Spring Break is next week and you might be looking to keep the kids busy with a great family movie, might we suggest The Lorax?
We took the kids and nephew (ages 4, 4, and 6) this past weekend. It’s one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, so we were all excited to see it
In order to make it longer than the short story, the boy that talks to the Once-ler gets a lot of background and character development. Instead of just being the boy, he is Ted, a boy in love with a high school girl who dreams of trees in a time gone. His desire for her approval leads him outside of Thneedville to the Once-ler, where he learns the story of the truffula trees.
The movie had comic relief in the forms of the animals- the bears, fish, and birds were all cute and remained a fixation for the younger kids.
The humor in the movie was just right for my 6 year old. He laughed at parts that the younger kids missed.
The movie stayed as close to the book as possible, but the Seuss-style language was lacking. I missed hearing the fun made up words.
All in all, we all enjoyed it. The middle had a slightly dark part where the 4 year olds tensed up but weren’t scared. The ending was so happy and sweet, the middle was quickly forgotten.
The kids gave it a 9 out of 10. And don’t be afraid of the PG rating, we’re still scratching our heads on that one. The only thing we could think of was the use of the phrase “What the…?” and even then, we weren’t sure that would do it.
Are you serious? I’m sorry to be so blunt, but a child that age does not need that much over-stimulation. Did you catch the foul language? The little acts of rudeness and deception? The typical Corporate minded “bad guy”? I’m sorry, but this is proof that anybody with a website who wants to write something is not an expert, and may very well be just another parent blinded by “the next big short-lived buzz for huge profit garbage” that seems to rule our “anti-reality”. Think about it out loud to make yourself feel better, then think about it in private. Does the Disney Channel and Nick do your babysitting? If so, you are breeding the problem!
Hi Rob! Thank you for taking the time to read BirminghamMommy.com. We do approve posts that don’t agree with us, but we do have filters in place to keep out spammers, especially on posts as old as this one.
As you can guess from our site, we are Moms and we stay quite busy. Since we prefer to parent rather than use the television to babysit our kids, it does take us a little time to respond to and publish our comments.
We appreciate you weighing in and while we seem to disagree with you on the subject of The Lorax, we appreciate your thoughts nonetheless.
I apologize for my bluntness, and by no means was I implying that ya’ll are poor parents. Again, i am sorry. Thanks for agreeing to disagree! I ran across your review because I was researching this movie after finding out it was played at my 6 year old boy’s 1st grade class. I have a huge problem with that and am disappointed in an otherwise extraordinary school. Again Thanks, this is in reply to you. You don’t have to post it.
No worries! We welcome and encourage people to disagree with us… It’s how we learn! Our views on movies and music tends to be more lenient than some. With that said, I did draw the line at Wreck It Ralph and ParaNorman and my kids are 5 and 7… So if that ever comes up, keep that in mind.
Best to you!
