52 New Things, 2014. Week 19

French Toast, Dancing and Sewing.. It was a very well rounded week for new things here at BirminghamMommy.

What did you do that was new?

Kristen –
My new thing was taking the baby to Kindermusik class this week. She mostly just walked around but it was fun to watch her enjoy the music. Besides, doing the Kindermusik now will turn her into a violin virtuoso when she’s older, right?

Angie-
This week I attempted to make homemade whipped cream and french toast. When we went to Atlanta for our Aquarium trip we stayed in a hotel that served the most AMAZING french toast I’ve ever had. It quickly became a favorite with one of the twinlets whose talked about it a lot since then. So, I searched the web and settled on this recipe for the toast, and whipped up some heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla to go on top. All was tasty. So very tasty. Put this on your Memorial Day menu.

Shirley –
My new thing this week is a “Darning Foot” for my sewing machine. It allows me to write and draw with my sewing machine. This is by far one of the coolest gadgets for us 1:00am craft club members.

Take it or Leave it? What goes in your Hospital Bag?

Getting ready for baby is an exciting time but guessing when that little bundle of joy will arrive can be tricky. It’s best to go ahead and get that bag packed ahead of time, but what do you really need? What can you skip? We talked to a few Moms and pulled from our personal experience and came up with this list!

1. Lip Balm. This is my number 1 go-to for pretty much anytime, but when it comes to laboring and a couple of days in the hospital, you’re going to need it.

2. Ipod/Some way to play music – There will be a lot of time to just “hang out.” A little background music might be nice, or pop in those ear buds and try to take your mind off the contractions.

3. Bathrobe, Flip Flops, Slippers or non skid socks – The bathrobe is great for keeping yourself covered when you have a bunch of unexpected visitors who may or may not knock.

4. Gum and Mints – You’ll be too tired/too sore to walk/too busy holding a precious baby to care whether or not you’ve brushed your teeth in 2 days. These will come in handy.

5. Toiletries – Tooth brush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair dyer and even your own shampoo and conditioner. While the hospital will provide some of those things, I always found it nice to have my own brand of these items.

6. Snacks – 2 words. Hospital. Food.

7. Laptop/Ipad/Kindle This is handy for reading, passing time or “Facebragging” new pictures of your adorable new bundle of joy. If you have younger children, this will give them something to do when they visit.

9. Gift for siblings from baby. We love the idea of the new baby gifting something to an older sibling, even if it’s just a little note from baby telling Big Brother or Sister how much they love them and look forward to having them as a sister or brother.

10. CarSeat – You’ll need to have this installed, prior to your hospital stay. You won’t get home without it.

11. Nursing supplies – Boppy/Nursing Pillow, Nursing Bra, and pads. You may think you won’t need them but if you plan to nurse or even try. Go ahead and toss them in.

12. Camera/Phone and Chargers – If you’re anything like me, your life is in your phone. I use it for everything from music to pictures to keeping track of my day.

What items would you add to this list? Are there any you would skip?

Frozen Fun Day – LJCC
Calling all Princess and Snowmen!

Drop off your kids, take the afternoon to yourself and come back to see your darlings dazzle you on our frozen set!

The kids will be split up into three groups:

  • Little ones: Ages 4-7 will be given a short script and can choose the song of their choice to sing on our frozen set!
  • Just for fun older kids: Ages 7 and up that just love the movie and want to try out acting and singing for the first time. They too will learn a short scene and can choose a song of their choice to perform on the set. As always at Acting Out Academy,  there is NEVER pressure to perform. Some kids just like to play games and be the audience and we respect that!
  • Experienced performers: (All Ages)These are kids that are no stranger to the stage and are ready to knock our socks off with their talent! They too will perform a longer scene and song of their choice!

*Note: Costumes are not required and we will have some frozen like costumes for kids to share, but if your child has one we encourage them to bring it! We also know someone who can make them for you!

52 New Things, 2014. Week 18

Dish tabs, fried green tomatoes and a glow in the dark dress. That’s what’s new with us this week. What did you try?

Angie –
I’m a huge fan of all things Target. (aren’t we all?) I love the Target brands of everything I’ve tried so far and decided to pick up their brand of dishtabs while I was in there last week. Not sure why I’ve never seen those before but they’re definitely worth the buy. They work just as well as the name brands I had been buying and saved me about a dollar on the pack. Win/Win!

Kristen-
My new thing is this dress I bought for my youngest – I found out from a friend it glows in the dark! That’s my favorite idea ever!

Shirley-
My new thing this week is going to Irondale Cafe and feasting on Fried Green Tomatoes! I’m actually a little embarrassed to admit that despite being born and raised in Birmingham, I had never been! Well, clearly I’ve wasted a good many year not patronizing that fine restaurant.. and enjoying/inhaling their signature dish.

I will now be making up for lost time!

Parenting with a PhD: Facebragging

By Kristen Berthiaume:

Dear Facebragger,
Your friends don’t like it when you do that.
Sincerely,
Common Sense

Ever wanted to message the above to someone? I feel like it regularly. Whether your parent friends are bragging on Facebook about all the amazing things their kids can do or your neighbors are going on (and on and on) about expensive purchases and fabulous vacations, the constant competition gets old. Things that people would never say in real life (because momma taught them not to brag) are plastered on social media for everyone, probably including a couple of people they’ve never actually spoken to in real life, to see. Why does this happen? There are a number of theories. For one thing, social media doesn’t require us to look another person in the face while we’re saying whatever we’re saying. It’s a lot easier to say (type) just about anything to your computer when there’s no human reaction to deal with. For another thing, there’s such a culture of this kind of “sharing,” it starts to feel perfectly acceptable. If everyone else is posting their kids’ ACT scores, why shouldn’t you? Finally, much of social media is inherently self-focused – it’s your FB page, your Twitter feed, your Instagram account, etc. No question that much of the content will end up being about you but logging on to FB doesn’t give us an excuse to log off of basic manners we were taught in childhood.

What’s the problem with bragging on social media, especially since everyone else seems to be doing it? First, when you use your FB page to promote your accomplishments, you force others to compare themselves to you and, if things are going pretty great for you and not so much for them, that comparison will feel bad. Your husband is “the best” and your kids are all getting straight As? That’s great! But, I guarantee you have at least one friend who’s contemplating divorce or whose child is in danger of failing 3rd grade. As much as your friends may love you and your perfect husband and brilliant children, it’s hard to be happy for someone when they’re constantly promoting their many successes and things seem to be going perfectly for them all of the time. It’s difficult to feel that a friend like that could understand or support you if your life is taking some scary detours. So, while you think you’re connecting with others by sharing about your life, you may actually be alienating yourself from friends and loved ones. This possibility becomes even more likely when you only post the great things that happen and none of the less-than-great (not that you should constantly complain on social media – people don’t really love that either). Another unintended side effect of bragging on social media is it may make others less likely to offer you social support when something tough is going on in your life.

So, what’s the difference between sharing and bragging? Sometimes it can be hard to determine when a post crosses the line between being informative and being competitive. Before posting, consider asking yourself some of these questions:

Why are you sharing? If it’s because the post will benefit others or update them about something they should know (e.g., you’re getting married, moving, got a new job, etc.), go for it. BUT, if it’s to make yourself feel better or look good in others’ eyes, the post might come across as bragging. Instead of captioning the pic of you lounging on the beach with a drink, “Hope you suckers are having fun at work!” consider focusing on the cool things you’re getting to see and do on vacation. That doesn’t mean people might not be jealous of what you’re getting to do but at least you’re not rubbing it in.

Is there is a specific audience for the post/picture (e.g., grandparents, best friends, etc.)?  I’m not sure that the guy you sat in front of in 8th grade science cares that your daughter had to choose among four potential prom dates. Consider sharing this kind of info. in a private message, text, or in person (are we even allowed to do that anymore?!) if the information isn’t really for public consumption.

Is there a way to word the post that provides information and shares ideas but doesn’t force a comparison between your life, kids, house, car, etc. and those of others? For example, rather than saying, “Andrew’s teacher said he’s the smartest in the class!” (Hello? You’re FB friends with some of the mothers of those other kids!), consider, “Andrew is really enjoying his first grade year and is really into reading!”

Beware the “humble brag.” “Having a humongous house is really more of a curse than a blessing! #alwayscleaning” is still bragging.

How would my child feel if she sees that I’ve shared this? If she’s too young to understand now, how would she feel in five years? Would she be embarrassed? Would this post encourage her to brag or compare herself favorably to others right in front of them? If it’s something you, as the wonderful momma you are, would teach your kids not to say out loud, it’s probably not something you should be posting.

So, next time you post on social media, stop to consider whether the information you’re sharing will draw your little community together or cause friends to roll their eyes. It may be fun to have people feel jealous of you but it’s a lot more fun to have friends (like, the real kind, not just the FB kind).
