SUMMARY:Special Saturdays at the Birmingham Zoo
DESCRIPTION:As part of our ongoing efforts to provide inclusive opportunities to all members of the community\, the Education Department at the Birmingham Zoo and KultureCity are excited to announce our new Special Saturdays program. Special Saturdays is a series of zoo-based learning experiences for children and adolescents with cognitive or physical disabilities whose opportunities for engagement in community programs might otherwise be limited. Caregivers must attend all classes with participants to provide behavioral support and meet child-specific needs. This program is designed with the unique learning needs of this population in mind. Using evidence-based teaching and sensory strategies\, we hope to provide a fun and engaging educational experience that will benefit all participants. \nClasses are held the second Saturday of each month from 10am-11am for ages 8 and up. \nThere is no charge for the Special Saturdays program. Space is limited to 10 students per class. DESCRIPTION:Join AshaKiran\, the University of Alabama in Huntsville Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and Office of Womens & Gender Studies\, Alabama Dept. of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) and the Alabama Institute for Deaf & Blind (AIDB) for the annual AshaKiran Cultural Competency Conference 2018 with this years’ focus on Improving Outcomes for Individuals with Disabilities Experiencing Domestic Violence\, Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking. \nThis workshop is intended to increase participants’ awareness of the cultural barriers for individuals with disabilities that impact recovery\, accessing mainstream victims’ services\, law enforcement and other systems. The goal will be to develop more effective tools aimed at serving and supporting individuals with disabilities who have suffered from domestic violence and/or sexual assault. 1Touch™ Project will also provide an opportunity for interactive self-defense techniques & strategies specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. \nGeneral admission for this conference is $20 which includes lunch and materials. UAH Students can attend for free with registration. Continuing education credits available for nurses\, social workers\, counselors and certified rehabilitation counselors.
