Back to School Bucket List for Moms

mommybucketlistYou made it! Summer 2017 is thisclose to being in the books and you’re still standing. The house, might be a different story, but now that their Summer Bucket List is complete, how about a list of things for you now that the little darlings are headed back to school.

  1. Brunch! Brunch with your best Mommy friend who somehow fell by the wayside during the summer. Catch up, have a mimosa and tend to only your plate, your food and enjoy not having ketchup smeared down your sleeve.
  2. Clean a room and soak in the glorious neatness that will actually last longer than 30 seconds.
  3. Nap
  4. Eat a candy bar standing out in the middle of the kitchen where anyone could see you, only they can’t because you have the house to yourself!
  5. Purge. All those things you threatened to get rid of over the summer but couldn’t because they were watching.. Now’s your chance!
  6. Make a business call without having to hide in the closet
  7. Check your watch obsessively waiting on the 3 o’clock school bell to ring so you can pick up the little rugrats you actually, kind of, sort of missed all day.

What’s on your Mommy Bucket List for the start of school?

The Beauty of Basic Invite

If there’s anything my wonderfully southern Grandmother, Mama Lil, taught me, it’s to send a card for every occasion. And if there’s anything any southern lady knows it’s that you’ve got to have the right colors. To quote Shelby in Steel Magnolias “my colors are blush and bashful”. The right shade is important.

That’s why, the next time you bring home a bundle of joy, your only stop for Cheap Birth Announcements should be Basic invite. Their options are anything but basic and their designs are beautiful, whether you’re looking for Boy Birth Announcements or Girl Birth Announcements you’re sure to find something you’ll love.

Basic Invite is a small and passionate team that has been creating the perfect card for every event since 2006. Through the development of unique technology, they’re able to provide you with limitless options that allow you to instantly create a card that is truly unique.

Once you choose your design, you can change the color of each element on the card to over 180 color choices. You’ll find just the right shade of blush and bashful to announce your little one’s arrival. And they have over 40 different envelope colors to choose from, so the arrival of your little darling will stand out.

Not only that, Basic Invite allows customers to order a printed sample. This allows you to see exactly how it will print and feel the paper quality before you place your order. And while you’re excited to send out the announcement of the arrival of your precious baby, life with a newborn can be overwhelming and hectic, but fear not! Basic Invite offers a free address collection service. In three easy steps, you share a link, collect addresses and get free envelope printing. Yes, Please!

By sending just the right birth announcement, my Mama Lil will know she taught me well.

5 Tips for viewing the Solar Eclipse with your Kids

As you may have heard, a total solar eclipse will hit the skies on August 21st, 2017. While Birmingham isn’t in the total phase of this solar eclipse, it can be observed here as a partial eclipse. Total solar eclipses occur when the New Moon comes between the Sun and Earth and casts the darkest part of its shadow, the umbra, on Earth. A full solar eclipse, known as totality, is almost as dark as night.

Tips on viewing the Solar Eclipse with your kids:

Protect Your Eyes

Never look directly at the Sun, eclipsed or otherwise, without proper protective eyewear. The Sun’s UV radiation can burn the retinas in your eyes, and cause permanent damage or even blindness.

To watch a solar eclipse safely, wear protective eclipse glasses (Click here for a list of libraries offering free glasses) or project an image of the eclipsed Sun using a pinhole projector.

If you’re planning to travel to a location of a full black out, when it becomes as dark as night, you can remove your glasses and look directly at the eclipse. The corona of the sun will have blossomed out from the black face of the moon. The sight is spectacular, but make sure to put the glasses back on when totality ends, after only a minute or two. And if you are only seeing a partial eclipse (like here in Birmingham,) you MUST keep the glasses on for the entire time.

Plan your location

If you are near the Path of Totality, be sure and figure out exactly where you plan to view the eclipse from. Chances are, the areas are going to be very crowded so arrive early to get your spot. Find a spot without trees or buildings so your view won’t be blocked. It’s possible you will be in your spot for a couple of hours, make sure to have chairs and some things to keep you busy while you wait.

Educate

Get your kids involved and excited ahead of time by doing some research online, look up pictures and check out books at the library. Make it something you can all learn about together as a family. While watching the eclipse it will be fun to know what’s happening and why.

Ditch your phone/electronics

It is highly unlikely that you are going to get good pictures, so sit back and take it all in with your own (protected) eyes and don’t be distracted with your screens.

Enjoy the moment

The eclipse doesn’t last long, make sure you kids know this is something that won’t happen again for a long time, and something they might not ever see again.

Do you have plans to watch the eclipse, what are you doing to prepare?

Random Rocks of Kindness

Have you noticed beautifully painted rocks in random places this summer? You’re not the only one! It is becoming a very popular hobby to paint rocks and even add encouraging sayings and hide them in parks, outside of stores, or restaurants in hopes of brightening the finder’s day. Once you find a rock, you can re-hide it to pass along the fun. There are several Facebook groups dedicated to showing off the rocks you have painted and the rocks you have found. There is Alabama Rocks, Happy Rocks Birmingham and several other groups for specific counties. It is a great craft to do with the kids. I know my kids were thrilled to think that someone would find the rock that they painted.

Here’s a guide to get you started:

1. Find rocks!

You can go with the rocks from your backyard. You can buy some at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or Walmart Craft stores have them. We found ours at Dollar Tree!

2. Wash the rocks.

A little warm water and a little dish soap will clean them right up and give you a clean canvas to paint on. Let your rocks dry. We set ours on a dish towel on the back patio. The Alabama summer sun dried them quickly!

3. Paint a primer coat on your rocks.

I’m going to say this is probably the most important step if you’re planning on really adding detail to your painting. You can use white acrylic paint for this. Especially if you have dark colored rocks like we did. But we did skip this step because my little artists just could NOT wait to paint!

4. Acrylic paint is best.

And very inexpensive! You can find it at Walmart and craft stores. Use different size brushes for variation. Sharpies tend to smear so paint pens work well to add words or small details. You can fix mistakes with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Let them dry completely before step five.

5. Use a brush or spray sealant.

It can be found at Walmart or craft stores. Once its dry you’re ready to hide it and brighten someone’s day with it.

Enjoy spreading random rocks of kindness! Use #BirminghamMommyRocks in your painted rock photos on Facebook or Instagram! We would love to see them and might even re-share on our social media!
