Fossil Hunt by Fresh Air Family

Saturday, April 14, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

World Class Fossil Hunt – Step Back 313 Million Years!

Sponsored by America’s First Federal Credit Union Kids 1st Club

Join Fresh Air Family at one of the world’s most important fossil sites, so important, it may rewrite history! This site is so rich in fossils that paleontologists can study the behavior and populations of ancient creatures who pre-date the dinosaurs. One of our Moms found a fossil of museum quality –otherwise, you can keep your treasured finds.

Last year a 9-year-old and a 12-year-old found museum-quality pieces!

This recently discovered site took an Act of Congress to preserve Union Chapel Mine’s hundreds of fossils. It has been visited by scientists from around the world ever since.

Sign up now, slots fill up fast! This hike is led by Carl Sloan, Fresh Air Family biologist and secretary of the Alabama Paleontological Society, which has been credited with many of the discoveries on this site. Meet: The WalMart Parking lot in Sumiton 690 West Highway 78, Sumiton, AL (We cannot give out the location of the fossil site.)  Registration required at events@freshairfamily.org or 205-540-6642 Wear long pants and good shoes as it is rough terrain. You will need a small hammer and a screwdriver to separate rocks. Bring a box with newspaper to take home your delicate finds! Sunscreen and water are essential in this full sun environment. Weather: Slippery conditions or rain will cancel this event.

Every Kids 1st Club account member can earn Honor Dollars! Bring your child’s most recent report card with all A’s and B’s to any America’s First branch and we will deposit $5.00 into their account!
