.” Potluck is your friend. Keeping your kids alive and cleaning your house is chore enough without the added pressure of doing all of the cooking yourself. In our family everyone has a signature dish and that’s what they bring. It’s almost a requirement.

4. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember Thanksgiving is about being Thankful for what we have, and for spending time with our family. If you didn’t have time to iron the table cloth (or even find it.) No biggie, chances are no one is going to notice anyway.

5. Know your Boundaries. Don’t be afraid to say no to taking on any extra tasks, on or around Thanksgiving and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Keep Aunt Sally busy with setting the table, the kids with decorations and if cleaning is stressing you out, spend the extra bucks to have someone come clean for you. It will be well worth the money to keep your sanity in check.

In the end, it doesn’t matter if you forgot the pecan pie, or if the dishes all matched. It’s about spending the day with family and friends and being thankful for them.

What tips do you have for keeping your day on track and as stress free as possible?
