Partners in Kids Health: The Benefits of Reading

Parents play a very important role in their child’s reading development. According to Dr. Amy McCollum, a pediatrician at Midtown Pediatrics at Children’s of Alabama, parents can start reading to their children at any age.

“All pediatricians encourage their families to start reading to their children at birth,” said McCollum. “Even if you think they have no idea what’s going on, they are very responsive to your voice, to the tight connection being held by you and just hearing what you have to say, looking at the bright colors and bright shapes, that’s wonderful even at birth.”

McCollum says that, regardless of a child’s age, the benefits of reading are numerous. She attributes reading to helping a child build his or her vocabulary from birth to age three. Reading can also help strengthen the bond between a parent and a child. It can also help with a child’s school readiness.

Summer Camp Spotlight: Thomas Andrew Summer Art Camp

It’s time to register for Summer Art Camps at Thomas Andrew Art! Thomas Andrew offers week long sessions and the week is all about art education, art creation and fun!

Your child will learn about the life and styles of artists such as Bob Ross, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Henry Matisse, and more. They will work on a different project each day, creating with paint on canvas, wood, fabric, as well as clay, wire, and cut paper.

At the end of the week there is gallery-style art, and parents are invited to see what their child has learned and created. Chocolate treats and juice are served to the campers during their art show.

Because Thomas Andrew is an actual professional artist, our program is a cut above the rest for creative minds. A teaching artist will lead the session along with an assistant. Our week-long sessions are limited to 8 kids only.

Times: There will be 2 sessions per day. Kids ages 8 – 11 years old will come in the mornings from 9 until 12 noon. Kids ages 12 – 15 will come in the afternoons from 1 until 4 pm.

Cost: $200 EARLY BIRD RATE, regularly $250 per week, which includes all art supplies, snacks, drinks, a camp T-shirt, splattered beanie, and portfolio bag to store their artwork.
